Becoming a Golf Coach, Becoming a Better Golfer, and More

- whether you're a hacker or a really good player most people involved in golf have probably wondered what it's like to become a golf coach and/or a better player. That's the topic of this post:
- the traditional way is via the PGA. This program requires you to pass a playing test (requires a handicap of 3 and lower) and undergo several years of training
- there is an amateur coaching program though and the same applies across most countries
golf coach certification site:au
- there are several streams/training programs depending on how you want your golfing career to turn out
- there are alternate pathways obviously but they're not as well known. They are often cheaper, are less time intensive, less rigorous, and you're less likely to be able to get a job at the end of it. You could end up calling semi-professional coaches/mid-handicappers your compatriots (entry requirements are much more relaxed). That said, most golf instructors are technically self employed

- the best golf coaches I've come across can explain things in a away that make sense. I've never come across anyone who has ever told people not to cast in terms of centrifugal force until recently. Think of it in terms of hammer throw. Application of greatest acceleration at a later point is likely to be more effective then early in the piece. In the context of the golf swing things in terms of lower body and gravity to drive the swing first and it makes more sense. This matches up science and golf

- don't expect miracle ball striking out of your local pro. They can definitely play the game but they don't practice often enough and there's often a gap between them a tour pro, and the absolute elite of the game. The elite can pull off shots on demand. For others, it will take practice or multiple shots. That said, if you check things out numbers and they can often be "juiced". Good example of the difference between local pro and tour pro is the following game between Lee Westwood and Mark Crossfield. Notice how even though Lee Westwood is not taking things too seriously he seems to have an easier time getting around?

- one interesting for me is the reason why so many people don't take lessons. I sit on the driving range and watch on the golf course and I've sort of realised that that most of them don't know what's wrong with their own swings. My guess is that most see it as something deceptively simple, people don't see value, some teaching pros don't explain things well, people don't want to take it too seriously, etc...?
THE JOURNEY GOLF LESSONS FOR REAL STUDENTS
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-yMxw6TSwy4rS4wTbDuJ_dhybf-p487E
why don't people take golf lessons
- if I were ever to become a coach (even if only part time) I'd likely try to focus on the following: injury/pain free swing, independence of the golfer, reduced practice for maximum results, a pathway to continual improvement, focus on setup rather then in swing changes, attempt to reduce impact of timing and tempo as an issue in the swing, philosophical neutrality/indifference, a balance between power and accuracy, individualisation of the swing according to a golfers preference and body, a short and long term game plan, etc...
- I see teaching pros/coaches in a completely different way. They're not people who you go to for specific advice. They help shape you and your game. If you want to become an good player you need them but if you can't do without them you're in trouble whether you're an amateur or professional

