Market Consolidation/Neo-Feudalism, Random Stuff, and More

- it never occured to me until recently how consolidated things in the world were in the global market place. In this post we'll take a look at how good/bad things may be:
- food industry and agriculture. The entire human food chain is very heavily consolidated. From the supermarkets to the farms where food is produced we're dealing with a very small group of companies?

Coles and Woolworths have both been accused of price gouging amid an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission inquiry into supermarket prices.
A dual Greens-led senate inquiry is also ongoing, with both grocery giants, which control about two-thirds of Australia's supermarket industry, set to give evidence before the committee.
The companies have denied allegations of inflating prices.

- telecommunications. If you watch this sector you'll realise that there's basically no competition. Lots of people churn between providers but overall market share has been relatively static for a long time. At both the provider level as well as the retail level things are the same. You're normally looking at the same companies
Author Stefan Pongratz said analysis of the statistics indicated that revenue rankings remained stable between 2019 and the first three quarters of 2020, with Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson, ZTE, Cisco, Ciena and Samsung ranked as the top seven suppliers and accounting for more than 80% of the total.

More than 90 percent of the "programming" that we consume is controlled by just a handful of exceedingly powerful corporations, and those corporations are owned by the elite of the world. So when you endlessly consume their "programming", you are willingly being bombarded by news and entertainment that reflects their beliefs, their values and their agendas. They openly admit that they are trying to shape the future of society, and up to this point they have been extremely successful.

The sight of North Korea's chubby leader, Kim Jong Un, shaking hands with Vladimir Putin on September 13th—having travelled by train to a spaceport in Russia's far east to discuss selling its dictator a stash of North Korean weapons—was remarkable both on its own terms and for what it said about the business of selling arms. The world's five biggest arms-sellers (America, Russia, France, China and Germany) account for more than three-quarters of exports. But up-and-coming weapons producers are giving the old guard a run for their money. They are making the most of opportunities created by shifting geopolitics. And they are benefiting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mr Kim's trip to Russia followed a visit to Pyongyang in July by Sergei Shoigu, Russia's defence minister, who wanted to see if North Korea could provide gear that would help his country's faltering war effort. North Korea would love to find buyers for its kit. And few regimes are willing to sell Russia arms. China has so far been deterred from providing much more than dual-purpose chips (although it could yet channel more lethal stuff through North Korea). Only Iran has obliged, selling some 2,400 of its Shahed "kamikaze" drones.

- homes and real estate. If you understand some of the scripts/programs that I wrote earlier you'll notice how closely correlated national policy seems to be to geopolitical (regional and international policy). Some people think asset bubbles come from nowhere. It's obvious that they are often created, can be curtailed/moderated, can be a consequence of filter down effects of poor policy at regional/international level which filters down into national policy (if you can't create income you have to have asset price growth but you're redemption rate needs to be kept in check relative to your growth rate), etc...
Notice most investment funds are split into commercial vs consumer real estate?

The majority (73%) of respondents believe housing "should be a basic human right that everyone should have access to", far higher than those who described it as a "foundation for vibrant neighbourhoods and communities" (18%) or "a vehicle for growing personal wealth" (9%).
But asked how the housing system was now operating, 35% described it as a "vehicle for growing personal wealth".

- medical, dentistry, optometry, etc... I didn't previously understand why some medical professionals were doing "strange things" but I recognise signs of corruption now. Doctors saying they need more appointments then is standard, charging more then they should when you have private insurance, asking you to pay for things that aren't required/overservicing, asking you for checkups earlier then required, etc... Bizarre but some governments not allowed to negotiate for better prices on medicines or treatments?

OPSM is just a brand of the largest eyewear manufacturer in the world https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxottica
Mostly seen in ANZ because that's where it was founded before the conglomerate takeover.
Current estimated value of luxottica is USD88.4 billion.
It owns almost every brand you've ever heard of.
Maybe their vertical integrations add value. Maybe not.

