Online Marketing and Sales Notes, Random Stuff, and More

- this is obviously a continuation of my online marketing posts. In this post we'll be dealing with finding leads and general marketing out on the Internet:
- if you don't have existing targets or leads there are companies that specialise in finding these (corporate and business intelligence). If you can't do that use software automation, target your competitor's clients, hire/bribe/befriend employees at competitors, etc... If you don't have time or resources to do this then outsource it overseas. Favourable exchange rates means that it's likely you'll be able to find someone who can fulfill the terms of your contract. Be aware of privacy and local regulations though

- as an aside, many paywalls can easily be bypassed. As indicated in other post rarely do companies authenticate properly now. Direct links and web archive/crawlers often contain the information in question because to gain access to crawl they need special access, use alternate CLI based browsers/platforms to bypass JavaScript based blocking, use proxies such as Tor to bypass geo-blocking, manual cookie manipulation can be used to bypass cookie counter based systems, addons like uBlock Origin can be used to manually block particular JS elements (pick, preview elements, create new block. This is difficult when it comes to dealing with unique elements though), etc...

Random Quotes:
- Pompeo and other American officials have been threatening other countries that the US would cut off the flow of intelligence to them if they allowed Huawei to participate in the 5G rollouts.

On 30 April, the US said it saw no distinction between the core of a 5G network and its radio access network, and would reconsider sharing information with any ally that used equipment made by Huawei, a statement generally interpreted as a warning to the UK following May's decision.

Robert Strayer, deputy assistant secretary for cyber, international communications and information policy at the State Department, said it was the US position that using gear from Huawei "or any other untrustworthy vendor" in any part of a 5G network was a risk.

In March, it was reported that the American envoy to Germany, Richard Grenell, had written to German Economy Minister Peter Altmeier, saying that if any Chinese vendors were allowed to supply equipment for the 5G networks in Germany, then the US would cut down on its intelligence co-operation with Berlin.

Only Australia and New Zealand have fallen in line with Washington's dictates, but Wellington has indicated that the initial refusal for telco Spark to use Huawei gear is not the end of the matter.

That stance was reiterated by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during a one-day China visit in April. Huawei sued the US on 7 March, seeking to be reinstated as a telco supplier in the country.

Claims about lack of separation between the core and the RAN of a 5G network were shown to be incorrect last November when, as iTWire reported, a 5G trial in Auckland conducted jointly by Huawei and New Zealand telco Spark used a Huawei 5G NR (New Radio on both the C-band and mmWave) and a 4G Radio Access Network, both of which were deployed by using dedicated hardware connected to the Cisco Evolved Packet Core, with each component isolated.

Similar claims have been made by the director of the Australian Signals Directorate, Mike Burgess, and Nigel Phair, director of UNSW Canberra Cyber, as pointed out by Dr Mark Gregory, a network expert from RMIT University.
- But at the heart of connection between bad boy folk hero Trump and his adulating base is a fundamental misunderstanding. Trump is not fighting the establishment. Trump is not using his powers to help his angry supporters. Trump is screwing them.

He attacks their health by eliminating rules which reduce corporate air and water pollution. He hasn’t stopped his repeated attempts to cut their health insurance by Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare. He is dismantling the bank and lending regulations overseen by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Nothing good will come to average Americans from the foreign members of Trump’s club. These are all assaults on the standard of living, present and future, of non-elite America.

The 2017 tax cuts are the best example of how Trump betrays his base. Poor and middle-income Americans got small tax cuts, but also inherit gigantic future deficits to pay for the enormous cuts in corporate and income taxes for the very wealthy.

Trump is good at what he does, but that is bad for everybody else, especially for those who cheer him on.
- The Australian Greens have called on the Federal Government to immediately halt the recovery of money claimed to be owed to Centrelink and calculated through the use of data, after the Department of Human Services wiped a $4000 debt that was at the heart of a Federal Court challenge to the recovery scheme.

The digital rights group, Electronic Frontiers Australia, added its voice, calling for the new government that will be elected on 18 May to rewind what it described as "the infamous Centrelink data-matching program known as robo-debt".

The case was filed by Victorian Legal Aid on behalf of Melbourne nurse Madeleine Masterton, after claims that welfare recipients were being asked to pay back debts that were wrongly calculated, or, in many cases, completely fictitious.

“The Department’s magic recalculation of this debt shows just what a farce this program is. The Department simply cannot explain how debts are calculated through its deeply flawed process,” Greens spokesperson on family and community services, Senator Rachel Siewert, said in a statement.

