Ender 3v2 and Ender 3vSE 3D Printer Maintenance, Klipper Firmware Upgrade, and More

Ender 3v2 and Ender 3vSE 3D Printer Maintenance:
- after using a 3D printer for a few months now it's started to play up. The limit sensor wasn't holding positiion and I found out it was broken so had to make a new one to replace it

https://printables.com/model/467570-ender-3-v2-z-end-stop-switch-mount-v22
- it was skewing halfway through prints due some sort of slippage which was fixed by tightening belt bolts. There was some lifting on one side during prints so I had to tighten screws beneath print bed

- the original setup didn't have automatic bed levelling but it did come with a BL touch which wasn't properly setup or installed. I printed out a new mount to set it up

- I decided to setup Octoprint on a Raspberry Pi which allows me to print wirelessly to the device without having to shuffle SD cards anymore. To setup Octoprint you need to instlal and run rpm-imager utility
https://octoprint.org/download/
To install on Raspberry Pi OS, type
sudo apt install rpi-imager
into a terminal window
https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/
rpm-imager
https://community.octoprint.org/t/known-printer-profiles-for-octoprint/3032
- to connect Raspberry Pi to the Ender 3v2 you need to disable pin1/5V via paper/tape over pin1 on the USB A port, then connect via USB and turn on 3D printer power as well as that of the Raspberry Pi

- go to IP address of the Raspberry Pi via web browser (use nmap C class network address/24 to find the relevant IP address)
- install relevant plugins, slice and export to g-code whatever it is that you want and then print it out

- if you forgot password to OctoPrint it's actually easier/faster to reinstall then to go through the process of trying to hack your way back in based on what I've seen
how to do ssh password reset octoprint from web interface
- a belt snapped so I had to replace it. Not that hard luckily and a compatible belt was cheap/on clearance. It was too long and the only way to save the situation was by jamming a icecream stick where it was supposed to be inserted at one end

- documentation is very confusing as it tells a different story for depending on who you hear it from. Some say you should see a black screen once you install upgraded firmware. Others say you should see Creality on the screen. In my situation it was the latter. Once you lose access to your screen the only way to manage your 3D printer is via OctoPrint or an app you install on your smartphone unless you decide to mod your 3D printer screen or your Raspbery Pi

- I've actually thought about buying a new 3D printer but have been waiting for a good deal. I finally found a deal for non-working/in pieces Ender 3v2 with an Ender 3v3 SE for $150 (basically, the same price as a single used Ender 3v3SE most of the time). I had to re-assemble and repair the Ender 3v2 as it was just a just a pile of parts. Reinstall firmware, reassmble screen, install new Y-Axis belt and recalibrate screws. The Ender 3v3 SE worked prefectly fine

- I normally use Prusaslicer but decided to test out OrcaSlicer to see what it was like. Not much difference to be honest since there are templates for various 3D printers you may use. Thereafter, it's a case of hitting slice, and export G-Code and then sending it to the 3D printer for it to print out

- to use CR-Touch or BL-Touch with direct drive you can either change your slicer settings or update your firmware. I decided to try both to see what it was like. I tried looking around for official Creality firmware that would work with both direct drive as well as CR-Touch but couldn't find all the features that I required. In the end I found this which seems to have been built by Miguel Risco-Castillo (MRiscoC) an FPGA system architect with experience in embedded and microcontroller devices in his spare time:

ender 3 v2 direct drive firmware changes required
Transitioning your Ender 3 V2 to a direct drive system usually does not require flashing new firmware. The required actions are adjusting the Extruder steps per millimeter (E-steps) and modifying your slicer’s retraction settings.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ender3/comments/1aqz0z1/do_you_need_to_do_anything_to_the_firmware_to/
Actionable Firmware & Setting ChangesInstead of recompiling or updating your base firmware, you just need to update the printer's EEPROM and slicer settings:Calibrate E-Steps: Direct drive extruders require a different amount of filament to be fed. On your Ender 3 V2 display, go to Control > Motion > Steps/mm and adjust your Extruder Steps. If you are using a standard Creality direct drive kit, a common starting point is around 400 - 425 steps/mm, but you should calibrate this manually for accuracy.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ender3/comments/11493n6/adjustment_suggestions/
Store Settings: Once you input the new E-steps, navigate to Control > Store Settings to save them to the EEPROM.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxBGBjLC2rk&t=181
Update Slicer Retraction: In your slicer (e.g., Cura or PrusaSlicer), drastically reduce your retraction settings to prevent nozzle jamming. Change your Retraction Distance to 0.8 mm - 1.2 mm and your Retraction Speed to 30 mm/s - 40 mm/s.

Random Quotes:
- The blood–brain barrier (BBB) prevents the brain uptake of most pharmaceuticals. This property arises from the epithelial-like tight junctions within the brain capillary endothelium. The BBB is anatomically and functionally distinct from the blood–cerebrospinal fluid barrier at the choroid plexus. Certain small molecule drugs may cross the BBB via lipid-mediated free diffusion, providing the drug has a molecular weight <400 Da and forms <8 hydrogen bonds. These chemical properties are lacking in the majority of small molecule drugs, and all large molecule drugs. Nevertheless, drugs can be reengineered for BBB transport, based on the knowledge of the endogenous transport systems within the BBB. Small molecule drugs can be synthesized that access carrier-mediated transport (CMT) systems within the BBB. Large molecule drugs can be reengineered with molecular Trojan horse delivery systems to access receptor-mediated transport (RMT) systems within the BBB. Peptide and antisense radiopharmaceuticals are made brain-penetrating with the combined use of RMT-based delivery systems and avidin–biotin technology. Knowledge on the endogenous CMT and RMT systems expressed at the BBB enable new solutions to the problem of BBB drug transport.