- if you haven't come across portable launch monitors/swing analyzers they can be good and bad. Like other training devices they tend to have a particular bias/style/philosophy in mind. Ultimately, this means that they could end up training you in the wrong way. For me, the only genuinely reliable way is to use these devices alongside a physical golf course/driving range type environment
3bays swing analyzer review
sureshot launch monitor review
swing analyzer melbourne site:au
- this is opposed to the other option of going to full simulators. The problem with these is that calibration can be a big problem (I setup devices like this at one point in the past for a local golf shop). From time to time, they can give really whacky readings without a genuine explanation of what's going on (you just ignore this. Mark Crossfield uses multiple devices at the same time. Trackman is one of the ones that doesn't do this as much based on what I've seen but that basically works on Doppler RADAR technology which is completely different from other systems which often measure some things and guess the rest)
- the other frustrating thing about these devices is that they can cost a lot and they aren't that accurate. I've found a free way to guesstimate swing speed is to listen for sound frequency. The faster you have move your golf club the higher the pitch should be. Another way is through the use of plastic/rubber style practice balls. The harder you can swing the more deformed/compressed the practice will be. One thing that's been passing through my mind has been experimenting with limited ball flight balls so that I could practice entirely at home. One interesting thing about Birdieballs is how similar they react when compared with foam practice balls. I guess you could achieve a similar effect by colouring each side with a different colour. This way you can determine whether shots are going off axis (namely, whether they will hook or slice)
birdie balls site:au
- use the softest equipment that is controllable. It just makes things more enjoyable. Nobody wants to swing all out at all of the time. It can put a lot of strain on the body and what used to be a game is no longer a game
- learning mistakes by yourself makes you more independent but can be frustrating because there can sometimes be knowledge gaps that have to be filled, you can't see/feel the problem, you can't do/know everything yourself, etc... It's a lot of work
- the following is the history of Dustin Johnson. Current World No 1 according to the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR)
Examine the field for a few tournaments where Dustin Johnson entered. It sounds absolutely crazy to less experienced players but a handicap of +1 or +2 won't make it (won't be able to consistently make cuts/money on primary tours. It will allow you to make money on secondary tours but even then it's a struggle if you add up all the costs, http://www.cgatour.com.cn/en/index.html). You need to be able to go genuinely deep regularly to make it as a pro (into the mid-60s every 2 or 3 rounds of golf). If not, it's just a few years of golfing holiday/tragedy (depending on your perspective. The reason why it may be agony is that it's only at this point that many realise they can't really make it, they've burnt through their savings/sponsorship money, etc... If they knew from the start that it wasn't really possible it's not so bad).
http://www.owgr.com/en/Events/EventResult.aspx?eventid=6583
- once you understand how many professionals score then you begin to understand some of the decisions that amateurs go in turning professional. Some completely revamp their swings to try go into the mid-60s (in an effort to hit the ball further or closer to pins. Up until this point most amateurs are scramblers. They're "good but unrefined". They're hoping to make it as a tour pro but most can't). Some make it others can't. Others try to improve bit by bit across the board. Either way, not easy and if you think about it it's much easier to throw yourself at it when you're younger and be completely prepared by the time you want to turn professional? Here's the other thing, even if you realise you can "make it" you come to the realisation how much you practice you need to put in order to maintain or improve totour level quality golf. My guess is that a lot of kids don't realise how much of a commitment is required to hit this particular point? At this point, the question is can you be bothered?
DO YOU PLAY GOLF TO ATTACK OR DEFEND
WHY IS AUGUSTA SO HARD
- the problem of turning pro is best illustrated by the following. Your problems compound. If you're deficient in any area you'll get into trouble very quickly especially if you're having off day with your swing and on some the courses you're dealing with. I did some analysis of several guys who turned pro and if you eliminated their major errors then they had a genuine chance at competing at the very pointy end (double bogies converted to par alone was enough to have them in the top 3 instead of struggling to make cuts. The strange thing is that there are a lot of people who you thought should made it that didn't and vice-versa. It's a strange transition between amateur and professional)
WHY IS AUGUSTA SO HARD
Pinehurst Golf Resort No.2
- most tour pros are sharper all round. Their mistakes are less significant. The following videos (watch the entire series of videos and it will make more sense with regards to what I'm saying) illustrate this and are games between Mark Crossfield (teaching pro who is a decent player in he's own right) vs Richard McEvoy/Lee Westwood/Grame McDowell (European Tour Winners & Ryder Cup Team Players), Wade Ormsby, Shubhankar Sharma, etc...

