The 32-bit vs 64-bit VST/DLL Music DAW Problem, Random Stuff, and More

If you've been exposed to the electronic music industry then you'll know about this issue. It feels like they're stuck in a time warp because in spite of the switch to 64-bit Operating Systems and for DAWs, VSTs haven't really caught up (these notes are from a long while back/maybe even years? so if they're not entirely up to date please excuse me)(sorry, if these notes seem a little bit difficult to read. They're mostly for my own reference):
- there are currently an amazingly small number of options out there to attack this problem? It feels pretty obvious how some of it works. Basically, create a small host within a host (your DAW) that is both 32-bit and 64-bit compatible? From this wrapper/host launch the actual 32-bit or 64-bit VST which gives the underlying DAW compatibility with both executable formats
64-bit to 32-bit vst bridge
- another method is to create wrapper code by scanning existing VSTs and then using this to create a bridging element. Effectively, converts VST's from 64 to 32 bit
64 to 32 bit vst converter
- I've obviously looked into Open Source versions that I could hack/mangle into something workeable (mainly for personal interest). We're basically looking for mini DAWs. Not much out there?
64-bit to 32-bit vst bridge open source
64-bit vst skeleton code
32-bit to 64-bit compatibilty source code dll
python vst audio
VST with scripts?
what's the real issue in using 32 bit vst on a 64 bit daw?
setting up juce
open source vst host
smallest vst daw host
Lightweight DAW as VST host
smallest daw vst capable
- there aren't that many options out there with regards to 32-bit to 64-bit bridges (more going the other way around)?
jbridge alternatives
- given the difficulties of programming VSTs it makes sense that people would resort to GUI based programming mechanisms. If you don't already know they're not too disimilar to programming via Visual Basic or Delphi. If you use Open Source VSTs these obviously make recompilation/conversion a lot easier
max4live plugin to vst
- I've look at hacks. One technique I've looked at is injecting code into an existing DLL/VST that is itself a VST host wrapper. It's a technique that is sometimes used in offensive computer security. You may need to brush up on your assembly code technique/programming?
compile exe as dll
compile as dll rather then exe mingw
g++ -c -DBUILDING_EXAMPLE_DLL example_dll.cpp
g++ -shared -o example_dll.dll example_dll.o -Wl,--out-implib,libexample_dll.a
most basic vst source code
open source codes for EQ, Synth, Compressor plugins?
smallest daw that can be used as a vst
Lightweight DAW as VST host
vst au host
savihost sourcecode
for i in `lynx -dump "http://www.hermannseib.com/programs/old/" | awk '/http/{print $2}'`; do wget -c "$i"; done
get function names from windows exe
get function names from windows exe
insert code into windows executable
windows assembly open excutable
gcc -c -S filename.c
load windows dll source code
extract function names from dll
developing windows applications on linux
- another alternative is to just make your own VST's yourself. If you dabble in IT and music this makes especially if you use Open Source VSTs. Just re-compile the VST in question. Obviously, not so easy if sometimes if you don't have compatible frameworks. Not easy if you're dealing with proprietary stuff as well
vst examples
alternative sonicbirth
sonicbirth source code
Sonic birth registration
plugin developer kit?
most basic vst source code possible
VST Plug-in Tutorials / Source Code for Equalisation
vst source code example
compile vst under linux for windows
- I've obviously looked at re-routing sound as well. In theory it works but there can be severe latency issues depending on the setup in question
re-wire
audio re-route
vmware re-route
- using Rewire is a slow alternative. You may need to bounce down sounds to get things to sync up properly?
free rewire daw
open source jbridge
vsthost with rewire support
- using alternative DAWs running semi-simultaneously is another choice. A lot of modern DAWs allow for automatic sound warping (namely, they can synchronise things with existing sounds according to their current time and rhythm)
- if you're like me you prefer lightweight development environments because they're easier to maintain and upgrade/update. Obviously, that's easier said then done given modern life and it's the same with VST development as well

Random Quotes:
- THERE’S a prominent idea in political science known as the resource curse.

