Winter Jacket Purchase/Repair/Design, Random Stuff, and More

- of late, things have become really cold in my part of the world. My existing jackets were old, damaged, and needed replacements as well so this is a post regarding some results of my personal investigation and research into this area:
- generalist stores often have best value but of poor to middling quality

- battery powered heated jackets are a relatively new idea and I've never tried them but they are intersting. Non-heated jackets can be retrofitted via battery powered thermal pads. Heated jackets seem like a good idea but if you look at reviews sound cumbersome. 7.4V, 5V, 12V, 18V variants which means depending on the version you're dealing with you may require special batteries/powerbanks or you may be able to rely on something you purchase from your local electronics store

- I didn't think about it but clothes seem "really fragile now". I bought a jacket from a a few years ago that has three tears in it that I've had to sew or glue back together. Materials are poor in many jackets. Goretex is generally more durable but expensive and becoming out of fashion due to environmental concerns. Most jackets are made of polyester now. Many jackets are clearly designed to have a planned obsolescence nowadays and don't have repairability in mind

are snow jackets durable
Are ski jackets durable?
Typically made from durable materials like Gore-Tex or eVent, these jackets offer high levels of waterproofness and breathability. This ensures that users remain dry and comfortable during their skiing sessions.

How long will a ski jacket last?
From that first day in a new ski jacket, when water beads up and runs off like you're wrapped in an impenetrable force field, the process of degradation has already begun. And whether it takes 10 years or one season, your jacket is destined to one day complete its transformation into a waterlogged sponge.

how many people throw away clothes because they have holes in them
why do people throw away clothes
Brits reveal why they throw away clothes they don't need to
One of the top reasons Brits throw clothes away is indeed because of a stain – over a quarter (29%) of people confess to having thrown out wardrobe items simply because of a stain. And for some Brits, it's easier to throw away their stained items than to treat them. Of those that have thrown away clothing due to a stain:
Almost a third (32%) admitted to only putting the item in the washing machine as usual, without any special treatment. When the stain didn't come out immediately, they threw it away.
A quarter (23%) never even attempted to remove the stain because the item of clothing was cheap.
One in five simply threw the item away as they thought the stain was 'tricky'.
But, it's not just stained clothes that are being thrown away – 27% admitted to throwing away clothing because of a hole that could have been easily sewn up.
Other reasons Brits throw away wearable clothes include needing more space in their wardrobe (18%), getting rid of clothes that belonged to an ex (10%), and clothes feeling 'old' after they had worn them a handful of times (12%).
10% threw away clothes after a few wears as they were cheap to buy, whilst one in twenty threw away an item that they couldn't be bothered to return to the retailer.
45% of Brits had the best of intentions, bagging up clothes to take to the charity shop, only to throw them away in the end. 59% of which, admitted that they ultimately threw them away to save on the hassle.

BREATHABILITY RATINGS
Waterproof clothing can often feel clammy and sweat-inducing, so breathable fabrics are designed to keep rain out but simultaneously allow sweat to escape. Breathability is commonly measured in two ways:
An MVTR (moisture vapour transmission rate) is measured in g/m²/24hr, with a higher figure indicating better breathability (20,000g/m²/24hr is considered a premium score).
A RET (resistance to evaporative heat transfer) score is measured from 0-20+, with (confusingly) a lower figure indicating better breathability (a RET value of 0-6 is considered excellent, 7-13 is good, 14-20 is ok, and 20+ is poor).

- given the lack of warmth in many jackets out there it's easy to question whether people care more about function or fashion nowadays. Layering is a concept that involves layering various items of clothing to act as multiple layers of insulation to maximise warmth

what is the best clothes for layering cold climates
The Science Behind Layering
To understand the science behind layering, we need to familiarize ourselves with a basic heat transfer principle: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction refers to the transfer of heat through direct contact. Convection is the transfer of heat through the movement of air or water molecules. Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves.
By layering garments made of different materials, we create air pockets that trap heat, slowing the transfer of heat from our bodies to the cold environment. Each layer plays a role in this process. The base layer, which is in direct contact with your skin, wicks away moisture and keeps you dry. The midlayer provides insulation and retains heat. The outer layer acts as a shield, protecting you from wind, rain, and snow.
It's important to choose the right materials for each layer. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are excellent for wicking away moisture, while natural fibers like merino wool provide excellent insulation. By combining these materials, you can create an effective layering system that keeps you comfortable in various weather conditions.