- The treatment of chronic illnesses commonly includes the long-term use of pharmacotherapy. Although these medications are effective in combating disease, their full benefits are often not realized because approximately 50% of patients do not take their medications as prescribed. Factors contributing to poor medication adherence are myriad and include those that are related to patients (eg, suboptimal health literacy and lack of involvement in the treatment decision–making process), those that are related to physicians (eg, prescription of complex drug regimens, communication barriers, ineffective communication of information about adverse effects, and provision of care by multiple physicians), and those that are related to health care systems (eg, office visit time limitations, limited access to care, and lack of health information technology). Because barriers to medication adherence are complex and varied, solutions to improve adherence must be multifactorial. To assess general aspects of medication adherence using cardiovascular disease as an example, a MEDLINE-based literature search (January 1, 1990, through March 31, 2010) was conducted using the following search terms: cardiovascular disease, health literacy, medication adherence, and pharmacotherapy. Manual sorting of the 405 retrieved articles to exclude those that did not address cardiovascular disease, medication adherence, or health literacy in the abstract yielded 127 articles for review. Additional references were obtained from citations within the retrieved articles. This review surveys the findings of the identified articles and presents various strategies and resources for improving medication adherence.
Medication Adherence: WHO Cares?
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3068890/
- According to the World Health Organization, medication adherence can have a more direct impact on patient outcomes than the specific treatment itself.1 Medication adherence can affect quality and length of life, health outcomes, and overall healthcare costs.2,3 Nonadherence can account for up to 50% of treatment failures, around 125,000 deaths, and up to 25% of hospitalizations each year in the United States.
Typically, adherence rates of 80% or more are needed for optimal therapeutic efficacy. However, it is estimated that adherence to chronic medications is around 50%.3 Adherence rates can go down as time passes after the initial prescription is written, or as barriers emerge or multiply.
The responsibility of medication adherence falls on patients and the ambulatory healthcare team. There is less consideration given to adherence in the hospital setting due to the ability to access, dispense, and administer medications on schedule while patients are hospitalized; however, medication adherence can be emphasized during transitions of care. Unfortunately, services to improve adherence are generally not reimbursed, so even in the outpatient setting, little incentive exists to improve this fundamental aspect of care. On the upside, quality-of-care models are evolving because of the recognized sequelae resulting from medication nonadherence.4-7 Approximately $100 to $300 billion in healthcare costs could be curtailed annually by addressing medication adherence.8

- The team looked at the electronic health records of nearly five million VA patients, all of whom had used VA health care in fiscal year 2006 (from October 1, 2005 through September 30, 2006). They found that slightly more than 700,000 of those patients had a diagnosis of depression. In fiscal year 2007 (October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007), just over 167,000 (3.38 percent) of these patients died.
The average age at death for patients with a diagnosis of depression was 71.0 years; those without such a diagnosis were 75.9 years old at the time of their deaths. By dividing the patient population into eight age groups, and using life expectancy tables developed by the Centers for Disease Control, they were able to calculate the years of potential life left those who had died could normally have anticipated.
The formula they used was to take the midpoint of each age group, add the number of years the CDC table estimated people of that age should live, and then subtract the actual age at death for Veterans in that group who had died in fiscal year 2007. This method allowed them to evaluate the impact of early death on an entire population, not just on those who died younger than a specified endpoint age, such as 65. They found that depressed patients who died in fiscal year 2007 lost, on average, 13.4 years of productive life—while non-depressed patients lost only 10.9 such years.
In fact, depression was associated with significantly earlier ages at death and more years of productive life lost for all of the 13 causes of death that were examined in the study. These included accidents, cerebrovascular issues, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, homicide, influenza and pneumonia, liver disease, malignant neoplasms (cancer), nephritis (kidney disease), respiratory disease, septicemia (blood infection), and suicide. All other causes of death were included in a 14th category—and here, too, death came earlier for depressed patients.
"These findings highlight the importance of depression as a potential contributor to early mortality," says Zivin. "Since depression is treatable, such treatment could have a measurable impact on the risk of early death."
The paper also suggests that improvements in the quality of mental health care depressed patients receive could reduce mortality in those groups, and that better overall management of their care could also reduce their risk of early death.

- Allow me to interject some inconvenient truths here by pointing out that this backward system of forgiveness only protects abusers who are very often remorseless and unapologetic for their dirty deeds.
Narcissists, for example, are notorious for continuing their abuse long after a victim has escaped, such as stalking their ex, launching smear campaigns, and using any children they share as tools to further punish and torment.
And we’re supposed to forgive these nasty little fuckers?
The problem is that we’ve narrowed down the definition of forgiveness to such a point where there is no wiggle room. Thus, when a person is unable to “forgive” according to these rules, there is a further burden of failure, guilt, and self-blame that an abuse victim carries.
In addition, all the responsibility is placed on the victim of the abuse instead of the abuser themselves. We are told to focus on forgiving our abuser because otherwise, we will end up bitter and resentful, and ultimately still a prisoner to the past. Make no mistake about it, folks. This is gaslighting at its finest. And the last thing a person on the healing journey after abuse needs is additional abuse.
https://medium.com/publishous/do-you-need-to-forgive-your-abuser-to-heal-faf20303be87
- Forgiving abuse filled me with questions. Is it right to “forgive and forget” in the face of cyclical, abusive sin? It’s not punitive, surely, to hold an abuser accountable. But was it a lack of grace? And if I chose to “forgive” and not press it further, would I put the safety of others at risk?
My questions confirmed for me how complicated forgiveness really is – especially in the case of abuse.
But they’re questions that every Christian should be asking. Today, we are facing the fallout of abuse scandals across the church, and a common thread has been the lopsided teaching of forgiveness. Forgiveness that’s equated to “forgiving and forgetting”, instead of hashing out the issues that caused the abuse. Forgiveness that’s become as a simplification and as a way of keeping the peace.
The news is full of stories where Christians have used forgiveness to pressure children to stay with their abusive parents. Wives have been told to forgive and return to their violent husbands. Sexual predators have moved onto new victims because “we’ve all fallen short of God’s glory”. And we silence victims – all out of “Christian forgiveness”.
It may seem comforting and holy to tell a person who’s hurting that they “just need to forgive”. But in a world of child abuse scandals, domestic violence and #metoo, do Christians really get what it means when they ask victims to forgive