Criticism
Monopolistic pricing practices
The company has been criticized for the high price of its brand-name glasses, such as Ray-Ban, Oakley, and several others. A 2012 60 Minutes segment focused on whether the company's extensive holdings in the industry were used to keep prices high. Luxottica owns not only a large portfolio of brands (over a dozen[55]) such as Ray-Ban and Oakley but also retailers such as Sunglass Hut, Lenscrafters and Oliver Peoples, the optical departments at Target and Sears, as well as key eye insurance groups including the second largest glasses insurance firm in the US, EyeMed. It has been accused of operating a complete monopoly on the optical industry and overcharging for its products; for example, temporarily dropping then-competitor Oakley from its frame design list, then, when the company stock crashed, purchasing the company, then increasing the prices of its Ray-Ban sunglasses. In addition, it has been argued that, by owning the vision insurance company EyeMed, it also controls part of the buyers' market as well.[50]
The company has said that the market is highly competitive, and that their frames account for ≈10% of sales worldwide and ≈20% in the United States.[56][55] Euromonitor International estimated that Luxottica's market share was 14% worldwide, with the second-largest company in the industry, Essilor, holding a 13% market share. The third-largest player was Johnson & Johnson, with a 3.9% market share. In October 2018, Luxottica and Essilor merged into a single company, EssilorLuxottica, which now occupies nearly 30% of the global market share and represents almost a billion pairs of lenses and frames sold annually.[57]
The HBO series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has criticized the company as a prominent instance of corporate consolidation,[58] as has the TruTV series Adam Ruins Everything.[59]
In 2019, LensCrafters founder E. Dean Butler spoke to the Los Angeles Times, admitting that Luxottica's dominance of the eyewear industry had resulted in price markups of nearly 1,000%. In the interview, Butler noted "You can get amazingly good frames, with a Warby Parker level of quality, for $4 to $8. For $15, you can get designer-quality frames, like what you'd get from Prada." When told that some eyeglasses cost as much as $800 in the United States, Butler remarked, "I know. It's ridiculous. It's a complete rip-off."[60][61][62]

hospital private market ownership
https://www.afr.com/property/commercial/private-hospitals-in-a-real-estate-class-of-their-own-hmc-capital-20230330-p5cwln
1. Background
The private hospital sector plays a significant role in providing specialised healthcare in Australia. The aim of this research is to examine trends in the activity and capacity of the private hospital sector, against a context of falling demand for private health insurance and reduced affordability for private healthcare. In 2017/18, around 47% of all hospitals in Australia were private, with 657 private hospitals, including 357 private freestanding day hospitals (AIHW, 2019). In 2016/17 62% of private hospitals were 'for profit' (ABS, 2018). The private hospital sector had around one-third (34,300 beds in 2016-17) of total hospital beds in Australia, comprised 40% (4.5 million separations in 2017-18) of total hospital separations, undertook 66% (1.49 million admissions) of all elective surgery, 33% (9.98 million patient days) of total patient days (AIHW, 2019), and had a total income of $14.3 billion (ABS, 2018). The revenue of private hospitals comes from a range of sources, with almost 80% from private health insurers that include government subsidies, 13% from federal and state governments, 3.8% direct from patients, and 2.3% from other sources (ABS, 2018)
A key issue for the healthcare sector has been the fall in the proportion of the population covered by private health insurance (PHI). After steady increases in coverage since subsidies were increased 2001, the percentage of the population having PHI hospital cover fell from 47.4% in June 2015 to 43.6% in March 2020 (the bars in Figure 1). The solid line in Figure 1 shows that the total number of insured persons also started to flatten out around the same time, peaking in the first quarter of 2017 at 11,353,517, and then falling every quarter until March 2020 (by 1.15% to 11,223,363: a net fall of 130,154 insured persons). The net change in total number of insured persons is relatively small. The issue, however, is the composition of the change. Since March 2017, most of those dropping cover have been aged under 60 years old where the number of insured persons fell by 318,716 and increased for those aged over 60 years old by 188,562 (Figure 2). This causes a problem in insurance markets with community rated premiums where the premiums paid by the young and relatively healthy are used to subsidise the costs incurred by the older and on average less healthy members.
The reasons for the drop in PHI coverage are consumers' increasing concerns about the value of private health care. This includes growth in out of pocket costs, including private health insurance premiums and fees for medical services provided by GPs and non-GP specialists, as well as the decline in coverage of private health insurance policies. Consumer  price indices for healthcare have grown faster than any other component of the consumer price index (Figure 3), with the medical and hospital component growing the fastest, which includes PHI premiums as well as doctors' fees. Since July 2012, healthcare costs have also grown faster than wages, which have been growing but at a much slower rate. These trends have produced a widening gap between growth in private health costs and household incomes over time, with a cumulative effect on affordability that is associated with the fall in PHI coverage and membership from June 2015.