It refers to the paradox — seen time and time again throughout history — that a country with an abundance of a highly valuable natural resources experience higher rates of corruption, more conflict, and have less democratic governments.

Important resources like minerals, oil and diamonds often go hand-in-hand with conflict and poor governance.

But when it comes to one particular resource — the most important resource of all — many think a different theory will hold true.

Often referred to as the water wars thesis, it suggests that growing water scarcity will drive violent conflict as access to water dries up for certain communities. Analysts worry that people, opportunistic politicians and powerful corporations will battle for dwindling water supply, inflaming tensions.
- This was the opposite of the music industry, where almost every music label is represented on a single music streaming platform. Instead, certain shows or movies can only be found on specific platforms.

As a result, consumers need to subscribe to several platforms, or else simply can't access the content as it hasn't been released in their country.

"They're moving towards more exclusive releases meaning consumers will have to pay much more to get access to services."

"There is still a lot of content that isn't available through streaming.

"The root causes of piracy in Australia is often a lack of cheap and effective easily accessible legal options.

"Whenever we talk to consumers that's the big concern. Many people want to pay but too often can't get access to content they want at price they can afford."
- This anecdote is emblematic of Musk's management style, Tesla insiders told CNBC. Interviews with 35 current and former employees depict an ambitious CEO whose drive to make everything from scratch sometimes impaired his decision-making, leading him to approve expensive projects that failed and delayed production. They also described occasions where Musk refused to consider methods pioneered by other automakers and ignored advice from industry veterans within Tesla's ranks.

Tesla's future as a mass-market car company hinges on efficient, automated production of the Model 3. Tesla will lose $6,000 for every $35,000 Model 3 it sells, says UBS analyst Colin Langan. It only breaks even if the car sells for over $41,000. Tesla has yet to produce the $35,000 base model of the Model 3.

Tesla did meet the goal of producing more than 5,000 Model 3 vehicles in a week during the third quarter. It made 80,142 vehicles (including 53,239 Model 3's), beating Wall Street analysts' expectations. But the company is nowhere near the 500,000 mark Musk promised in 2016. As of the end of Q3, Tesla has produced 167,975 cars this year. To put that in context, Ford makes that many cars approximately every 10 days.
- Linus Torvalds, Linux's "benevolent dictator for life," returned to oversee the open source project on Monday following a self-imposed break last month to "get some assistance on how to understand people's emotions and respond appropriately." Torvalds, who has a reputation for being rude to other members of the community, said at the time he wanted to address his "flippant" actions and proclivity for personal attacks.

His story is one that most boardrooms in the US will have seen at some point in time. Enron, BP, Goldman Sachs, Philip Morris. Fraud, tax evasion, toxic dumping, safety violations, bid rigging and overbilling.

About 3 percent of CEOs assessed in a management study scored in the psychopath range. In the general population its just above 1 percent. These are not primary psychopaths like Jeffrey Daumer, but powerful people who've allowed their biologically inherited empathy traits to dry up.
- The last time a US astronaut walked on the moon was in 1972. NASA's new lunar mission could land another astronaut on there in 2026, four years before China intends to do the same. This would be a triumph that Trump could enjoy in office down the road, assuming he is re-elected president and that he doesn't flip-flop on the project out of fear its price tag will scare off his voters. However, US voters are no longer particularly receptive to the argument that progress in space travel is not only good for the military but also for civilian industries (telecommunications or environmental protection, for example).

This is why it makes sense to work on an international basis with projects such as moon stations or manned missions to Mars. The Europeans, Russians and Chinese are open to this, but Washington is reluctant to work with Beijing. China was not allowed to participate in the ISS, in which over 100 countries are involved. The US sees each Chinese rockets as a potential weapon and each satellite as a tool for spying.

Washington wants to develop its Space Force to protect navigation and communication satellites from attacks by Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, as US Vice President Mike Pence put it. For his part, the administrator of the China National Space Administration, Zhang Kejian, has insisted that China is looking forward to cooperating: "To the extent that agencies and countries from around the world can cooperate on space, it is absolutely in our interest to do so," he said. "I look forward to exploring more opportunities to do that."