A Queensland mother who lost her 13-year-old daughter to suicide says it was a "terrible accident" but not linked to mental illness
Almost half of all suicide deaths in Queensland between 2013 and 2015 occurred in people with no history of mental illness
Experts say love, hormones and life events can contribute to suicide but building resilience in children can help reduce risk

- The Montessori method of education was developed by Italian physician Maria Montessori. Emphasizing independence, it views children as naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a sufficiently supportive and well-prepared learning environment. It discourages some conventional measures of achievement, such as grades and tests. Montessori developed her theories in the early 1900s through scientific experimentation with her students; the method has since been used in many parts of the world, in public and private schools alike.[2][3]
A range of practices exist under the name "Montessori", which is not trademarked in the US. Popular elements include mixed-age classrooms, student freedom (including their choices of activity), long blocks of uninterrupted work time, and specially trained teachers. Scientific studies regarding the Montessori method are mostly positive, with a 2017 review stating that "broad evidence" exists for its efficacy. Some studies suggest that methods closer to Montessori's original approach, rather than modernized methods, are better for students.

A team of scientists from Osaka University, The University of Queensland, and the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Engineering used tiny nanodiamonds coated with a heat-releasing polymer to probe the thermal properties of cells. When irradiated with light from a laser, the sensors acted both as heaters and thermometers, allowing the thermal conductivity of the interior of a cell to be calculated. This work may lead to a new set of heat-based treatments for killing bacteria or cancer cells.

- “[The discovery] never happened before and it probably won’t happen again,” she said. “We know that in 11th-century Spain, Jews and Muslims and Christians were working alongside each other, especially in the scientific media, and that many Jewish scientists were sponsored and patronised by Muslim rulers with no concern for their religion.

🚨Just In : China is reportedly exploring a new path where some PhD students can earn their doctorate by creating a practical product instead of writing a long traditional thesis.
The idea focuses on real world problem solving and innovation as a valid academic contribution. It highlights a shift in thinking where applied research is given more importance alongside theoretical work.
In certain programs, candidates may present working prototypes, technological solutions, or commercially useful innovations to demonstrate their research impact. Supporters believe this can help connect universities with industry needs and speed up the use of new ideas in real life. At the same time, experts still emphasize that deep theoretical study remains essential, so this is being seen as an additional option rather than a full replacement for traditional dissertations. The move reflects a broader effort to make higher education more practical and innovation driven.

- a lot of tuning seems to be involved for some 3d printers and 3d printing in general? Maybe because it's still a relatively new field? Most of the time when you ask people say you need a clean and level bed, regularly lubricate rails, clean nozzle, screw in rails properly, ensure correct temperatures are being reached at the extrusion point and bed, etc... Lots of issues with printing still such as underextrusion and overextrusion, layering issues, glitches which cause prints to simply fail for no apparent reason, etc...

losing your Z-offset is a long standing problem with a trivial fix which is maddening that creatily has not fixed.
Its due to loose springs, and the loose springs are due to the position of the Z-end stop, and the Z-endstop position is due to the nub of plastic used for positioning
Snip off the nub.
Tighten down the rear left corner and move the nozzle over the screw in that corner.
through trial and error, move the position of the Z-stop up and down until you see about 1mm of gap between the nozzle and bed when you home Z.
Now level the bed again and your issues will be gone or at least vastly improved

- some local libraries have free access but they're booked out months in advance for both training as well as for use so it's pointless
- there is a lot of information out there now but it's an industry still in its infancy. Average price is for a personal 3D printer ~$100-200 AUD on the used/secondary market and ~$300-500 AUD on the new market. Filament costs start at ~$5-20 AUD in the secondary market and ~$30-50 AUD on the new market. Different printers have different pros and cons. Higher printing speed reduces quality. There are some well known good and bad versions. Some are proprietary technologies but others are based on more open designs. There are some options/modified printers that allow for greater speed, quality, reduced vibration, etc... My targets are basically cheapish, parts readily available, repairable, open architecture, etc...

The printer is really good for the money, can be heavily moded and upgraded and can match the print quality of more expensive printers but all this comes with a few costs and by that I mean financial, physical and mental. After 4 years of modding my ender 3 I gave it away and moved to other printers which are far superior but not also more expensive.
If you're a beginner and would want to know why this stranger on reddit says you shouldn't get one here are a few of the problems you will have to deal with when getting one:
- retraction issues with the ptfe tube which just flexes instead of retracting
- filament eats through the tension arm on the bowden extruder
- tension arm from the bowden extruder breaks
- PTFE tube does a quarter of a turn in the coupling which will chew the tube and break it or give it room for a back and forth movement which results in retraction problems and a very annoying clicking sound
- PTFE tube doesn't come flush cut at the side with the hot end resulting in oozing
- the screws in the heatblock aren't aligned with the heatbreak and you will end up with a tilted heatblock and a gap for ooze to come out
- aluminium bed is curved
- z gantry hard to align and results in a tilted hot end
- no belt tensioner(on v1)
- bed springs too loose
- motherboard fan starts with the part cooling fan(on v1)
- poor quality v rollers which don't sit straight on the vslot profile and grind away in a fine dust and results in an untight gantry on the vslot aluminum profile
- eprom resets if printer is left unused for some time.
- silicate glass bed has bed adhesion problems(v1 came also with a fiber glass board with a PC build surface which was great)
- loud steppers (on v1)
- heavy X gantry with only one stepper on Z
The good thing is that all these can be fixed but you need time, skill and willingness to learn from hours of watching youtube videos or asking on threads on Reddit. Every problem this printer has is already known and a fix is documented somewhere.
As a conclusion, what I want to say is that I feel that this printer is something not suitable for beginners or people that don't have the skills for debugging and tinkering to get an ender 3 to a point where you can just hit print 100 times and not have to retune it.
Hoping for some creative arguments but I'm aware I'll drag a lot of hate from the creality fan base.