Very difficult for new entrants and existing incumbents have a hard time taking market share from one another. ~91% of cars purchased via financing. Dealers are fronts for finance/bank companies? Dealers used to use discretion to determine loan interest rates but are now forced to have a standard rate for everyone and have to be more transparent. You're forced to pay via financing in order to pay for car, can't pay for it outright? You can't survive on basic salary so have to push finance to create a comfortable lifestyle. Work with independent financiers to get better rate. ~4% better rates possible

Takeovers
Thames Water plc was acquired by the German utility company RWE in 2001.[6]
On 17 October 2006, following several years of criticism about failed leakage targets in the UK, RWE announced it would sell Thames Water for £8 billion to Kemble Water Holdings Ltd, a consortium led by the Australian Macquarie Group which appointed David Owens as CEO.[7] In December 2006, the sale of Thames Water's British operation went ahead, with RWE keeping the overseas operations.[8]
Under the new ownership, the company re-focused its efforts on improving its operational performance and in 2007 announced the largest-ever capital investment programme (£1 billion p.a.) of any UK water company.[9]
However, during the 11 years of Macquarie's ownership, which ended in 2017, there were substantial dividend payouts to shareholders. In this period debts more than tripled from £3.2bn to £10.5bn (unadjusted for inflation) as Macquarie borrowed against the company's assets to increase dividend payments. During these 11 years £2.8bn was paid to shareholders, 40% of the total £7bn in dividends paid in the 32 years from 1990 to 2022.[10]
Thames Water was a Tier Three sponsor of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.[11]

- automotive markets. This includes cars, trains, buses, etc... If you work on cars or are interested in them, you'll notice lots of commonality of parts between manufacturers? Sometimes some brands don't even bother to rebrand parts so you can see Mercedes parts on McLarens, BMW parts on Rolls Royce, GM and Audi powerplants across various vehicles, Ford parts on Lamborghinis, etc... Other times they rebrand but change part numbers so that it's more difficult to figure out what parts are in common use, etc... What's worse is when they make tiny changes to make it incompatible or make purchase of tiny parts impossible which means you have buy an entire assembly. It used to be you could go to the local car wrecking yard to get parts for older cars. Now a lot of the time, most of the cars at the wrecking yard are completely stripped of the most common parts that someone would need from them. When you look things up, it looks like have all gone to specialist parts companies. Either wrecking yards have agreements with existing breakers specialists or else they come in and sweep everything up regularly?

Most fossil fuel companies have produced more emissions in the seven years since the Paris Agreement was signed than the seven years before the major climate pact, a new report reveals.
It found that 80 per cent of the fossil fuel and cement emissions since the Paris Agreement have come from just 57 producers.
State-owned oil producer Saudi Aramco has produced the most carbon emissions since the Paris Agreement, making up 4.8 per cent of global emissions.
The aim of the Paris Agreement forged in 2015 is for all countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to keep global warming to at least 1.5 degrees.

Expensive cars, farming equipment, and gardening equipment often have contract clauses which don't allow for modification or repair by third parties outside of their authorised dealers (voids their warranty), does not allow for their resale within certain time periods after new purchase, often forces the purchaser to allow the manufacturer first dibs if they do decide to resell, they have trade-in programs but often with terrible resale value, they often prefer to destroy gear then to allow people to resell goods on the secondary market, etc...

