Getting Internships/Finding Interns, Random Stuff, and More

- I've had some people contact me about internships (both recruiting and getting) so I've decided to write a post about this
- friends, family, and acquaintances are often the first point of contact for most people
- while cold calling may work I've found that has a lower success/efficiency rate when compared with targeted marketing. Part of the time I feel as though you may be better off writing custom software and tools to find what you want on the Internet
- there are regionally based programs as well as specific skill area related programs

- charity and voluntary work is often a good way to get work experience. The obvious irony is that due to the modern litigative world more charities are putting up barriers to entry. This means that background checks are becoming more common and needed
- job advertisement boards (online and offline). This includes public areas such as in Universities, supermarkets, etc...
- joint industry/education/training programs. Good examples of this are often joint government/industry programs where there are skills shortages such as in the military industrial complex and in trades
http://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2019/08/getting-free-education-and-training.html
- there are organisations that specialise in getting interns, networking with companies, and providing final link up between them

https://sites.google.com/view/practicum-digital/welcome
- get yourself out there. As I said earlier general random networking often turns up many options. You never know who you'll meet up with in life but your chances of finding a successful matchup will obviously increase if you meet up at places where likely clients are likely to be (whether that is online or offline). It's easier/better to have to reject work then to have to try and find it

https://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2019/08/finding-fundinginvestment-making-money.html
- sometimes you can the work contract/outsource to a recruitment company or marketing company
- sound obvious but search online. I didn't realise a huge number of well known organisation have virtual internship programs (this is especially pertinent given the COVID-19 era and slowing global economic growth)

- as a side note it's a good way of gaining information and competitive intelligence on how certain companies operate and getting free training as well?
- I've worked with organisations trying to get free labour via regularly churning of interns (and employees as well!). Note that internships are not supposed to be a way to get free labour though and there are often local laws to prevent exploitation of young students and professionals. It's supposed to be a way to get an idea of what life is going to be like in the workforce at a particular company or in a particular industry
intern law
When is unpaid internship or work experience okay?
Unpaid work experience or internships can be okay if:
they're a student or vocational placement, or
there's no employment relationship.
For more information about different types of lawful unpaid work, see our Unpaid work fact sheet.
Unlike unpaid work, people in employment relationships are employees of a business and entitled to:
a minimum wage
the National Employment Standards
the terms of any applicable award or registered agreement.
To work out if a person is an employee or not depends on a number of things. One of the most important is whether the arrangement involves creating an employment contract.
A person and a business can make an employment contract in writing or verbally. However, they can also make a contract when the person does activities for the business that look like work. This even includes arrangements when both the person and the business:
say it's not employment, or
agree the business won't pay the person for their work.
...
Indicators of an employment relationship
It's important to understand what an employment relationship looks like and when one exists. Things to look at include:
what was agreed to?
what was the reason for the arrangement?
how long was the arrangement?
how important was the work to the business?
what work is the person doing?
who's getting the benefit?

- you need to realise that the job/life process is not fair. What you put in isn't necessarily what you're going to get out. Both organisations and individuals will attempt to protect their reputations even if there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that they may be completely wrong? You need to either learn to live with that, work your way around it, fight it, etc... I deal with this problem partly by maintaining a public record of much of my work. That makes it more difficult for anyone to spin/lie their way out of their situation. That said, I (like many others) have found that people believe what they want to believe not necessarily what's right or is the truth?

Random Quotes:
- Which comedians mentored you along the way? There's not a lot of that in the field. Comedians are not generous by nature because it's a very, very tenuous existence. But I try to do that because I've been fortunate that I came into this life with security. And I give my parents credit for that because they were secure people. I did have a funny conversation with Rodney Dangerfield one time at a club. I asked him all these questions and he went, "You know what? You'll figure it out." He was right.

- "Understanding positive ways in which cats and humans interact can enhance public understanding of cats, improve feline welfare, and tell us more about the socio-cognitive abilities of this understudied species," said Dr. Tasmin Humphrey, who co-led the research with McComb. The findings are particularly useful for veterinarians and rescuers to better assess feline welfare and emotions.
Paradoxically, Humphrey theorises that cats may have adopted the habit more regularly after noticing that humans were the ones who felt more relaxed after a cat's slow blink.
"In terms of why cats behave in this way, it could be argued that cats developed the slow blink behaviours because humans perceived slow blinking as positive," she explained. "Cats may have learned that humans reward them for responding to slow blinking."
Humphrey continued, "It is also possible that slow blinking in cats began as a way to interrupt an unbroken stare, which is potentially threatening in social interaction."
McComb suggests all cat lovers make use of their discovery.
"It is something you can try yourself with your own cat at home, or with cats you meet in the street. It's a great way of enhancing the bond you have with cats," she said.