- there are people who provide 3D printing services which means that you can just outsource the job to someone else but the services isn't really widely known. The closest place I had to me offering this service said it would cost ~$50-100 to print something roughly the size of my hand
- most reliable brands are Prusa and Bambulab 3d printers. Expensive but easier to use, work and realiable which means that you can print rather then having to deal with maintenance and setup issues. Prusa open source while Bambulab is less serviceable. Bambulab printers faster due to auto-stablisation/Input Shaping feature though this function is coming to other. 3D model is created in software then shifted to slicer/gcode which is then used to print (conceptually similar to Calculus and infinitesimals)

- if you didn't already know there are many different types of filament/base material. They operate at different size/diameter, temperature, colours, etc... and have different strengths are weaknesses. For instance, some of them are cheaper and lightweight and better for prototyping while others are stronger and harder and more suited for long term applications. Most modern 3d printers accept a wide range of filament types but what is strange issue for me is the advent of proprietary filaments. There has been some work to modify such printers to accept other formats though

3D printing filaments are the materials used in Fused Deposition Modeling
(FDM) 3D printers to create objects. Here is a list of common 3D printing
  filaments and their uses:
    1. PLA (Polylactic Acid): A biodegradable, plant-based filament that is
easy to print and produces high-quality, detailed prints. It is
commonly used for creating toys, figurines, and other objects that do
       not require high heat resistance.
    2. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): A tough, impact-resistant
filament that is commonly used for creating functional parts, such as
phone cases and automotive parts. ABS can be more challenging to print
than PLA, but it is stronger and more durable.
    3. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): A lightweight, transparent filament
that is food-safe and commonly used for creating water bottles and
       food containers.
    4. Nylon: A strong, flexible filament that is commonly used for creating
gears, bushings, and other mechanical parts that require high strength
       and flexibility.
    5. TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane): A flexible, rubber-like filament
that is commonly used for creating phone cases, toys, and other
objects that require flexibility and elasticity.
    6. PETG (Glycol-modified PET): A durable, flexible filament that is
similar to PET, but with improved impact resistance and flexibility.
It is commonly used for creating food containers and consumer
       products.
    7. PP (Polypropylene): A strong, lightweight filament that is commonly
used for creating household items, such as storage containers and
       household goods.
    8. PC (Polycarbonate): A strong, heat-resistant filament that is commonly
used for creating consumer electronics, such as laptop cases and
       gaming console parts.
    9. PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol): A water-soluble filament that is used as a
support material for complex prints. Once the print is complete, the
PVA support material can be dissolved in water, leaving only the
       desired object.

Filament
The Da Vinci Nano uses proprietary filament controlled by electronic tags. This is definitely a contentious feature. It leads to consistent prints and of course incremental revenue for XYZprinting.
We don't have a problem with paying a little extra for the filament. For beginners, it's more important to have ease of use than save a few pennies. The things we tend to print in schools and clubs are small and we don't use huge amounts of filament.
But, we do feel restricted by the range of colours available. XYZprinting favour transparent colours which are very pretty for some projects but many items work better in a solid colour. There are several solid colours available but we'd like to see more.
Realistically you're only going to buy a few colours anyway and there are some good colours available so this isn't a deal breaker. But if there were more colours available, we'd buy them.

- in almost all the religions, it's said that humanity would converge towards a point whereby science, technology, religion, culture, etc... would converge at some point? I previously didn't understand what this meant. Now I suspect I understand what may be meant by this. If you go through the fine details of a lot of human history, science, technology, economics, medicine, etc... a lot of it doesn't make sense and even contradicts itself. It's junk science, economics, politics, history, physics, biology, medicine, etc... If you interpret things in a particular way things come to a closure for a lot of of people if honesty, justice, progress, etc... win out. If Angels are real they get to go home, if pre-cogs/prophets were/are real they get to understand why an outside force seems to be constantly interfering in their lives, humans ascend to completely different level/plane at which point immortality and Ascension becomes viable, if humans were made they get to understand those who made them and watch over them, etc? Humans will have the ability to finally break down matter, reshape it in any way desired, and reform it in any way they want as prophesised by some?

The Trimurti[a](/t̪ɾimʊɾt̪iː/) is the trinity of supreme divinity in Hinduism,[2][3][4][5] in which the cosmic functions of creation, preservation, and destruction are personified as a triad of deities. Typically, the designations are that of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer.[6][b] The Om symbol of Hinduism is considered to have an allusion to Trimurti, where the A, U, and M phonemes of the word are considered to indicate creation, preservation and destruction, adding up to represent Brahman.[7] The Tridevi is the trinity of goddess consorts for the Trimurti.[8]

Can you scan all recent purcahses and print out your favourite food? best 3d printer for linux
sarcasmatwork 6 months ago | prev | next [–]
Having been in the 3d community for just over a year, I can share some suggestions and thoughts.
1) Bambu Labs X1 Carbon (X1C)
The X1C was my first printer, and now I have two. My research led me to the Bambu X1C as it was the most automated plug and play printer without much hassle. With it's design I could also print with a lot more types of filaments. I've been very happy my printer, I got a 2nd a few months later. I have over 400 hours on each printer without any issues. I've printed many 3d parts for the printer to make it last longer and provide a better experience.
You will need a slicer program to go from 3d model to 3d printer. I recommend the Orca Slicer.
https://github.com/SoftFever/OrcaSlicer
2) 3d Design is through 3D Software. Fusion 360(free depending on license), FreeCAD, OpenSCAD
3) Many sites to download models and print. Reach comments as the author may give tips for printing.
    https://www.printables.com/
    https://www.thingiverse.com/
    https://makerworld.com/en/models/categories
4) Filaments
I'd buy a ton of PLA, and test. Then start buying the type you need for the project.
Good luck!
Ask HN: How to get started 3D printing on Linux?
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40905977
                          Free 3D object repositories

There are many sites that have 3D objects that you can print on a 3D
printer. Usually it is a case of downloading the appropriate file and then
using the Slicer Software (discussed above) to create the G-Code. The
following are a few sites that have 3D files available.