- most jackets are made of plastic/polyester nowadays. If they break you're best option is to get them sewn back professionally back together. If you're unable/unwilling to do that I found out that the next best thing is a Chloropene based glue (I came to this conclusion through luck, trial and error). The only problem is that the glue I've been using doesn't dry clear so you have to be careful about where you put it. Cleanup involves an alchohol based liquid such as turpentine or methylated spirits

Are there different types of seam sealing tape?
Yes, there are several types of seam sealing tapes, each tailored to specific applications and garment requirements:
Single-Layer Seam Sealing Tape: Lightweight and flexible, this tape is perfect for packable jackets designed for light outdoor activities.
Double-Layer Seam Sealing Tape: Stronger and more durable, it suits garments used in moderate to harsh environments, such as hiking or skiing jackets.
Triple-Layer Seam Sealing Tape: Built for heavy-duty use, this tape is ideal for extreme weather gear, offering maximum waterproofing and strength.
Additionally, seam-sealing tapes are available in fabric-backed versions. These are particularly useful for softshell jackets, where they enhance comfort and reduce chafing while maintaining waterproof protection.

- synthetic fibres are generally more durable but less breathable although this is becoming much better as advancments in materials engineering occurs. That's why there is a breathability and porosity numbers on higher end snow jackets now. When your life literally depends on things you can depend on this as a correction factor to determine value for money. A good example is military equipment and clothing and workwear where durability is often critical
Polar fleece is a soft fabric made from polyester that is napped and insulating.
PolarFleece is a trademark registered by Malden Mills (now Polartec, LLC) with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on October 6, 1981.[1] Malden Mills developed polar fleece in 1979.
Uses
Polar fleece is used in jackets, hats, sweaters, sweatpants, cloth diapers (nappies), gym clothes, hoodies, pajamas, blankets, and high-performance outdoor clothing. The produced fleece can be used to create clothes that are very light, soft, and easy to wash. Polar fleece can stretch more easily in one direction than in others.[2]
History
Polar fleece originated in Massachusetts in 1979 when Malden Mills and Patagonia developed Synchilla (synthetic chinchilla).[3] It was a new, light, strong pile fabric meant to mimic, and in some ways surpass, wool. Malden Mills CEO Aaron Feuerstein intentionally declined to patent polar fleece, allowing the material to be produced cheaply and widely by many vendors, leading to the material's quick and wide acceptance.[4][5][6] Malden Mills registered PolarFleece as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on October 6, 1981.[7]