- Host to 31 U.S. military bases, Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture, is no stranger to the risks of bearing the burden of the U.S.-Japan alliance. In 1959, the U.S. military accidentally shot a nuclear rocket into a local harbor; six years later, it lost a hydrogen bomb in nearby seas; then in 1969, a leak of nerve agent on the island so shocked the world that President Richard Nixon was forced to renounce his nation's first-use policy on chemical weapons.
...
Opinion polls generally show the majority of Okinawans support the U.S.-Japan alliance – but they wish their prefecture wasn't burdened with 70 percent of the U.S. military presence in Japan. They also wish SOFA would be overhauled; 39 of Japan's 47 prefectural governors agree that SOFA needs to be rewritten. At the time it was penned 60 years ago, nobody realized how harmful military operations could be to the environment, but in the ensuing decades, it has become clear that concentrating the U.S. military presence on Okinawa concentrates contamination there, too. If the U.S. wants to maintain Okinawan support for the U.S.-Japan alliance then it needs to understand that protecting human health and the environment is inseparable from its wider mission of protecting Japan.

- Amazon has been charged by the European commission with using the sales data of independent retailers selling through its site to illegally gain an advantage in the European market place.
Margrethe Vestager, the commission's vice-president, said the commission's preliminary conclusion was that Amazon used "big data" to illegally distort competition in France and Germany, the biggest online retail markets in Europe.
Brussels has also decided to open a second investigation into Amazon's e-commerce business practices over concerns that the Seattle-based company set rules on its platform to benefit its own offers and those independent retailers using its logistics and delivery services.
Last month, Amazon announced a third quarter income for 2020 of $6.3bn, triple that of the previous year, as an increasing number of shoppers turn to online sales amid the pandemic.
Vestager told a press conference in Brussels that the commission did not have an issue with the size of the company but only with its business practices which appeared to illegally stymy the growth of its competitors.
"We all know how important e-commerce is today and the current crisis has demonstrated even further that buying online is now commonplace for many, many people, people shop online more frequently and for an increasing variety of products," Vestager said. "The value of online sales in Europe has been growing steadily. And it has almost doubled in the last five years, reaching almost €720bn this year, up from more than €370bn in 2015.
"And Amazon is at the centre of this market development. More than 70% of consumers in France, and more than 80% of consumers in Germany, that made online purchases bought something from Amazon in the last 12 months. We do not take issue with the success of Amazon or its size. Our concern is very specific business contacts which appears to distort genuine competition."

Use Agency Marketplaces like Credo
https://agencyanalytics.com/blog/get-more-clients
- friends, family, and acquiantences are often the first point of contact for most people
- based on experience advertising has limited impact but compounds when/if you hit a particular "sweet spot" (which I think is the reason why some companies spend so much on market research). The main issue seems to be drawing in a big enough audience in the first place so that you can market to them
- as I said earlier general random networking often turns up many options. You never know who you'll meet up with in life but your chances of finding a successful matchup will obviously increase if you meet up at places where likely clients are likely to be (whether that is online or offline)
https://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2019/08/finding-fundinginvestment-making-money.html

- the age of mass data collection/Big Data has changed things a lot for some big companies out there (such as the FAANG group). This collection of data has effectively turned the entire world into a "Hedge Fund" on many different levels. You can also do the same if you know where and how find the data in question. Obviously, the cost/benefit of aquisition of data has to be worthwhile so stick to "intelligent data mining" rather then just Big Data mining if your resources are limited

In December 2019, the Federal Government tasked the ACCC with monitoring digital platform services and their impacts on competition and consumers for five years, with reports to be issued every six months. The first interim report was made public on Friday.
The interim report found that the online activity of Australians was being extensively tracked with many businesses, including those that provide private online messaging, social media and search, able to obtain user data because they were providing advertising and other services to website and mobile apps.
"The ACCC's website analysis found Google and Facebook had the largest presence in online tracking, with Google and Facebook's third party scripts present on over 80% and 40% respectively of 1000 popular websites in Australia. Amazon and Microsoft tracking were present on nearly 30% and almost 20% of websites respectively," the report said.
The ACCC also commissioned research from AppCensus, a company that studies online privacy and data tracking, which found that "platforms such as Google and Facebook and advertising services providers have the potential to receive a range of user information from apps because of the prevalence of their software development kits within apps".
"AppCensus observed that Google's SDKs were identified in 92% of all apps analysed and Facebook's SDKs in 61% of apps."
And in another finding, AppCensus found that about two-thirds of the apps it looked at could transmit user information to Facebook – even if those users had no Facebook accounts.
Many platforms and advertising services were being sent data from apps during testing, the company found. "The research showed that Facebook received data from approximately 40% of all apps analysed. Other platforms such as Google, Twitter and Amazon were observed to be receiving user data from about 10%, 8% and 4% of the apps respectively."
The type of information being transmitted included identifiers for user advertising and location information. Plus, sensitive information like audio recordings, photos and videos and also health data were sent.