- it sounds crazy but control of garbage/recycling and the repair/used/secondary market is highly predatory. In theory, consumer law says that the original manufacturer is repsonsible for repairs (and recycling as well) but what a lot of companies do goes way beyond this. They limit limit access to parts, destroy/control secondary market, ban access to manuals, make it difficult or impossible for third parties to repair them, etc... which means that anyone outside of the umbrella of the original manufacturer is unable to make money easily without resorting to extreme measures often. The irony is that I've discovered that most of the people inside of the umbrella are often less skilled then those that had to learn by themselves how to design and build things by themselves, reverse engineer things, hack things generally, etc...

Nationals MP Anne Webster says Australians need to be "aware" of the risks associated with voting in Independents.
Ms Webster's comments comes in light of the latest polling which suggests Anthony Albanese could be governing in a minority government with the Greens, as well as the Teals.
"Do we really want to go through the Windsor-Oakeshott Gillard and back to Rudd years all over again?" Ms Webster said to Sky News host Chris Kenny.
"It is all about horse trading, it's all about keeping independents on side.
"It's not a government that can come with a strong agenda.
"Australia needs to be aware of what they are really doing when they are voting in Independents."

aircraft market share global
As of 2016, Flight Global fleet forecast 26,860 single aisle deliveries for a $1,360 bn value at a compound annual growth rate of 5% for the 2016–2035 period, with a 45% market share for Airbus (12,090), 43% for Boeing (11,550), 5% for Bombardier Aerospace (1,340), 4% for Comac (1,070) and 3% for Irkut Corporation (810); Airbus predicted 23,531 and Boeing 28,140.[9] Single-aisles generate a vast majority of profits for both, followed by legacy twin aisles like the A330 and B777: Kevin Michaels of AeroDynamic Advisory estimated the B737 to have a 30% profit margin and the B777 classic 20%.[10]
...
Orders and deliveries
It took Boeing 42 years and 1 month to deliver its 10,000th 7series aircraft (October 1958 – November 2000), and 42 years and 5 months for Airbus to achieve the same milestone (May 1974 – October 2016).[108] Boeing deliveries considerably exceeded that of Airbus throughout the 1980s. In the 1990s, this lead narrowed significantly but Boeing remained ahead of Airbus. In the 2000s, Airbus assumed the lead in narrow-body aircraft. By 2010, little difference remained between Airbus and Boeing in both the wide-body or narrow-body categories or the range on offer.
By July 2021, Airbus had a 62% share of the airliner backlog compared to 38% for Boeing.[35]

- as I've said previously there are remarkable similarities between old social systems and the one we currently have in place. If you simply talk about things slightly differently then things are easier to understand. For instance, instead of talking of assets you talk of markets/fiefdoms. If you understand that most markets have are highly concentrated and difficult to break into then you'll understand why governments favour current employers so much? They've effectively conceded that unless you externalise (force favourable trading terms with an external entity such as another country, region, organisations/companies, etc...) then you don't really have a chance in your local market. This is important because it allows you make better decisions. Basically, the large companies/organisation buy out companies, attempt to neutralise, or try to destroy those that are a threat to them. Not much different from the middle ages except our tools of destruction/weapons are different. Interesting debates out there on class divide and the problems that each class has to deal with
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_Middle_Ages
Feudalism, also known as the feudal system, was a combination of legal, economic, military, cultural, and political customs that flourished in medieval Europe from the 9th to 15th centuries. Broadly defined, it was a way of structuring society around relationships derived from the holding of land in exchange for service or labour.
The classic definition, by François Louis Ganshof (1944),[1] describes a set of reciprocal legal and military obligations of the warrior nobility and revolved around the key concepts of lords, vassals, and fiefs.[1] A broader definition, as described by Marc Bloch (1939), includes not only the obligations of the warrior nobility but the obligations of all three estates of the realm: the nobility, the clergy, and the peasantry, all of whom were bound by a system of manorialism; this is sometimes referred to as a "feudal society".
Although it is derived from the Latin word feodum or feudum (fief),[2] which was used during the Medieval period, the term feudalism and the system it describes were not conceived of as a formal political system by the people who lived during the Middle Ages.[3] Since the publication of Elizabeth A. R. Brown's "The Tyranny of a Construct" (1974) and Susan Reynolds's Fiefs and Vassals (1994), there has been ongoing inconclusive discussion among medieval historians as to whether feudalism is a useful construct for understanding medieval society.[10]

- one thing you always have at the back of your mind is that do something people move to asset speculation because they don't have the opportunity to be able to make money from a salary based job? Technically, China and the US are the only two countries who have only done well in the modern era and have the genuine ability to manage their economies?