- that said, tour pros can have their problems? Lower your expectations. Golf is a game of misses. The primary difference is the disparity in error size between bad and good players. The funny thing is where they're different and where optimisations are though. A good example is the following. I know of good players who average about 115mph (and faster) with their driver swing (same average as US PGA Tour Players). However, they're much shorter then PGA Tour players. The difference with US PGA Tour players is that they simply hit the ball higher and are able to still control the ball which is why they hit it so much further and are more easily able to compete on their respective tours (the obvious cheat is to get a high lofted driver with a stiffer shaft to increase launch angle while maintaining good spin rates)

- the golf swing is the glamourous part of golf but if you master it you'll soon learn that it can become boring (Nick Faldo/Ben Hogan style golf is really boring if you think about it or have played that style before). Shifting the ball on multiple trajectories , short game, pulling off impossible shots, new shots /strategies into a whole, and "how to score" is what's most interesting

- take all the help you can get. That said, it's obvious information overload out there on the Internet now. Filtering it can be a huge problem which leads to the issue of "reproduceable flaws". - equipment makes a difference when it's suitable to your circumstances (especially for people with repeatable swings and have reasonable ball flight). However, it's also clear that psychology plays a component in things so try to figure out a way to do "blind tests" on yourself. Use cheap sources of equipment if your experimenting (secondary market such as eBay). This applies to everything. It saves you a lot of money. Note, that most cheaper gear struggles with resale value though. Equipment problems that professionals deal with are often completely different from that of those that only play semi-regularly. - it's not the same game that it used to be about a decade ago. Big headed drivers have changed things a lot. I gave up on using the same swing between driver and my other clubs and had to change a few things to make get the best compromise
Golf Driver Set Up Lesson with Mark Crossfield
- "position golf" or "Robogolf theory" is actually really difficult to achieve (for a whole bunch of reasons including physical limits, diligence, intelligence, tempo because it's difficult to incorporate "robotic thoughts" into a swing, etc...). "Robogolf theory" tells you that achieving correct positions at particular times makes up a golf swing. Over time, I've learnt that it does't really matter at long as you can achieve perfect position at impact. My guess is that some golfers figured out something that I'm feeling I'm learnt. Setting up correctly makes it more difficult to fail. If you think of the golf club as a pendulum and the body as something that wants to maintain dynamic balance (understand how a Segway device and it will make more sense) then it will make more sense. Setup weight inside of both legs/feet and then swing the golf club on any plane (this is just an explanation of thoughts) and you'll realise that the body will want to naturally maintain balance at all times. Try to apply  active force at various points. You'll realise that the points at which it's most effective are those that are taught. Namely, towards the bottom of the swing. Once you understand these things it becomes more natural
Athletic Motion Golf
The Correct Downswing Sequence For Your Golf Swing
- if you tell an amateur something they'll tend to exaggerate things. For instance, if you tell them to hit down on the ball they'll end up digging holes rather then taking divots. One funny thing for me is how de-lofting irons is used as a common means of hitting the ball further. As others have experienced it can lead to inconsistency (with or without practice). If that's the case just use equipment/shaft changes to pick up extra distance and keep the same swing. It's just easier