“Following the dropping of Masterton’s debt the obvious question is - how can we believe any of the calculations?"

The robo-debt scheme was started by the Coalition Government shortly before Christmas 2016, when the DHS sent tens of thousands of letters to people, telling them that their earnings were at variance with what they had declared to the Australian Taxation Office.

They were given up to three weeks to explain. Else, they faced an adverse assessment and a recovery fee of 10%. Human Services Minister Alan Tudge himself was unaware of this recovery fee.

Some letters dealt with payments made six years prior to 2016 and even earlier. The Centrelink website asks people to keep pay slips for six months.

In June 2017, a Senate panel recommended that the program be halted immediately until all the issues around it were fixed.

A year later, it was revealed that a third of the appeals, made by those who were slugged with these debts, had been upheld by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal

Senator Siewert said: “Robo-debt has caused harm to thousands and thousands of Australians. Many people are repaying debts they do not believe they owe but cannot easily disprove, and cannot afford to fight the system any further."

She said the government's act of dropping the debt at the last minute was "clearly a last-ditch effort by the Commonwealth to prevent the whole system from being found to be invalid".
- “Buying drones from the U.S. takes time, is expensive and there is accountability, but buying Chinese drones is now cheap, fast and no one breathes down your neck — the floodgates are open,” said Jalel Harchaoui of the Clingendael Institute in the Netherlands.
- Lopez Obrador has repeatedly pledged to revive Pemex, which has seen its oil output decline for 14 consecutive years. On Friday he said that “very soon” he would be unveiling a reduced tax structure for the company.

Petroleos Mexicanos, as Pemex is formally known, is the world’s most indebted oil company. The federal government depends on the taxes it pays to fund around 15 percent of its budget.

In recent years, the government has taxed more than 80 percent of the company’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

Due in large part to its financial debt of some $106 billion, Pemex faces the possibility that its credit rating could be downgraded to so-called junk status, which could trigger a range of adverse consequences including much higher financing costs.

Two of the three major ratings agencies rate Pemex just barely within their investment grade categories, and all three have said a major factor that weighs on the firm’s finances is the high level of taxation levied on it by the government.
- "WASHINGTON -- The recent crash of an F-35A stealth fighter jet will not stop Tokyo's plans to buy more of the aircraft, which is crucial to strengthening defense capabilities and maintaining a strong relationship with its ally, the U.S., Japan's defense minister said after meeting his American counterpart.

"At this point, we have no specific information that would lead to a change in procurement plans," Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya told reporters after meeting Friday with acting U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan at the Pentagon. Iwaya said he and Shanahan discussed Japan's plans for deploying American defense equipment, including F-35 purchases....

...Japan has received 13 F-35As so far, of which four were built in the U.S. and the rest assembled in Japan from American components. The government plans to procure six more this fiscal year. Going forward, Tokyo will stick to importing finished jets, as it is more cost-effective.

Though Japan's Self-Defense Forces have yet to put F-35s into active service, Tokyo hopes that adding U.S.-made planes to the fleet will help it serve as a greater deterrent, especially given the jet's capability to be equipped with advanced interceptor missiles that could potentially destroy ballistic missiles in midair.

But the April 9 crash during a training mission could derail these plans. Little is known about the crash as both the U.S. and Japan scour the Pacific off the northeast coast of Japan to look for wreckage of the jet. The pilot, who is still missing, had called for the mission to end before his plane went down. Should the incident turn out to have been caused by a defect in the plane, Tokyo could face calls to stop buying them....

...The U.S. has not disclosed details of the F-35's state-of-the-art technology to other countries, and there are worries that China or Russia could get their hands on the wreckage and unlock some of its secrets, including the jet's capability to shoot down ballistic missiles. This is among the reasons why Washington is sending a deep-sea search vessel to the site of the incident to help find the wreckage.

If the cause of the crash turns out to involve sensitive information about the plane, the U.S. could be reluctant to share it with even its close ally Japan. [somebody is drawing a LONG BOW HERE - evidence would be nice - aircraft accident]

The medium-term defense program approved by the Japanese government in late 2018 calls for a record 27 trillion yen ($205 billion) in spending over the next five years, in an effort to bolster Japan's defenses as well as revitalize its defense industry. The F-35 is central to these plans, and a disruption to procurement would throw a wrench in the works."