- markets are clearly not free? Free market ideology assumes that people work in their own as well as the collective interest at all times. That's a fallacy? My definition of market saturation is when incoming participants don't have a genuine chance of establishing a viable business.

- betting markets and financial markets are the same but opposite. In financial markets, they bet often early (to destroy competitors or gain market share) and big vs betting markets where they are late and big. In essence, when you making a "good trade" you're betting on where the "big money" is coming from. You can determine this more easily if you have better access to information. Depending on what market you're operating in this can mean anything from banks, governments, sovereign funds, fund managers, etc... The type of trades that Soros and other global macro traders engage in on a continual basis aren't possible if the world didn't behave this way? The irony is that as you work with more companies/organisations of varying size you realise how far apart the real world is versus the world that you're told. Endless lies, hypocrisy, corruption, etc...

- throughout my life I've heard people say that economics doesn't make sense, the legal/justice system doesn't look right, the medical system doesn't work, the education system doesn't make sense or we don't really gain much from it, etc... Everything makes sense if you understand corruption and you understand the similarities from old socio-economic systems to now, how the elite wanted to preserve their way of life and their entitlements as well as that of others around and beneath them. I thought many strange things of the education system. Some people told me the education system was designed to teach you "how to think, not what to think". I never thought that made any sense given the way they did things. I was told to quote and wasn't really allowed to have any thoughts of my own the higher up I went, only to quote from academic journals because people outside of these bounds were somehow incapable of thought? If I'm correct (much historical documentation seems to suggest so) then comtemporary IQ tests measure similarities in thought patterns/behaviours with those already at the top. The historical origin of measurement means why the psychological profile between military and politics is so similar? Same mentality is being looked for? Note, that much of what we learn is often learn isn't as helpful as we were told between school and the real world. I was told to pick a scale in and then pick notes to begin to compose a song in school, I found it easier to hum/sing notes and then create a song around that; I was told to work on stroke and become less lazy while swimming, the teacher didn't realise I was struggling for breath and hadn't picked a more comfortable rhythm. I can now swim for hours non-stop unless I need a drink or food; I was told to just work hard and that this would be reciprocated by my employer/s, this hasn't been the case for the most part; I was told that what I learnt in school was critical to my future success but the reality is that I only tend to use mid-to-high level mathematics/physics/chemistry/biology/law/economics on personal projects, etc...

- the frustrating thing with markets are consolidated as they are is that we're all doomed in some way or fashion? You can't make income without becoming subservient to the existing elite in some way or form. Whether you seek patronage via an employer or a loan to compete in the fiefdom/marketplace your life is forfeit for a particular period of time as you have to enter into a contract with your patriarch that is mutually beneficial to both of you. The obvious irony is that while people talk about a "fair go" under profit driven systems when loans are given the lender generally has the advantage, under usury things are more balanced but few move towards the latter. You have to enter into a deal with the devil so to speak. If you don't come from money you risk the chance of forfeiting your assets, savings, or your life? The tactics employed by the top aren't fair or just. Animals have a more coherent and better sense of justice?

- one interesting thing is that a lot of kids don't actually realise that because many of the "old ways" have been politically preserved so have entitlements and powers as well. This means that the political, economic, finance, business, sectors are effectively acting as a proxy for the middle and upper class without the knowledge of much of the rest of society. The rest of society may not realise it but only these groups were allowed to make money in the distance past and this seems to be have been largely preserved to now and that's why competition is so fierce for these jobs. Promotion of "yes men" are likely a consequence of the method of promotion not an accident? The other irony of the advent of contracting and outsourcing is that they're normally outsourced for former employees of the organisation in question so there's not really a genuine chance for outsiders to enter?