- do what's easiest at all times. I think very differently about short game shots then most pros do. Keeping things square as much as possible is easier for me. Changing swing via setup rather then active in swing manipulation is easier, etc...
https://www.youtube.com/user/iGolftv/videos
Robin Matthews-Williams
- driving range != golf course. I started on the driving range and then graduated to the golf course. The adjustment is a bit disorientating. You need to develop a swing where you don't have to worry about where you have to direct it. It should be line up and swing. This will work out on the golf course whether it's short of longer shots. Once you repeat often enough then you develop confidence and scoring becomes much, much easier. At a certain point it becomes a question of how deep can you go? This is when you begin to understand the mentality of better players. Bad players tend to focus on what they need to target but are distracted by other problems such as hazards. Good players don't focus in only what they need to do
- always practice to targets. Most modern practice facilities now have all sorts of targets of varying range. If not choose bits of grass or plants if you're in a field or park somewhere
- if you don't want your equipment to break/crack try to go with the larger manufacturers (Titleist, Ping, Callaway, Taylormade, etc...). They generally have a better track record and also have decent warranty/support with sane conditions in case something goes wrong (some manufacturers don't include range ball practice which is completely insanity when you think about it. If you have a genuinely high swing speed (above 110+mph) or practice a lot try going with manufacturers of drivers that are used on the long driver circuit). When using drivers I try to stick with slightly smaller heads (~400cc) because I think they're less likely to crack, more aerodynamic (I've had a few clubs crack/develop micro fissures on me including a Titleist 983K, Titleist 980F, multiple Orlimar driver heads, etc...), better to look at, etc...
- I've come across two main types of player. Those who favour "mechanical golf" or "feel golf." Mechanical theory (David Pelz) have a scientific methodology to help players with their short game. Feel players (Seve Ballesteros) have played so much and through sheer experience know what shots are possible/correct for the situation at hand. Either way, you need to practice A LOT (Obviously, you can't practice for every single shot but you can have a good idea of what is required). Learn about air and ground interaction (this includes spin). Some people prefer to roll it along the ground. I prefer to roll it along the ground only when the ground is predictable. Otherwise, I take a an more aerial route. Either way, finding a happy medium is the easiest way to better your scores
HOW TO GET MORE SPIN ON YOUR GOLF SHOTS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aatbZrXFWOo
- make use of unlimited golf/driving range offers and when times courses are quiet. Nobody is too bothered if you use the extra time to practice on course
- a golf game which requires constant and huge amounts of practice just isn't worth it. If you have to practice too much you're bound to get injuries. It's easy to identify players who are likely get get injured. Players who come down hard, stall part of their body, practice a lot, swing fast, have high ball flights are ones who are likely to suffer from injury problems at some point. You'll recognise some of the players who fall into these categories: Tiger Woods, Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, etc...

- if you stop learning and you want to get better you're in trouble. It means that's your peak
- learn to not care about aesthetics. At some point you're going to figure out that your way may work out better then what's being advised. Just stick with what you're doing
- it's very easy to get down to a single digit handicap. You just need a repeating swing and semi-decent short game. The rest is more difficult though because it's basically optimisation across the board
- a lot of small things add up to something big. By changing the balance/setup it changes your ability to attack a circuit/golf ball more confidently. It doesn't sound like much but when added up it chances everything. The same thing does into your overall golf game
- a lot of swing aides have a particular philosophy/mindset in mind. If you try a particular teaching aide that is like this it will change your swing and you could end up in a lot of trouble
DO GOLF TEACHING AIDS WORK
- let go of your ego. Some shots and swings are more about looking good then function. Take the easiest way out at all times if possible. There are lots of ways to score. Accuracy (game becomes pure putting game. Nick Faldo and Ben Hogan were good examples of this), distance (game becomes pitch and putt. Good example is Bubba Watson. He's terrible on Par-3s and Par-4s. It's only on Par-5s where he does well), anywhere into the whole (most difficult but possible by the absolute best players out there. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were both proponents of this particular form of golf at their peak. This is the best style though for players who don't have/can't get a repeating swing in order. It basically involves scrambling for birdies and eagles instead of par), pure putter (Ben Crenshaw), etc...

- basically, since every person is essentially unique golf swings are also fundamentally unique. It's the fact that some players trust, understand, know their swings better then others which allows them to play that way (with certain types of players if they try to figure out what they are actually doing they will literally get worse because they don't actually know how they swing the club). Often these guys do this through sheer talent, practice, or pure mental strength. This also means that they're less likely to "break down" under critical situations. These guys can go consistently deeper under par and are obviously more likely to win

- a lot of people say swing within yourself. At my peak (and others say the same thing) I know I can swing all out without worrying about direction and distance control since these will take care of themselves. That said, I've had the same experience as other golfers. Some swings and shot types are only suitable for a particular range of shots while others aren't. It's a game of compromises. Move as many parts as you have to and remove bits and pieces to maintain consistency wise (distance, direction, tempo, etc...)