High-Quality Wool for Maximum Durability
One of the primary reasons a military wool sweater lasts so long is the high-quality wool used in its construction. Unlike cheap synthetic blends, military-grade wool provides:
Superior Strength – Wool fibers have natural elasticity, allowing flexibility without breaking.
Resistance to Wear & Tear – A commando sweater made of high-grade wool is resistant to pilling and fraying over time.
Self-Cleaning Properties – Wool contains natural lanolin, which repels dirt and odors, reducing the need for frequent washing.
A great example of this is the Genuine German Army Commando Sweater. Made from a thick wool blend, this military sweater provides excellent insulation while withstanding extreme outdoor conditions.
Reinforced Construction for Longevity
Unlike regular sweaters, a commando sweater is designed for rugged environments. Soldiers wear them during intense operations, requiring extra reinforcement in key areas:
Shoulder & Elbow Patches – Many military wool sweaters include reinforced panels to prevent fabric wear in high-friction zones.
Heavy-Duty Stitching – Double or triple-stitched seams enhance durability and prevent unraveling.
Ribbed Knit Design – This flexible construction ensures a snug fit while maintaining shape over time. The Austrian Army Wool Commando Sweater exemplifies military-grade durability. Featuring reinforced elbow patches and a high collar, this military wool sweater is built for long-term outdoor wear, whether for tactical operations or everyday use.
Natural Insulation & Weather Resistance
A military sweater needs to be more than just durable—it also has to provide excellent protection against the elements. Wool's natural insulating properties make it an ideal choice for soldiers exposed to unpredictable weather:
Exceptional Heat Retention – Wool traps body heat, keeping you warm in cold weather conditions.
Water Resistance – Unlike cotton, wool can absorb moisture (such as sweat or rain) while still keeping the wearer dry.
Windproofing – A tightly woven commando sweater provides superior wind resistance compared to synthetic alternatives.
For complete cold-weather preparedness, pair your military wool sweater with a reliable mess kit. The Austrian Military Mess Kit is perfect for heating up food or drinks when temperatures drop. This combination ensures both warmth and sustenance in the harshest conditions.
Designed for Versatility & Multi-Purpose Use
The commando sweater isn't just for soldiers—it has become a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts, survivalists, and even casual wear. Compared to bulky jackets, these sweaters offer:
Layering Flexibility – Wear it alone or as an insulating layer under a coat.
Multi-Use Functionality – Suitable for military personnel, campers, hikers, and everyday wear.
Timeless Military Aesthetic – The classic military wool sweater design pairs well with both outdoor gear and urban fashion.

- basically, I want a jacket that will last beyond a few months and half a dozen wash cycle but most places in retail outlets are basically selling the same thing and switching labels so it's genuinely hard to find something good quality (even at boutique stores that I wouldn't normally consider going into). I thought I was losing my mind or wasn't actually looking after my clothes properly but many items of clothing seem to be designed to be disposable after around half a dozen wash cycles now?

what is a ykk zipper
Why is YKK the best?
YKK is the abbreviation of Yoshida Kogyo Kabushibibaisha, a Japanese company that has been leading the zipper industry and represents the industry standard for more than 80 years. With its advanced technology, stable raw materials, and standardized management, YKK still enjoys the global reputation for its irreplaceable quality.

Zippers
Zippers
YKK manufactures and markets a wide range of zippers, with a primary focus on three types: metal, coil, and VISLON®. The metal zipper has the longest history and is suited for various applications such as jackets, luggage, jeans and others. A coil zipper is made of spiral plastic elements, including polyester and nylon. This is the softest zipper among the three types of zippers. The VISLON® zipper is made of injection molded plastic elements. Rich element color variations are created by formulating the color pigment during the injection process.

- the zipper box retainer on one of my jackets actually broke off. I searched for where to find a replacement kit but just couldn't find one. It seems as though a lot of jackets have custom zippers which means you can't get an exact replacement/match a lot of the time. I tried printing out a replacement via 3D printing but it was too fragile. I don't seem to have a choice except to replace the entire zipper unfortunately?

Weaving is a method of textile production [a] in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. The longitudinal threads are called the warp and the lateral threads are the weft, woof, or filling. The method in which these threads are interwoven affects the characteristics of the cloth.[1] Cloth is usually woven on a loom, a device that holds warp threads in place while filling threads are woven through them. A fabric band that meets this definition of cloth (warp threads with a weft thread winding between) can also be made using other methods, including tablet weaving, back strap loom, or other techniques that can be done without looms.[2]
The way the warp and filling threads interlace with each other is called the weave. The majority of woven products are created with one of three basic weaves: plain weave, satin weave, or twill weave. Woven cloth can be plain or classic (in one colour or a simple pattern), or can be woven in decorative or artistic design.

Some kind of calendared nylon. I doubt it's silnylon (silicone coated) as that would be awful for a jacket, like wearing a trash can bag as it doesn't breath at all.