Finding Funding/Investment, Making Money Online, and More

Finding Funding/Investment:
- I've been helping some people find funding recently. Below are some of the options that I found during my research:
- crowdfunding. Sometimes, you'll need to market yourself before you can gain any traction
crowdfund
- government grants. A lot of the time these are for projects that are of community benefit. Note, that grants run across the board. Government projects, public benefit projects, etc... Also, sometimes it's easier to go through an intermediary

- donations. If your project is for a good cause then sometimes you can setup a not for profit or else ask for donations
not for profit setup
Starting an NFP
- friends/family. Easy option if your friends/family have spare cash, not so easy if they don't
- investment pools. This means pitching your idea to people who pool money for investment. This can mean big hedge funds, private investors, or firms which specialise in microinvestment
microinvestment
- savings. Useful only for those have have built up enough though. We'll explore options for making money further below
- angel investors. This includes entrepreneurs, high net worth individuals, random individuals, etc... There are sometimes listings of such people online as they're looking for for ways to invest. They can often be accessed via newsletters as well
angel investors
- equity crowdfunding
- a lot of educational institutions now have startup incubators which provide seed funding as well

- job boards often have a lot of pure online work options available. Like normal jobs these can vary drastically. They can pay well or not and the work difficulty varies drastically as well (Digital marketing and cryptocurrencies/blockchain seem to be big areas at the moment. It makes sense given some people just don't care or want to get involved with the digital side of things in their business). Some jobs can be outright bizarre of have you attempting to compete on wages against someone in a third world country. It's better that you aim for the high side if you want to make money online

Random Quotes:
- The F-35 programme is known as America's most expensive weapons system but it's been plagued by reliability issues and criticised by Trump ever since he was elected president and promised to save billions of dollars on military purchases.

However, Dave Lindorff believes that while the country’s top defence contractors battle it out for lucrative deals, the real losers are American citizens.

“The US taxpayer, as always, is being taken for a ride by the US arms industry, and for a weapon that really has no need at all, except for purposes of nuclear blackmail. The irony is that the cost of such a plan, close to $1.5 trillion over the life of the F-35, is actually a threat to the US economy, because of its enormous burden on the taxpaying public”. the expert concluded.
- Chinese police have seized more than 210,000 hard drives produced by a counterfeit ring that sold them as brand-name items from the likes of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and IBM, the Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

China has vowed to get tough on counterfeiting and intellectual property theft but many brands still face the problem with a broad range of items from cosmetics to vehicles being copied.

The theft of intellectual property is a major source of friction in a trade dispute with the United States.

Police arrested 56 suspects at two factories and four offices in the cities of Nanjing, Beijing, Chongqing and Guangzhou, where the hard drives were made and sold, Xinhua said.

Xinhua said the action against the counterfeiters was carried out late last year. It did not say why the news was only announced on Saturday but it came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered his trade chief to begin the process of imposing tariffs on all imports from China.

The investigation into the fake hard drives began after Hewlett Packard filed a complaint, Nanjing police were reported as saying. Hewlett Packard did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours.

The suspects would buy cheap, old and discarded hard drives abroad, modify the data on them, repackage them and sell them at a 60% profit, the police said.

Police had been shocked at the scale of the operation, in which hundreds of people were employed.
- [Many are thinking] that Mr. Trump is surrounded by lunatics. But I think that another mistake, a miscalculation of the liberals in Iran is thinking they can drive a wedge between Mr. Trump and his closest advisors around him. This is another miscalculation that the liberals in Iran are making. Mr Trump cannot do anything right now. It is my personal belief that the neocon (associates) of Mr. Trump are blackmailing him in every which way. If he doesn’t go with war-expanding policies around the world, they are going to reveal even more information about him. And we all know Mr. Trump has quite a lot of skeletons in his closet, many of them of his own making. So he is stuck in this position.