     * Thingiverse
     * Yeggi
     * PinShape
     * Libre 3D
     * YouMagazine
     * TF3DM

                               3D CAD Software

If you are looking to create your own models then you will need some 3D
CAD or design software. There are two different 3D design applications
that I have used with Linux.
The first is Blender which is a 3D modeller. This is popular for creating
3D visual objects, such as characters used in games and animations. The
models can then be exported for use in a 3D printer.

The second is FreeCAD which is a full 3D CAD application. This is
particularly useful if you want to create parts that need to interact as
you can specify the exact dimensions. Learning FreeCAD is quite a steep
learning curve, but well worth it. FreeCAD is available for Linux and
works on the Raspberry Pi 3 (although I've only tried with small objects,
memory will be the main limitation).

If you are looking to learn FreeCAD then I found this FreeCAD Video
tutorial by j16out to be useful.

After creating a 3D object then you need to export it as an STL Mesh file
which can be opened in the Slicer software.

3d printer extruder won't heat up

http://community.robo3d.com/index.php?threads/extruder-wont-heat-up.6695/
The extruder on the Tronxy X1 is fairly decent (I have one). You will gain little by replacing it unless you want to print technical filaments. From my own (and others') experience, it is more likely to be the power supply that is at fault, rather than the heater cartridge. You really need a multimeter (volt-ohm meter) to perform the following tests:
The power supply is providing a steady 12V at all times.
12V is being supplied to the heater cartridge by the controller board.
The heater cartridge is not open circuit. If you measure its resistance with a multi-meter, it should be around 4 Ohms (including the leads). You should disconnect the heater cartridge from the controller board to perform this test.
You should also check that you have connected the heater wires correctly to the terminals on the controller board.
You should also check that the controller is not showing "def" for the extruder temperature. If it shows "def", this indicates a fault with the thermistor.
...

Likely the thermistor died, and without a reading from thermistor, firmware will not allow current to the heater, because fire.

Unlike other 3d printers which get their data off of SD cards, USB sticks, Wifi, etc... they connect via USB directly and the software used to connect is their own

Failure rate generally increases over time for most 3d printers but Bambulabs have been similary realiable over time. Bed adhesion issues, nozzle cleaning, software freezes, and crashes occasional issues to both Prusa and Bambulabs 3d printers and 3d printers in general. No real maintenance required.

Ender 3 depends on FOSS community to build firmware such as Marlin. The machine needs to be tweaked a lot to get it working well. Ender 3 is good for modifying and hacking but Bambulabs better for actually doing any work. Creality created K1 which is closest thing to something similar to Bambulabs

- G-code is the underlying language used to program 3d printers and is also used on other machinery such as CNC machines too
G-code (also RS-274) is the most widely used computer numerical control (CNC) and 3D printing programming language. It is used mainly in computer-aided manufacturing to control automated machine tools, as well as for 3D-printer slicer applications. The G stands for geometry. G-code has many variants.
G-code instructions are provided to a machine controller (industrial computer) that tells the motors where to move, how fast to move, and what path to follow. The two most common situations are that, within a machine tool such as a lathe or mill, a cutting tool is moved according to these instructions through a toolpath cutting away material to leave only the finished workpiece and/or an unfinished workpiece is precisely positioned in any of up to nine axes[1] around the three dimensions relative to a toolpath and, either or both can move relative to each other. The same concept also extends to noncutting tools such as forming or burnishing tools, photoplotting, additive methods such as 3D printing, and measuring instruments.

Perforated or Smooth Printing Board
For many users buying their first 3D Printer, bed adhesion is a common issue faced by new users. The UP Box+ is shipped with both Smooth and Perforated printing boards. Smooth boards are optimal when printing lower temperature materials with improved bottom layer aethsetics. The perforated board ensures excellent adhesion with a raft when printing high temperature materials like ABS and PC.

3d printing on sandpaper
cajko • 2y ago
i actually did this with 400 grid wet sandpaper and it works great. Honestly much better than any other bed adhesive. Just need to watch the clearance for nozzle-bed, the first layers stick pretty well and taking a printed part of it is much easier, first layer quality improved drastically for me with sandpaper and just to say sandpaper is way cheaper than real alternatives.

