Compare Social Media Script, Random Stuff, and More

- wanted to a way to quickly compare social media sites based on product category. Came up with the following. Download it here:
compare_social_media-1.04.zip
https://sites.google.com/site/dtbnguyen
- description is as follows:
# Given the high level use of social media bots now it's hard to
# guage what the difference is between companies/organisations
# out there in the social media arena and why certain individuals
# and organisations may be significantly more popular then others.
#
# The purpose of this script is basically do a side by side comparison
# of social media presence by rendering a PDF version of the website
# (based on category being searched), then creating a JPG version of
# the websites in question so that you can easily compare/contrast things.
#
# I've used wkhtmltopdf because it's much quicker, smaller, lightweight,
# etc... then other options that I've looked at in the past.
#
# Sample data was run using 'mobile+payments' as keywords obviously. I've
# removed jpg_folder and pdf_folder to reduce archive download size obviously.
# thumbnail_folder obviously contains pictures of social media sites in
# in question.
#
# As this is the very first version of the program it may be VERY buggy.
# Please test prior to deployment in a production environment.
#

Random Quotes:
- “One of the trends that bothers me about Silicon Valley,” he continued, is that “more and more of the wealth creation here is not available to most people, and I think that’s very bad in a society with already so much wealth inequality. If there’s a way that new technology can make it practical and possible to democratize this, I think that’d be great.”

- No one ever reads anything anymore!

Especially scrambled Latin. I was fascinated by the filler text “Lorem ipsum” etc.,the first I saw it.

It is scrambled Cicero. In the original, unscrambled, he is writing to defend the epicurean principle of pleasure as the motivating factor in humans.

“The wise man…rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.”

Not too sure if they consider reading an article entirely a pleasure to forgo for a future pleasure or a pain not to be endured because it prevents no future pain.

Or maybe they are just fools.

- The new commitment by Huawei comes shortly after it encountered choppy waters in the US, with a deal for AT&T to sell its phones on plans being cancelled at the last minute.

Additionally, Verizon is reported to have come under pressure from the US Government to stop selling Huawei devices and yielded.

May said: “Thanks to the drive and innovation of UK business, backed by this government, trade between the UK and China is already at record levels. This visit is an opportunity to further showcase the best of British and boost jobs and prosperity throughout the UK.”

“Huawei values long-term partnerships. The UK was one of the first international markets we entered, when we opened our first office there in 2001," said Yafang.

"We have now been working with our major customers in the UK for more than 12 years, helping to build a better connected UK. Over the coming years we look forward to continuing to collaborate with our customers and partners to help keep the UK at the very forefront of the digital age.”

Huawei has also been shafted from an undersea cable project in the AsiaPac region, with the Solomon Islands, under pressure from Australia, withdrawing a contract for the Chinese company to be the main contractor for the project.

Allegations have been made in both the US and Australia that Huawei serves as a means for the Chinese Government to spy on the two countries. These claims have been vehemently denied.

Britain is also a member of the so-called Five Eyes Alliance that includes Canada and New Zealand; the five countries share intelligence data.

- “Investors beautifully admit that most of these start-ups will fail, so all you need to do is raise a few million, appear busy on social media for a few years and then say you ran out of money and blame it on competition, or developers or bitcoin,” he said.

“Alternatively you could ‘hack yourself’ and retire immediately, or just buy yourself a quiet island and let everybody slowly figure out you used a fake name.”

Even a genuine ICO that fails could have ramifications. “I’m afraid that some members of the general public are not well informed enough to start investing in cryptocurrencies,” said Vincent Poon, who runs a crypto-education group in Hong Kong. “For people who don’t know enough to start speculating, is a very risky activity.”

Regulators get edgy when retail investors start speculating on new areas of finance. The Lehman minibonds scandal was 10 years ago but still casts a shadow over the market.

“There are two possible ways forward for token sales in Hong Kong,” said Chu. “The first is that things continue as they are, with the throttle at 150 per cent, and Hong Kong becomes a real centre for cryptocurrencies.

“The second is that there is a black swan event, for example a big token sale turns out to be a scam, and either the Hong Kong or mainland Chinese authorities step in and regulate the whole process much more strictly. Things would still continue, as there is utility in token sales and cryptocurrencies, but much more slowly than they are at present.”