I don’t think he can act independently in this situation. Well, I think the Iranian liberals that are still in power for the next two years I think are miscalculating once again, thinking they can separate Mr. Trump and they can influence the US to restart a negotiation. I don’t think that’s a possibility, I think it's wishful thinking. And in international relations, there is no room for wishful thinking.
- A couple of thoughts.. 1.) It's always better cheaper to be pro-active, not reactive - especially when you already have the lead. If we "wait to see" what Russian/Chinese 6th gens look like then by the time we design, test and build our own we'll be behind the curve. We also build a degree of over-match into our airframes, as the success of the F-14, 15 and 16 have displayed. Each of those handily dispatched not just of aircraft like the Mig-21, 23 and 25, but also aircraft designed to counter them - i.e. the Mig-29. They've all fallen to our 4th gen teen series.

I'm confused as to how you (or anyone?) can say PCA look like F-111 V.2, when nobody here knows what PCA is going to look like? There are artist conceptions, but even at this point I doubt USAF knows. I would bet they're narrowing designs now, but first flight of anything is a good ways off still. Also, PCA isn't being pitched as a be all, do all multirole airframe like the F-35. It's primary mission will be air superiority over GREAT ranges, with perhaps a secondary SEAD mission.

In any case, I think we're in better and better shape the more F-35's roll off the production line. Although it doesn't have the overwhelming advantage in every area the F-22 does, it restores a margin of superiority we've been accustomed to. In fact, it's considerably greater than that IMO. In prior red flags, it was explained the best blue air could do was have a 3:1 advantage over red air. With the F-35, we're seeing 15:1, 20:1 etc. That's incredible, and an amazing accomplishment IMO. It will only get better with better engines, sensors and weapons.

Russia is developing the Hunter UCAV, and plans to operate it in conjunction with the SU-57. China is undoubtedly not far behind, and may well obtain SU-57's of her own. Either one of them makes a breakthrough and the F-35 could lose its edge, which is why funding/building PCA is so important. It will not be the next F-111, far from it. I expect it to be as dominant as the F-22/35 are today, perhaps even moreso...
- In the latter, if I read it correctly, the various designs are stable. And the results with canards are already pretty bad, as the standard delta with LEX is the best among the configurations tested, at least 10dB better across all angles (fig. 11). Now imagine what happens with an unstable canard design, say the Gripen. The aerodynamic center of the wings is in front of the center of gravity, and the canards' aerodynamic center is in front of both. As a plane spends most of its time in cruise settings, the canards must therefore create a pitch down moment to counter the wings' lift, which would mean it either has a profile different from the wing, either it's tilted to deflect the air flow up. In both cases, planform alignment goes out the window, and the RCS will surely go up.
- Developed in collaboration with researchers from The University of Manchester, the MAGMA craft actually demonstrates two different approaches to using moving air to steer a plane. The first, Wing Circulation Control, directs some of the air generated by the plane’s powerful jet engine through thin vents located on the trailing edge of the wings, where you’d normally find the ailerons that can raise and lower.

When the vents are open, the blasts of air, moving at supersonic speeds, change the direction of air moving over the aircraft’s wings during flight, which causes the plane to nose up, or roll, depending on how many of the vents are active.

The other approach successfully tested on the MAGMA aircraft is called Fluidic Thrust Vectoring which instead uses a series of vents inside the jet engine’s rear nozzle to control the angle of thrust as it exits the craft, which in turn allows the plane to manoeuvre. It’s similar to how the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor can change the direction of its thrust for added manoeuvrability using a series of movable flaps, but this approach reduces the number of mechanical components and moving pieces to accomplish the same thing.

In addition to simplifying the design of at least part of an aircraft, which can make them cheaper to maintain and more reliable in the long run, this approach can also help reduce a plane’s radar signature. Fewer moving parts means less open seams on the body of the aircraft, which helps to increase its stealthiness. As a result, the military will undoubtedly be the first to adopt technology like this, but that will help hasten the research and development so that it will hopefully start showing up on commercial aircraft and making air travel just a little safer.
- But at the heart of connection between bad boy folk hero Trump and his adulating base is a fundamental misunderstanding. Trump is not fighting the establishment. Trump is not using his powers to help his angry supporters. Trump is screwing them.

He attacks their health by eliminating rules which reduce corporate air and water pollution. He hasn’t stopped his repeated attempts to cut their health insurance by Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare. He is dismantling the bank and lending regulations overseen by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Nothing good will come to average Americans from the foreign members of Trump’s club. These are all assaults on the standard of living, present and future, of non-elite America.