- moisture and dust contamination of filament can cause problems with printing, this machine deals with it by having seperate canister from which to load filament but it's only designed for filament purchased from company itself and only handles 0.5kg rolls not the usual 1.0kg rolls that are normally sold. Tiertime Up mini 2 is good introduction to desktop 3d printing devices. Small, enclosed 3d printers better for ABS filament printers and offer high quality. Can print in ABS, PLA, Nylon. Hardware and software integration needs work, isn't smooth, and seems to be proprietary. You need to login to website to upgrade temperature profiles. Varying level reviews

We just got these in my classroom, 12 in fact and we found that the parts that are in the extruder head snap easily when trying to fix so.ething and over 1/2 of our prints fail. Most of them are already broken despite that we've only had them for a few weeks. I was wondering if there was any maintenance things or something I might not have been aware about. Is this the norm for 3d printers? Are there any better classroom budget 3d printer's (we're in 6 grade). We've so far only used the white abs that it came in. It seems that when a student wants to print something it is not a matter of what ones are broken, however of what ones are working. Thanks so much for the feedback

How Do I Upgrade Ender 3 Pro Firmware?
    1. Confirm the motherboard version.  This should be 4.2.2 or 4.2.7
(depending on firmware choice).  If you have a recent Ender 3 Pro,
stock, it's most likely 4.2.2 but it's easy enough to check (I'll show
you how below).  Note also the CPU warning up above.
    2. Prepare a MicroSD card. The card should be formatted as FAT32. If you
have the card that came with your printer, and the MicroSD card
adapter, that's all you need.  Note that I do recommend you replace
the MicroSD Card and adapter, as they are low quality and common
points of failure.  See recommended immediate upgrades, scroll down to
       the picture of SD Cards.
    3. Find and download the firmware in the list above.
    4. Copy the firmware (it should end in .bin and be different from the
last firmware you may have installed) to the MicroSD card.  Delete any
other files on the SD card.
    5. Make sure your 3D printer is turned off.
    6. WARNING: Once you do the step below, there is no "undo" button. If you
want to "go back" to an older version of firmware, make sure you have
a copy of it saved. You can always reinstall an old version of
firmware - but you must have a copy of it somewhere, your printer will
not be able to "downgrade" or remember what it used to have installed.
    7. Insert the MicroSD card into the Ender 3 Pro, it should be on the left
side. Don't force it: on mine, the card should be inserted upside
       down.
    8. Turn the printer on. Do not touch it while it's powering on.
    9. It will take about 15 seconds (shouldn't take more than a minute) to
       install the new firmware.
   10. Done

The definition of legal death, and its formal documentation in a death certificate, vary according to the jurisdiction. The certification applies to somatic death, corresponding to death of the person, which has varying definitions but most commonly describes a lack of vital signs and brain function.[9] Death at the level of cells, called molecular death or cell death, follows a matter of hours later.[10] These distinctions, and the independence of physicians certifying legal death, are significant in organ procurement.[11]

Post-mortem changes
Post-mortem changes refer to the series of changes that occur to a body after death. These changes can generally be divided between early post-mortem changes and late post-mortem changes (also known as decomposition).[12] These changes occur along a continuum and can be helpful in determining the post-mortem interval, which is the time between death and examination.
The stages that follow shortly after death are:
- Corneal opacity or "clouding"
- Pallor mortis, paleness which happens in the first 15–120 minutes after death
- Livor mortis, or dependent lividity, a settling of the blood in the lower (dependent) portion of the body
- Algor mortis, the reduction in body temperature following death. This is generally a steady decline until matching ambient temperature
- Rigor mortis, the limbs of the corpse become stiff (Latin rigor) and difficult to move or manipulate
- Putrefaction, the beginning signs of decomposition
Of these, with obvious mortal damage to the body, the textbook conclusive signs of death clear to a lay person are: algor mortis, rigor mortis, livor mortis, and putrefaction.[13]
The cardinal signs of death may refer to the ending of breathing, heartbeat and circulation, or to algor mortis, livor mortis and rigor mortis; the adoption of brain death as a definition has lessened the centrality of these signs.[14][12] In a clearer contemporary terminology, algor mortis, livor mortis and rigor mortis are called "early postmortem" changes, in distinction from the "immediate postmortem" changes associated with the cessation of bodily functions, as indicated by vital signs.[15] With an ophthalmoscope, changes to the blood in the retina are quickly visible.[16]
Those stages are followed, in taphonomy, by
- Decomposition, the reduction into simpler forms of matter, accompanied by a strong, unpleasant odor.
- Skeletonization, the end of decomposition, where all soft tissues have decomposed, leaving only the skeleton.
- Fossilization, the natural preservation of the skeletal remains formed over a very long period. This stage may not occur, depending on the circumstances and the conditions of the surrounding environment.

nasa 3d food printing
BeeHex is trying a variety of business models. One route is a stand-alone machine that bakers can use to design on-demand confections. The company deploys the machine at minimal cost to bakers and charges only for the duration of use.
"We will have one in a popular cookie shop in Columbus," Contractor says. "Any customer can go, select a shape, print their cookie, and right there get a fresh customized cookie on the spot."
BeeHex has other 3D-printed food technology in the pipeline as well. For example, Contractor is working on a recovery bar machine that can personalize a breakfast or late lunch nutrition bar depending on a person's individual needs, such as genetics, metabolism, and blood markers.
"We are trying to connect it to physiological data like heart rate, calories burned, hydration levels," says Contractor, who is in talks with Columbus-area gyms about hosting such a device. "Right after a workout, people can get a personalized bar that covers 30 percent of daily recommended nutrition values."
The breakfast bar got a boost from research BeeHex is working on with the U.S. Army. "With that project, we collect the personal profile of soldiers—genetics, lactose intolerance or a gene presence that may trigger it, diabetes, physical activity over the last seven days," Contractor says. "Then we make the recovery bar."
Even with so much potential on Earth—BeeHex has two patents pending for its Chef 3D device—Contractor believes the truly revolutionary 3D-printing developments will occur back in space, where human tissue may one day be printed in layers without concern that the bottom layers will get squashed by the top ones.
"I'm very confident that this is going to happen sooner or later," Contractor says. "Tissues and organs needed for drug discoveries or human parts can be grown in space. It could be 30 or 60 or 100 years, but it's very likely this will happen. The foundation is in the 3D printing—the same thing we're doing."