- incredibly large and deep supply chain in the clothing and fashion industry? Heaps of people involved. Samples, MOQ=Minimal Order Quantity are used to test factories. MOQ average is ~500-1000? Very thin margins for a lot of the people who work in these fashion supply chains when you do the numbers. I wonder whether or not at some point we can link advanced AI/ML systems to allow us to produce any material and article of clothing on demand?

Sharpie Ultra Fine Point fabric
Shelley Gardner
I did a test:
-Sharpie alone,
-Sharpie set with a hot iron,
-Sharpie with Fabric Medium,
-Sharpie with Fabric Medium and set with hot iron.
All done on a piece of regular quilting fabric, and then washed just like I would a quilt.
Without Fabric Medium, the Sharpie washed out with normal detergent in a regular wash! With just Fabric Medium, the Sharpie faded a little but was mostly retained, and the last one, Fabric Medium that was heat set with a hot iron retained the truest color and with the least fade.

- donations to charities from US/New York sent to India for manual sorting and resold to Asia and Africa. US/New York clothes is often seasonally based. India has banned sales of overseas imports locally to protect local textile industry. There is an internal clothes resale industry though. Many families have worked in that industry for multiple generations. Any money they make is used for subsistence and also to purchase new kitchen utensils which is then bartered. common health problems across textiles, building, manufacturing, etc... industries due to microparticles being breathed in. Sulphuric acid used to burn in dye to fabrics, bleach used to get them white. No protective equipment and clothing and waste management systems in spite of government regulations/requirements for this which leads to health and environmental problems

- textile recycling is really interesting. Sorting/filtering into similar materials, cleaning, removal of labels, buttons, zippers requires manual intervention which slows things down. Move into designs. ~10% plastic recycling in play and ~1% textile recycling rates. Humans can't recycle at closer to material to waste ratio of 1:1 due to lack of mastery of proper sub-nanotechnology and sub-cellular engineering?

- I've never really thought of Meiosis as cell recycling on a deeper level but it is. The main difference is that it occurs on a cellular level. Moreover, you have to kill off non-useful cells in a systematic/controlled way, break them down into required parts, then recombine then in a way that the body needs. This is identical to textile recycling but at a sub-nanotech/sub-cellular engineering level. Not only is cellular recycling involved but connectivity, maintenance, positioning, and creation of internal/required circuitry as well? Once you string a bunch of cells together in a way that is useful you have a multi-cellular organism

In early 2020, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa turned social media into a human experiment. He gave away ¥1 billion roughly $9 million to 1,000 randomly chosen Twitter followers. Each person received ¥1 million, or around $9,000, with no strings attached. It wasn't a marketing stunt or a promotion. It was a question.
Maezawa wanted to explore whether a sudden financial gift could change lives, increase happiness, or trigger something deeper. He called it a "serious social experiment" and framed it as a testbed for universal basic income. Could money, when given freely, spark genuine emotional and psychological transformation?
The results were personal and scattered, but overwhelmingly moving. Some used the gift to pay off debt. Others started small businesses, helped their families, or simply cried with relief. In a world of complex problems, Maezawa chose radical simplicity. He gave people what they most needed, and then waited to see what would grow.