The 2017 tax cuts are the best example of how Trump betrays his base. Poor and middle-income Americans got small tax cuts, but also inherit gigantic future deficits to pay for the enormous cuts in corporate and income taxes for the very wealthy.

Trump is good at what he does, but that is bad for everybody else, especially for those who cheer him on.
- Like his father and grandfather before him, Rockefeller had learned to use philanthropy and largesse as a mask for his true intention: control. But that mask slipped when he penned a draft of the Council’s charter revealing the organization’s true purpose. The Council, according to JDR3, would “promote research and apply existing knowledge to help develop such changes in the attitudes, habits and environmental pressures affecting the life of human beings so that within every social and economic grouping parents who are above the average in intelligence, quality of personality and affection will tend to have larger than average families.”
- YouTube's free music streaming service is still very popular among users. "According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), YouTube's free-of-charge offer has played no small role for a third of those polled not to sign any subscription-based contracts," says Drücke. YouTube itself can't complain about ad-related income and is believed to pay less to artists than other streaming services.

And then there's what people have come to call streamripping. Some 38% of listeners are engaged in illegal music downloads, which of course is a tragedy for legal streaming services and artists not getting any royalties.

When given as an intramuscular injection, the therapy was as effective as pills and persisted in the body for at least a month. In addition, more than 97% of study participants said in a survey that they preferred the long-acting injectable to daily pills. Other researchers are looking beyond treatment to a possible cure for HIV, developing therapies, such as broadly neutralizing antibodies, that could "wake up" and then kill dormant viruses. Although injectable HIV drugs could be a welcome convenience for many, some experts are skeptical that they would actually improve treatment compliance, especially among people who are homeless or lack stable insurance coverage.
- The Commission said traders exchanged sensitive information and coordinated their activities in chatrooms on Bloomberg terminals. That gave the traders access to privileged information that helped them decide what currencies to buy and sell, and when.
- The world’s first all-electric vertical takeoff and landing passenger jet has been unveiled after completing its first flight.

German startup Lilium aims to have a fleet of the five-seat aircraft — which can operate with a pilot or in drone mode — flying in cities worldwide by 2025, providing a pay-per-ride service that will be emission-free, five times faster than a car, and produce less noise than a motorbike.

Lilium has $100 million in funds and must raise at least the same amount again to bring the model to market, while adding hundreds more jobs to its payroll of 300 people, Chief Executive Officer Daniel Wiegand told Bloomberg TV.

The plane will have a 300-kilometer range, allowing it to link New York and Boston. A short hop between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Manhattan will cost about $70 per passenger, making it cheaper than a helicopter and competitive with top-end limousine services, Chief Commercial Officer Remo Gerber said in an interview.

A full-scale, full-weight prototype made its debut flight from Lilium’s base near Munich on May 4 and has commenced flight tests, the company said Thursday. The craft is powered by 36 jet engines that swivel after takeoff to provide forward flight in the manner of a standard plane, using 10% of the energy of multi-rotor drones based on helicopter technology. That saving in turn allows it to fly for 10 times the distance, overcoming the range issues regarded as a major obstacle to electric-powered planes.

As well as having jets instead of propellers, the model has no tail, no rudder, no gearbox, and only one moving part in the engine. That makes the design safer, the company said.

Airbus, Uber

Wiegand said he’s had interest from cities worldwide, and would initially like to deploy the Lilium in two or three locations each with about 20 planes — enough to make the individual operations profitable. The plan is to remain independent rather than seek a buyer, he said, with the company making its own engines, batteries, and composite structures.

The Lilium has begun seeking approval from European and US regulators, making the model the first electric jet in history to enter certification.

There are more than 100 different electric-aircraft programs in development worldwide, according to Roland Berger, with Lilium’s biggest competitors including Joby Aviation and Kitty Hawk, whose models are electric rotor rather than jet powered, as well as planned offerings from Airbus SE, Boeing CO, and Bell Helicopter, partnered with Uber Technologies Inc.