big 4 consulting market share
Revenue comparison
In 2010, Deloitte, with its 1.8% growth, was able to outpace PricewaterhouseCoopers' 1.5% growth, gaining "first place" in revenue size, and became the largest firm in the professional services industry. In 2011, PwC re-gained first place with 10% revenue growth. In 2013, these two firms claimed the top two spots with only a $200 million revenue difference, that is, within half a percent. However, Deloitte saw faster growth than PwC over the next few years (largely due to acquisitions) and reclaimed the title of largest of the Big Four in Fiscal Year 2016.[17][18]

It was estimated that the Big Four had about a 67% share of the global accountancy market in 2012, while most of the rest was divided among so called mid-tier players, such as BDO, Crowe Global and Grant Thornton.[19]

Corporations
Between the 14th and 19th centuries, royal charters were used to create chartered companies – for-profit ventures with shareholders, used for exploration, trade and colonisation. Early charters to such companies often granted trade monopolies, but this power was restricted to Parliament from the end of the 17th century.[15] Until the 19th century, royal charters were the only means other than an act of parliament by which a company could be incorporated; in the UK, the Joint Stock Companies Act 1844 opened up a route to incorporation by registration, since when incorporation by royal charter has been, according to the Privy Council, "a special token of Royal favour or ... a mark of distinction".[5][16][17]
The use of royal charters to incorporate organisations gave rise to the concept of the "corporation by prescription". This enabled corporations that had existed from time immemorial to be recognised as incorporated via the legal fiction of a "lost charter".[18] Examples of corporations by prescription include Oxford and Cambridge universities.[19][20]
Universities and colleges
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, of the 81 universities established in pre-Reformation Europe, 13 were established ex consuetudine without any form of charter, 33 by Papal bull alone, 20 by both Papal bull and imperial or royal charter, and 15 by imperial or royal charter alone. Universities established solely by royal (as distinct from imperial) charter did not have the same international recognition – their degrees were only valid within that kingdom.[21]
The first university to be founded by charter was the University of Naples in 1224, founded by an imperial charter of Frederick II. The first university founded by royal charter was the University of Coimbra in 1290, by King Denis of Portugal, which received papal confirmation the same year. Other early universities founded by royal charter include the University of Perpignan (1349; papal confirmation 1379) and the University of Huesca (1354; no confirmation), both by Peter IV of Aragon; the Jagiellonian University (1364; papal confirmation the same year) by Casimir III of Poland; the University of Vienna (1365; Papal confirmation the same year) by Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria; the University of Caen (1432; Papal confirmation 1437) by Henry VI of England; the University of Girona (1446; no confirmation) and the University of Barcelona (1450; papal confirmation the same year), both by Alfonso V of Aragon; the University of Valence (1452; papal confirmation 1459) by the Dauphin Louis (later Louis XI of France); and the University of Palma (1483; no confirmation) by Ferdinand II of Aragon.[22]

politics is war by other means foucault
https://thestrategybridge.org/the-bridge/2019/11/18/a-war-by-other-means
Still, for Foucault power is never conceived as monolithic or autonomous, but rather is a matter of superficially stable structures emerging on the basis of constantly shifting relations underneath, caused by an unending struggle between people. Foucault explains this in terms of the inversion of Clausewitz's dictum that war is diplomacy by other means into the claim that "politics is war by other means." For Foucault, apparently peaceful and civilized social arrangements are supported by people locked in a struggle for supremacy, which is eternally susceptible to change, via the force of that struggle itself.

Random Quotes:
- More than half of Canberra's trainee doctors are failing their exams because they are overworked and burnt out, an internal review has found.
Key points:
An internal review has pointed to long working hours, poor mentoring and little time for study as reasons Canberra's junior doctors are failing exams
Trainee doctors in the ACT's health system fail twice as often as the national average
The reviewers also found regular breaches of safe work requirements among trainee doctor rosters
ACT physicians doing their basic training had a pass rate of just 37 per cent last year, far below the national average of 70.6 per cent.
A review commissioned by ACT Health to determine why found staff in the Hospital Medical Office were regularly working paid and unpaid overtime.
After auditing staff rosters, the reviewers determined ACT Health had breached its legal obligations on multiple occasions.
The reviewers, Australia's first Chief Medical Wellness Officer Bethan Richards and Physician educator Anne Powell, pointed to a culture of overworked and under-supported doctors at Canberra's hospitals as the reason for high failure rates.
It found a burnout rate among basic physician trainees of 78.9 per cent, which was "well above the international average of 51 per cent".
"Following several interviews with basic physician trainees, it became apparent that trainee wellbeing and burnout may be significant factors contributing to the low clinical exam pass rate," the review said.
"There is a need for a review of safe working hours with a balance between training and service delivery."