- experiment on one thing at a time only to keep things simple (you can try multiple things but keeping track of everything will be difficult). Keep notes to allow you to learn from experiments. Note that golf is a game of compromise though. Changing one thing can often result in a significant number of other changes and that a lot of different methods can change the same thing. For instance, I can lower ball trajectory via ball position, active swing plane change, spin tilt, setup change, in swing manipulation,  velocity change, changing distance from ball, changing forearm angle in relation to ground, deliberately thinning, etc...

- In the study, published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS One, the students were divided into two groups. One group was asked to document enjoyable places they visited, while the other group was asked to perform acts of kindness such as sharing their lunch or giving their mum a hug when she felt stressed.

After four weeks, both groups reported higher levels of happiness, but the kids who had performed acts of kindness also experienced greater acceptance from their peers, such as more children wanting to work with them.

According to the authors: “Doing good for others benefits the givers, earning them not only improved well-being but also popularity”.

This is no surprise to Dana Kerford.

“If we define ‘popular’ as being ‘well liked’ and having a lot of friends, my experience as a teacher, working with tens of thousands of kids, is that these are the children who are kind,” she says.

It turns out that popular kids don’t grow up to be losers either. A 20-year study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that kindergarten children who cooperated with peers, were helpful to others, shared, played fair, resolved problems – in other words, kids that other kids want to play with – were more likely to be successful and happy later in life.

The myth that popular kids are bullies is reinforced in popular culture with stories of mean girls and bad boys. However, Kerford suggests that we need to be careful not to confuse “popular” kids with “controlling” kids.

“Some children appear popular because the kids around them follow their lead and do what they say,” says Kerford. “This is a perceived popularity, but the undercurrent is fear. These are not the kids that get invited to lots of birthday parties.”

When it comes to friendships the best advice we can give to our kids is really very simple: be kind and choose friends who are also kind.
- Australians Are The Most Price Gouged in The World
But not the fault of retailers most of the Time the insane costs of Rent and buying retail properties and the Middlemen and today lot of middlemen are the franchise companies, a major example is Jerry Harvey of Harvey Norman a Franchiser, A Landlord, a middleman.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Then a lot of online retailers work on very High-Profit margins Australian and the extremely Large Ones operating out of China. Plus with online Shopping from China, the Multi-National Freight carriers have got their claws in. when I started buying directly from China nearly 2 decades ago the freight companies were Chinese and air freight was reasonable and so was postage.

Today the only way to get good deals is Have a close Chinese friend in Australia who can help you with only shopping from the Chinese Language only online sellers. Then have family friends in your city that the Will to shop ahead example Christmas and Birthday Shopping many months ahead and same with electrical Appliances, tools. items for the car, the prices from these Chinese languages retailers is often 50 to 75% cheaper than the All language super sites. But there is one last ingredient you need is a Forwarding Agent where all your items are sent to one Address and then when all have arrived are packed and sent by ship. But the one I used now just has two Australian companies as customers. The best example of this I can give you is a Table Saw I wanted and it's not sold in WA just Qld, NSW, VIC and the Price close to $2800 without any add-ons such as a sliding table. Then the freight to WA was over $300 and an extra $100 if I did not have a Forklift or the means of lifting off a truck. I kept searching for it online and found a link on a web site and it turned out to be the Factory in China and I noticed minimum order ONE yes 1 I contacted the manufacturer and the Price was $1700 plus $100shipping & Insurance. The $100 shipping is the important part as it comes in a large Carton with a Shipping container base and the weight over 80kg. You can do the same with the USA and there are plenty of forwarding agents that give you a USA address such as this one https://www.myus.com/ and there are a lot more.
- Will the adoption of the Federal Government's encryption bill make life online safer for the average citizen and guard against the growth of child pornography and terrorism? No. On the contrary, passing this bill into law will only help those who are involved in these activities to thrive.

The government appears to be talking about a 21st century situation and thinking of 1950s paradigms when it tries to rally support for this flawed piece of legislation. On Wednesday, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton was up on the podium at the National Press Club in Canberra, advancing the same tired arguments in support of the bill that he has put forward every time he has a chance to do so.