- poach them by giving changers a discount, bonus, etc...
- competitive tenders, advertising boards, job advertisements, etc... often provide you with clues as to what a businesses may be in need of
- government tenders. Most countries have websites where you can bid. Whether or not you have a genuine chance is obviously up in the air
government tenders
- ask other firms for clients that they want to share/offload (this is mainly pertinent for firms who have clients that aren't quite suitable for their business)
- develop a presence in the world. This may include social media, podcasting, traditional media such as television/radio, etc... This ensures that if someone ever needs something that your firm needs they'll think of you first. It's also the reason why some companies spend so much time on product placement and getting their brand name out there and in such high regularity. As an example of this, I get lots of people who try to network for business opportunities via various social media outlets in spite of much of it not being super targeted towards business. My guess is that you'll need to maintain a regular and relatively interesting presence for this to work though

- while cold calling may work I've found that has a lower success/efficiency rate when compared with targeted marketing
- network breaches/data dumps. Sometimes these are legitimate other times not

- sounds obvious but consider hiring/poaching Business Development Managers (BDM) and marketing people with knowledge of the area in question
- try to understand the system and how how other companies of similar ilk find clients and leverage this
- spread the load. For instance, use a diverse set of marketing channels such as sales partners, independent contractors, internal staff, etc...
- referral programs
- this should sound obvious but don't waste time listening to junk. Do what makes sense and works. Target the statistically significant and go where the data tells you
- prey on well known targets
- be smart. Over time, I've come to realise that most successful companies manage their data and finances best by being smart and leveraging opportunities that are afforded to them and not being simply the most ruthless. If you think of everything as an possible opportunity (rather then just risk) you may be surprised at what and where you can make gains and stop losses
- giveaways, competitions, etc...
- reviews and goofups of competitor products. Advertising/marketing a product for a company that has to deal with regular goofups of a competitor's product is obviously an opportunity
- making a good product or service sounds obvious but doesn't feel that way when you talk to some business owners who just want to push their product or service no matter how bad or uncompetitive it may be
- I've found that followers/users of a competitor's social media/product are much more inclined to look at similar alternatives
- know where/when you can push a client into using a product/service and when/where you can't and must adapt to their needs

- That sounds like a joke too, but is in fact an acute observation. As Einstein was the first to realise, the faster we move, the slower time passes for us. If we could make a journey at extremely high speed, we would find on our return that our contemporaries were much older than us. The closer we get to the speed of light, the greater the effect would be. If we could travel at the very speed of light, time for us would stop. It would stop flowing altogether. But light obviously moves at, well, the speed of light – so, for light, time never passes at all. In this sense, light "won't get bored".

- Have you ever been in more than one place at the same time? If you're much bigger than an atom, the answer will be no.
But atoms and particles are governed by the rules of quantum mechanics, in which several different possible situations can coexist at once.
Quantum systems are ruled by what's called a "wave function": a mathematical object that describes the probabilities of these different possible situations.
And these different possibilities can coexist in the wave function as what is called a "superposition" of different states. For example, a particle existing in several different places at once is what we call "spatial superposition".
It's only when a measurement is carried out that the wave function "collapses" and the system ends up in one definite state.
Generally, quantum mechanics applies to the tiny world of atoms and particles. The jury is still out on what it means for large-scale objects.