A steak made from plastic waste seems unreal, a kind of sustainable dream, a new level in recycling, something that could turn the whole world as we know it upside down. Yes, this project is real and possible thanks to Beehex, a company that develops food solutions using different 3D printing technologies. It was founded by Anjan Contractor, an engineer affiliated with NASA. The idea is simple: give astronauts 3D printed meals. "Plastic waste is collected and then shredded. In the end it will go into the bioreactor, which contains very specific modified bacteria," explains Anjan. These modified bacteria eat the plastic and turn it into biomass, and thanks to that it can be used to produce 3D printed meals.

Controversies
Creality has a history of GPL violations around the Marlin firmware and other GPL software. The first documented case is from 2018,[10] and Creality continued this behavior until at least 2022.[11]
In March 2022, Creality was sued by Artec for allegedly plagiarizing Artec Studio's software code.[12] The case was filed in the New York Eastern District Court on March 25 and is still pending.[13]
Criticism
One point of criticism regarding Bambu Lab's 3D printers is their dependence on the cloud. In August 2023, a Bambu Cloud outage caused some printers to print uncontrollably or cease functioning altogether.[10]
Although Bambu Lab took responsibility and promised new security features, criticism intensified in 2025 following the discovery of a security vulnerability in the cloud connection.[11][12] The manufacturer announced in a blog post that future firmware would be equipped with an authorization and authentication protection mechanism.[13] Users feared that basic functions, such as printing over the local area network (LAN), would require authorization via the Bambu Cloud and restrict the use of third-party slicers.[14][15][16] Bambu Lab also retroactively edited the original blog post to corroborate a newer post where they dismissed many concerns that users had, claiming they were the target of misinformation and cited their edited post as proof. However, the original, unedited, post along with their terms of service appeared to confirm or imply that many of these concerns were not unfounded,[17][13][independent source needed] some of which are concerns that Bambu Lab intends to force users into a cloud connection/subscription model. Louis Rossmann criticized Bambu Lab for restricting device functionality[18][19] as well as pointing out that they have changed the terms of service without any notice and removing evidence of said changes.
- due to market consolidation a lot of them are basically clones of one another. Moreover, a lot of them differ very slightly much likes cars with added options and upgrades. I looked around at some cheaper 3d printers that I could repair and use to learn about 3d printing. Lots of them have similar problems including alignment, heating, lack of parts, extrusion issues, etc... There are heaps of clones or slight variations of known designs out there now with regards to both software and hardware

flashforge adventurer 3
For anyone asking if they should buy the Adventurer 3 or 4: my review.
Adventurer 3 at this price is a great deal if you need an enclosed printer. Personally, I have two ADV3's, a ADV4, and an ender 3 v2. I find the ADV4 to be the least buggy, but the ender 3 gives me better quality prints. The ADV3's are just gathering dust as I prefer the larger build space of the other two printers. This is a great price for them though and close to what I paid for for mine - I would not recommend anyone buy the adventurer series for anything over $200 for a ADV3 or $300 for a ADV4.
ADV3: Great little printer if you get one for cheap. Not too loud, looks nice, and I rarely have to adjust anything. However it has multiple issues that make it not worth the $350 asking price: The build plate is only 150150150 which is very restrictive. The spool holder is sized for 500g spools and you will have to print an extension and have a spool holder sticking out of it if you want to use regular sized rolls. The wifi has never worked for me and I believe that it's been the case for the majority of people. It will not maintain a steady connection despite being within 2 feet of my router. The camera quality is also horrific and I literally can't even tell what I'm printing looking at it most times. The 3 and the pro are the exact same printer, the pro just includes a glass build plate and a 265C nozzle. The lite is the same printer but without the filament sensor or camera. If buying, go for whichever one is cheaper. The camera is so bad you'd be better off throwing a cheap $10 webcam or an old phone in there.
Mine are just gathering dust as the build plate is too small for what I need. The series was intended to take advantage of the educational market and it makes that very obvious - it's reliable when printing but heavily overpriced for what it is.
ADV4: Significantly improved with a 220200250 build platform. I think wifi works a bit better but I have it plugged in directly anyways. The camera is still garbage. Increased size for a regular 1kg spool. Very reliable and I like the flexible build plate. I print on it often. The quality of my prints isn't as good as what I get out of my ender 3, but it is significantly less fickle and requires way less constant adjustment. It does need a few tweaks that I have detailed in other posts though. This would be a great printer... for $350 MSRP.
Common to both printers: The extruder is very underpowered, but can be upgraded with better gears or you can just bolt on any extruder upgrade that will fit a standard NEMA 17 motor. I swapped the entire assembly with a $10 dual gear extruder.
The hotend uses proprietary nozzles that are a bit on the pricey side. I use a 0.6 one and have had no issues with it. They seem to last quite a while, haven't had to replace one yet. The cooling fans are also underpowered, and both printers get very sloppy or start displaying layer shift issues above 75mm/s or so.
The software is also closed source and you can't really make any improvements to it. Someone has managed to crack the firmware open on them so there may be some additional development in the future but I wouldn't hold my breath on it.
All in all, unless you get a good deal on them, I do NOT recommend anyone purchase these printers. Flashforge makes some of the best printers on the market but the Adventurer series is definitely not one of them.