- The tidal range of Cape Cod Bay is so large that over 50 sq km (19 sq miles) of sand flats are revealed by the retreating water every day. For the pods of dolphins who chase their food here, the shallows can all too quickly turn into a maze of draining water. In the past, the chances of survival were poor.
"Prior to 2010, the leading thinking was that anytime a single dolphin stranded the animal must be sick, diseased, separated from its group and the only responsible thing to do was euthanise it. [But] we can give the animal a second chance," Sharp adds.
One thing that has changed for groups like Ifaw is the introduction of new technology. Across the 1,100km-plus (700 miles) coastline of Cape Cod, the Ifaw team uses a bespoke app to help coordinate their 220-strong volunteer team to respond quickly to stranding emergencies. It allows rapid communication of stranding locations so those volunteers closest and with the most relevant training, can be on site as quickly as possible.
To add to the app, they also have a fully-equipped mobile healthcare unit, or ambulance. Here IV drips, blood tests, ultrasound organ scans and heart monitoring can be administered to rescued dolphins while they are driven to the nearest deepwater release site at the tip of the peninsula.
But such technology is no panacea, and is only part of the story.

- DiMartino Booth says don't take the stock market highs at face value because if you look deeper, things are not that good.  DiMartino Booth says,
"The concentration of the seven largest stocks is now $8 trillion.  That is larger than most countries, by the way.  Without them, the S&P 500, the broadest benchmark stock index in the country, would be . . . a down year in the stock market."
On the other hand, DiMartino Booth says the bailouts mostly benefited Wall Street and not Main Street.  DiMartino Boot explains,
"This is the haves and have nots of credit.  If you are a small or midsize company, good luck.  It's very difficult to find credit.  If you are the biggest companies . . . you don't even have to have profits.  You can just get as much money as you want to keep going.  So, it is as bifurcated as it comes. . . . There has not been as much discussion as needed about the monetary policy at the Federal Reserve that has done a bang-up job of keeping the largest companies going while we have watched a lot of Mom and Pops, that . . . just needed a liquidity bridge, go by the wayside.  This has been a tremendous fiscal and monetary failing."
DiMartino Booth also warns, "As long as you have this type of damage and business travel being eviscerated, you are going to see permanent damage to the economy.  You will see entire hotel chains close down, and those jobs be lost for good in many cases."
On unemployment in America, Di Martino Booth predicts, "at least 25% of these job loses will be permanent in nature stretching out through 2021. . . . I think there will be permanent damage to the housing market too . . . . Now, what we are seeing are evictions."
Why are gold and silver prices taking off in the past few months?  DiMartino Booth says,
"The reason you have seen as much interest as you have in gold comes down to something very simple.  We are in a speculative ball right now.  Whether you are talking about junk bonds or the stock market, everything has gone completely haywire...
When the peanut butter hits the fan, gold is the one place where investors can find the protection they need...
As long as there is anxiety and disruption potential, that is what makes gold the perfect hedge whether you see deflation or inflation further out on the horizon."