It looks like no government minister or supporter is willing to accept one fundamental truth: there is one form of encryption that we all use. Businesses, banks, private citizens, crooks, criminals, terrorists – this is basically a level playing field as far as encryption goes.

Trying to spread the myth that cracks can be devised for some devices and then kept secret from others is a tough gig. Even the American NSA, the best-resourced spook agency in the world, which has tonnes of high-grade talent, could not guard its own secrets and found itself in glorious disarray when a group called the Shadow Brokers unleashed Windows exploits on the Web in 2017.

And it's not as if the NSA had no prior warning that secrets could leak: in 2013, a young man by the name of Edward Snowden walked out of its portals and revealed a horde of secret documents that have given the world its best insight into how this secretive agency operates.
Those exploits, especially one that bears the endearing name EternalBlue, are being used by malicious attackers around the globe even today. We saw the biggest manifestations of EternalBlue use last year in the shape of ransomware known as WannaCry and NotPetya.

And Dutton still wants people to believe that cracks created for Australian situations will remain private from the rest of the world! Minister, pull the other one.
- There’s a need, as always, to see Australia’s political leadership shortcomings in their proper context.

Associate Professor Barbara Keys, from the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne, notes a “transnational feeling that we’re in a post-truth era in which telling the truth is now less important, that truth is more malleable and is something that can be manipulated”.

She attributes this at least in part to the media, which has adopted a more combative mode and the splintering of the old model of mainstream papers and TV being trusted sources of information for the vast bulk of voters.

She sees a paradox at work: “Polarisation in particular is worse than it has been. People are tired of the way that politics is so anger-driven but can’t themselves let go of their anger.”

All the same, Dr Keys doesn’t see the foundations for a Trump-style revolution inside the Australian system.

“It’s a common element to be distrustful of politicians but there’s a level in the States that’s much deeper and more ingrained and more anti-government. Americans since Reagan have been getting the message that government is the problem and that’s not true here to the same extent, “she says.

“I think Australians, relatively speaking, have much more faith in governments’ ability to do good things. The best example we have in recent years is the NDIS. That’s important because Trump won because of this really intense suspicion of government that doesn’t quite exist in the same way here.”
- Not sure if this is a problem everywhere (I suspect it is), but, at least in my hometown of Melbourne, there are SO many inexperienced consultants farmed out to unsuspecting corporate middle managers as "agile coaches", with an expectation for them to create lasting improvement in software delivery teams and how they work with "stakeholders".

These consultants often struggle (through no fault of their own, by the way), not because they don't know their stuff (necessarily - although many have barely any true agile knowledge or exposure), but because they don't know how to completely refactor their approach when things dramatically unravel. They simply don't have enough tools in their tool-belt to deal with sudden or toxic circumstances. They have not been directly exposed to a large enough number of challenging workplace situations.

The premium you pay for the top consultants/coaches is for their ability to throw away their agenda when things don't go "according to plan", and instead completely adapt and focus on the needs of those they are serving. Indeed, these consultants will ALWAYS keep a flexible agenda for this very reason.

This skill cannot be taught. It is cultivated through the school of hard knocks - over many years of good, bad and ugly working experiences.
- Prada is not alone in courting controversy. Accusations of blackface were also levelled at Gucci this month for its "balaclava" turtleneck jumper, and last week pop star Katy Perry faced the same accusation for a pair of shoes in her collection. Gucci, which accounted for 63 per cent of its parent company Kering’s sales and 78 per cent of its operating profit in 2018, has since pledged to actively improve its cultural sensitivity. Perry pulled the offending shoes.

It all plays into a shift in fashion in recent years: brands are expected to be "woke" – a largely Millennial term for being "awake" to injustice and privilege in society, though one which is now often used sarcastically – and are decisively called out if they’re not. This is in part because informed consumers with social media accounts are holding brands accountable in ways the fashion industry has previously not experienced.