- Regenerative agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming systems. It focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity,[1] improving the water cycle,[2] enhancing ecosystem services, supporting biosequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil. Practices include recycling as much farm waste as possible and adding composted material from sources outside the farm.[3][4][5][6]
Regenerative agriculture on small farms and gardens is often based on philosophies like permaculture, agroecology, agroforestry, restoration ecology, keyline design, and holistic management. Large farms tend to be less philosophy driven and often use "no-till" and/or "reduced till" practices.
On a regenerative farm, yield should increase over time. As the topsoil deepens, production may increase and fewer external compost inputs are required. Actual output is dependent on the nutritional value of the composting materials and the structure and content of the soil.[7]

- ARE NZ ELECTIONS LIKE AUSTRALIAN ELECTIONS?
Yes and no. Both countries have representative democracies derived from the British "Westminster" system with the monarch as head of state represented by a Governor-General and with the PM being picked from the largest party.
How people vote in New Zealand is different though.
For a start, New Zealand's parliament only has one chamber, the Reps, so there are no Senators to vote in.
But despite this, Kiwis still get two votes as part of its mixed member proportional voting system. The first ballot is for an individual to be the local MP. That's decided by the "first past the post" system. Simply put, if candidate A gets just one more vote than any other candidate, they're elected.
Kiwis also get to vote separately for a party. These "party" seats are then divvied up proportionally based on how many votes each party gets. Any party that gets more than 5 per cent of the national vote usually gets at least one seat. This vote often means smaller parties can gain MPs.
There are also seven Maori electorates reserved only for people of Maori descent. You can vote in a Maori electorate or general electorate – but not both.

- "Politicians, Priests, and psychiatrists often face the same problem: how to find the most rapid and permanent means of changing a man's belief…The problem of the doctor and his nervously ill patient, and that of the religious leader who sets out to gain and hold new converts, has now become the problem of whole groups of nations, who wish not only to confirm certain political beliefs within their boundaries, but to proselytize the outside world."

- The church's updated estimated liability comes after changes to the law in Tasmania earlier this year which have made it easier for survivors of institutional child sex abuse to have their previous settlements cast aside, paving the way for them to pursue civil litigation.
Anglican clergy sex abuse survivor Steve Fisher, chief executive of Beyond Abuse, said these amendments to existing legislation explained the church's new redress liability estimate.
"People who had already received a pittance were able to go to court and get the deed of release that they signed overturned," he said.
"There's nowhere to hide anymore. [Religious institutions] can't hide behind the law, they can't say that their priests were independent contractors, therefore they have no liability."

- The contest between the U.S. and China has dominated much of global attention over the last few years. Two years ago, the two countries entered a damaging trade war that resulted in elevated tariffs being slapped on each other's products worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
Tensions between the two spilled into the technology space, with the U.S. accusing Huawei — and later TikTok, a video-sharing app owned by ByteDance — for threatening American national security. Washington has tried to pressure its allies to ban Huawei from their countries' 5G networks.
Wang called such moves by the U.S. a "textbook example of bullying" and a violation of "international rules of fair trade." In contrast, he stressed that China is a "firm defender" of the international system.

- But while preaching nonzero-sum thinking, those winners have also taken a ruthlessly zero-sum approach to rewriting the rules of the economy to their own benefit. Corporations and their wealthy leaders have lobbied extensively, and successfully, to reduce their tax burdens, weaken the social safety net, undermine the power of their workers and increase their influence in the policymaking process. The net result has been a massive transfer of wealth and power from the poor and the middle class to those at the top.
When the rich shape a country's institutions in their own image and to their own benefit, it's little wonder that trust in those institutions declines, as it has in the United States. That lack of trust creates a vacuum for authoritarian and nativist regimes to take root, according to the United Nations. "The central message of populist movements has historically been that the common people are being exploited by a privileged elite, and that radical institutional change is required to avoid such exploitation," according to the report.
But research shows the history of populist regimes since 1990 has primarily been one of corruption, self-dealing, worsening inequality and political violence.
Policymakers have known how to avoid this dire outcome for decades, according to the U.N. report. Leveling the playing field would involve strengthening the minimum wage, reinforcing the social safety net and ensuring universal access to health care in places that currently lack it. It's really that simple, and wealthy countries like the United States have plenty of economic capacity and technical know-how to pull it off.
But putting those policies in place would require redistributing a lot of wealth downward, via a mechanism such as a wealth tax or some other form of increased taxation on the wealthy. And the individuals and institutions currently hoarding the country's riches have rightly identified those policies as a threat to their interests.

- "I think what benefits us now is when we say no, they don't keep coming banging at my doors," she said.
"They know now from years of experience when I say no, I mean bloody, 'No, it's over. So go do your bargaining with someone else.'"
She used to find the experience of Parliament intimidating, given the university education of many parliamentarians.
"Now I think, 'You should be intimidated by me.' [They have] got no life experience," she said.
What people who find themselves in Parliament almost unexpectedly will always tell you is about how much you learn — and in most cases, how much it opens their eyes to the complexities of life.
"It's learning over time, but it's also the different people that you meet out there, that's — I really liked that bit," she said.