Random Quotes:
- American buyers waving wads of cash managed to wrest control of a consignment of masks as it was about to be dispatched from China to one of the worst-hit coronavirus areas of France, according to two French officials.
The masks were on a plane at Shanghai airport ready to take off when the US buyers turned up and offered three times what the French were paying.
Jean Rottner, a doctor and president of the GrandEst regional council, said part of the order of several million masks heading for the region, where intensive care units are inundated with Covid-19 patients, had been lost to the buyers.
Reports by the Belgian newspaper Le Soir and Italian daily Corriere della Sera said Turkish-made masks destined for those countries had never arrived. In Italy, it took more than two weeks following a phone call from the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, to Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the masks to be released. In Belgium, supplies had still not been delivered despite a formal police complaint from the country's health ministry.
As well as its export bans, Turkey threatened to commandeer domestic mask producers to make sure they provided only to the state. Local news outlet Hurriyet quoted the interior minister, Suleyman Soylu, as saying that authorities would seize factories if companies did not agree to sell on an exclusive basis to the health ministry.
China, the world's largest mask manufacturer, was first hit by the COVID-19 outbreak and has also been accused of stashing its supplies. But it has also been one of the few countries to later go the other way, sending millions of masks to Europe in sales or as donations. One such shipment bound for Italy transited through the Czech Republic, where it was seized by authorities under disputed circumstances.
Czech authorities denied allegations of state-backed stealing by Giornale Radio Rai, the radio news arm of Italy's public broadcasting company, RAI. They said the masks had made their way to a warehouse north of Prague, where they were confiscated in an anti-trafficking operation. The foreign minister, Tomas Petricek, later said his government had sent 110,000 masks to Rome as compensation.
A similar incident occurred in Kenya, where a shipment of up to 6m masks bound for Germany mysteriously disappeared while transiting through the east African country, although there has been no suggestion that the government was responsible.
Drugs and coronavirus tests, too, are coveted around the globe. After the US president suggested – without fully backed scientific evidence – that a common anti-malaria drug could treat COVID-19, India immediately moved to ban exports of hydroxychloroquine.
Meanwhile, in Israel, the country's Mossad intelligence agency launched several clandestine international operations to fly in hundreds of thousands of coronavirus testing kits.
Local media reports, citing unidentified medical and intelligence officials, suggested the kits had been bought from an enemy state that would not want such a deal to be made public. Many countries do not recognise Israel because of its treatment of Palestinians.
In recent weeks, a few governments have even moved to stockpile domestic food supplies. Kazakhstan, a major flour producer, banned shipments out of the country, while Vietnam, the world's third-largest rice exporter, did the same with rice. And after Serbia moved to block medicine exports, it later decided to ban exports of sunflower oil.
While global food shortages are not anticipated and most countries have kept their markets open, efforts by anxious governments to wrest control of resources have many spooked.
Abraham L Newman, a professor at Georgetown University's department of government, and Henry Farrell, a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University, warned of the risk of the world "sequestering into distrust and selfishness".American buyers waving wads of cash managed to wrest control of a consignment of masks as it was about to be dispatched from China to one of the worst-hit coronavirus areas of France, according to two French officials.

Abraham L Newman, a professor at Georgetown University's department of government, and Henry Farrell, a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University, warned of the risk of the world "sequestering into distrust and selfishness".

- "The world has greatly benefited from America's leadership in situations like this for decades. If America is in a different mode, well, we will get by and I think other configurations will eventually work out, but it would be a loss," he told CNN's Fareed Zakaria.
Coming from the understated Lee, it was the political equivalent of a hand grenade onto the lawn outside Trump's West Wing office, underscoring the pandemic's capacity to upend structures that have been in place for decades.
It's worth remembering that the contest for influence and power in South-east Asia is multipolar. Singapore, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have also shipped medical supplies. These are countries deeply invested in the US keeping skin in the game. In the absence of leadership from the Trump administration, they seek to step into the breach.
The World Bank has warned the pandemic will smash growth forecasts, particularly for developing countries in the region, from nearly 6 per cent in 2019 to as low as -0.5 per cent in 2020.
University of Malaya politics professor Edmund Terence Gomez sums it up like this: "On the one hand everyone is blaming China, because the outbreak happened in Wuhan and they clearly tried to suppress it.
"Of course, people will appreciate the help they get ... whatever China can offer, of course it will be most welcome. But you have to balance that against the impact on economies.
"When this crisis is over, whenever that will be, we will all be impacted by a serious economic crisis and mass bankruptcies ... when confronted with all of these economic problems, when it hits home that we are where we are because of it first emerging in China, I wonder what the backlash will be."
In other words, the Chinese Communist Party's rush to claim regional supremacy is far from guaranteed - no matter how many face masks Beijing ships.