History
Further information: Historic recurrence
The German romantic philosopher-historians, especially Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803) and Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762–1814), dwelt on the theme of uniqueness in the late 18th century. They de-emphasized the political state and instead emphasized the uniqueness of the Volk, comprising the whole people, their languages and traditions. Each nation, considered as a cultural entity with its own distinctive history, possessed a "national spirit", or "soul of the people" (in German: Volksgeist). This idea had a strong influence in the growth of nationalism in 19th-century European lands—especially in ones ruled by élites from somewhere else.[1][2]
Claims of exceptionality have been made for many countries, including the United States, Australia,[3] France, Germany, Greece,[4] India, Pakistan, Imperial Japan, Iran, Israel, North Korea, South Africa,[5][6] Spain, Britain, the USSR, the European Union, and Thailand.[7][8] Historians have added many other cases, including historic empires such as China, the Ottoman Empire, ancient Rome, and ancient India, along with a wide range of minor kingdoms in history.[9]
Criticism
Belief in exceptionalism can represent erroneous thought analogous to historicism in that it overemphasizes peculiarities in an analysis and ignores or downplays meaningful comparisons[citation needed]. A group may assert exceptionalism in order to exaggerate the appearance of difference, to invoke a wider latitude of action, and to avoid recognition of similarities that would reduce perceived justifications[citation needed]. This can be an example of special pleading, a form of spurious argumentation that ignores relevant bases for meaningful comparisons[citation needed].

- "The market was already very saturated pre-COVID-19," Reya Sunshine, a stripper who is now solely working online, told Newsweek. "It will be rough for strippers or escorts who move online and haven't yet built an online audience. It takes time."
Shelby Paris, an experienced sex worker who said she is losing thousands of dollars a month because online work is now her only source of income, said the move to digital is harder than people imagine, especially for those attempting it for the first time.
"From personal experience, I feel like a lot of newer models will flood the cam rooms, but they'll realize it is super hard and not follow through with getting on," Paris told Newsweek. "It is hard to cam and I give the all full-time camgirl major props for hustling and continuing to get on every single day."

- The current complaint against Google alleges the company has illegally maintained monopolies in search and search advertising by:
Entering into exclusivity agreements that forbid pre-installation of any competing search service;
Entering into tying and other arrangements that force pre-installation of its search applications in prime locations on mobile devices and make them undeletable, regardless of consumer preference;
Entering into long-term agreements with Apple that require Google to be the default — and de facto exclusive — general search engine on Apple's popular Safari browser and other Apple search tools; and
Generally using monopoly profits to buy preferential treatment for its search engine on devices, Web browsers, and other search access points, creating a continuous and self-reinforcing cycle of monopolisation.
At the time the suit was filed, Google described the DoJ's action as deeply flawed and claimed it would do nothing to help consumers.
A statement issued by Kent Walker, the search company's senior vice-president of Global Affairs, said: "People use Google because they choose to, not because they're forced to, or because they can't find alternatives.
"This lawsuit would do nothing to help consumers. To the contrary, it would artificially prop up lower-quality search alternatives, raise phone prices, and make it harder for people to get the search services they want to use."
The current US administration has only another 64 days in office before the Biden team is sworn in. Given that, this effort to rein in the company may end as others have – in failure.

- The absence of a fully fledged system of naval bases in the zone of responsibility of the 5th Operational Squadron of the Soviet Navy (the Mediterranean Sea) resulted in warships and submarines having to spend significantly more time out of port. Lengthy navigations over the Mediterranean Sea and back required a lot of resources and, more importantly, took a toll on the ships' systems.
In some cases, the problem was so acute that the navy's leadership at the time had plans to create artificial islands that could serve as logistics support centers. The military scientific committee of the Soviet Navy was tasked with solving the issue.
Most of the Soviet sailors, however, relied on whatever means and tactics they could come up with to offset the unfavorable conditions. For example, they developed ways of organizing 'drifting' makeshift bases in the ocean. Floating bases and support vessels were used in areas where the sea was generally calm, and near sea-ice edges.
Another method involved using deep-sea drift anchors or heavy mooring equipment (barrels with multiple anchors weighing over 75 tons) in waters up to 300 meters deep and with wind speed no more than six or seven on the Beaufort scale. Another potential solution was to install floating ocean platforms at depths of up to 100 meters.
A Sudan base is just the first step

Located at the crossroads of international trade routes – key transportation arteries pass through this hub, from Europe, through the Suez Canal, into the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, and further into Asia and Australia – a base in Djibouti will give Russia vastly improved access to the Indian Ocean.