Cura Software:
I cant find any info on setting up the software and I am not sure how to setup the Machine/Basic/Advance/pretty much everthing.
So I used this(hope is correct) :
http://www.wanhao3dprinter.com/xiazai/CURA_WANHAO_EDITION_USER_MANUEL_rev.a.pdf
https://www.3dhubs.com/talk/thread/wanhao-duplicator-i3-cura-settinings
http://3dprinterbrain.info/pmwiki.php/DupI3/SlicerSettings
"Cura:
Cura download and info
These are the only parameters I had to change (apart from choosing Prusa i3 as a machine on the first startup wizard of Cura):
Basic tab:
Layer height: 0.1mm or 0.2mm (I would first recommend 0.2mm)
Print speed: 50mm/sec
Printing temp: 190 C
Bed temp: 45 C
Filament: Diameter: 1.75 mm (you might wanna measure that more precisely if you have access to a digital caliper)
Flow: 100% (I think this was the default already)
Advanced tab:
Nozzle size: 0.4mm
Travel speed: 100mm/sec
Infill speed: 60mm/sec
All of the above parmaeters are VERY important to be changed from their defaults, otherwise you will for sure have many problems.
A bit unfortunate that the official Cura guide from Wanhao does not mention these parameters at all, e.g. that you need to change them from the default. Actually, to be honest, I have not tried the installed on the SD card, maybe somehow they already haved baked these parameter values in the installer somehow, but I doubt."
...
I uploaded a video on the first day – for the first print that had my settings in the description

What I've been using for cura
Cura Settings: (osx, 15.04.4) – basically what I could glean from the manual.
In the wizard. Select "Other" in the first screen and "Prusa Mendel i3" in the second.
Machine settings:

Support:
Support type: None
Platform adhesion type: None
Filament:

- the interesting thing about 3d printing food is the potential to leave all animals like cows, chickens, orangutans, macaques, duck, geese, beavers, fish, pigs, crabs, etc... alone now if you build/print/recycle food at a molecular (or even sub-atomic) level? Food yield and efficiency goes up drastically and unlike Star Trek Replicator technology has much lower power requirements and complexity. You don't have to deal with the existing moral quandries that humans face like "man's best friend" becoming "man's tasty best friend", forced animal labour, human trafficking/modern slavery/cheap labour, etc... anymore

Every Year, Half a Million Horseshoe Crabs Are Captured, And We Drain Their Blue Blood:
This ancient marine creature's blood contains a unique chemical that detects bacterial contamination with unmatched speed and precision. This groundbreaking discovery was made in the 1960s by scientists Frederick Bang and Jack Levin.
Their work led to the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) test, now a vital tool in pharmaceutical safety, protecting everything from vaccines to IV fluids.
As a result, today, 500,000 horseshoe crabs are captured each year for their blood.
Despite concerns about the impact on horseshoe crab populations, conservation efforts aim to balance medical needs with ecological preservation, returning most crabs to the ocean after blood extraction. However, the blood loss decreases the likelihood that they will survive.
So for now, these underappreciated arthropods, whose evolutionary lineage predates the dinosaurs, continue to save lives. And in a twist few could have predicted, humanity owes much of its modern medical safety to these living fossils from the ocean floor.

- bed leveling seems to be an obsession for many 3d printers enthusiasts and if you understand how it makes you'll realise how crucial it really is. Most 3d printers nowadays are Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) based which means you layer tiny bits of plastic on top of one another until you get the object you want. If you can't do this part done properly it's pointless trying to continue as you the layers won't stick together properly or stick inconsistently. Using calibration cards, feeler gauges, thermal paper, automated systems, etc... to level the bed common techniques. According to many people ~80% of problems in the 3d printing world are caused by unlevel beds

Upgrade the Ender 3 V2 PTFE Tube and Couplers in 5 Minutes or Less
- a few years there was a lot of hoopla regarding how 3d printing was going to take over but it obviously never took off. That means there are heaps of 3d printers being dumped on the secondary/used market for cheap often along with extra parts. It's obvious the owners didn't realise how difficult and time consuming the hobby would become? I bought a test 3d printer for cheap to see how good/bad the technology really, I wanted to research the subject, and practice learning is sometimes the only way to make progress in a subject. It is as bad as a lot of online reviews say it is. A lot of work/maintenance is required to setup, maintain, service, etc... 3d printers in general. Early models have no concept of automated setup so getting the bed flat/level is not easy which is crucial to making any 3d print work. There have been modules/upgrades to help with this but basically you still have to do a lot on your own. After that, you need to figure out how to insert the filament, get it heated up, model stuff, and then lay it down. In theory sounds easy, in practice not so much. The Ender 3 V1 I got had slight difference height at one particular corner which meant that you couldn't get a level bed which may explain why the original owner tried to get rid of it and said it had "layering issues"? I suspect he didn't really understand what may have happened but it seems to work fine with a lot of tinkering

Random Quotes:
- In 2004 on the ABC TV George Negus Tonight program, Fox's work ethic and business savviness was profiled.[13] When asked by George Negus how he describes himself politically, Fox replied: "I guess, Labor think I'm Liberal, Liberal think I'm Labor, the Catholics think I'm Protestant, the Protestants think I'm Catholic. The local rabbi delivers me matse. So I guess, bottom line, I'm an Australian".[13] Fox went on to say: "I, traditionally, probably, was brought up in a working-class family where the old man would turn in his grave if he'd thought I'd have voted Liberal. But I must admit, from probably 25 up to the last election, I would have voted Liberal and supported Liberal quite strongly. But I was completely disillusioned by the lack of statesmanship with our Prime Minister with the Ansett debacle. He had an opportunity to be a statesman. Instead he took on a political role and as a result of that, the demise of Ansett came about".[13]
Following the suicide of his son Michael in 1991, Fox advised the Federal and Victorian governments on youth suicide[3] and is on the board of the National Advisory Council on Suicide Prevention.[14] In 1992 he was named "Victorian Father of the Year".[3] In an interview with George Negus in August 2004, Fox spoke of the loss of his son: "Well, life is about being up and being down and being able to get up again. And in my walks of life, I guess I thought I was invincible till one of my sons committed suicide. And at that point of time, I knew I wasn't invincible ... I'd give up everything if we could get Michael back. He's got a special place in each and every one of the hearts of our family and he'll always be there and he'll never grow old."[13]

- The Trump administration on Monday unveiled its latest proposal for reining in the cost of pharmaceuticals: requiring television advertisements for prescription drugs to display the price tag of the medication being promoted. For the 10 drugs seen most often on TV, the administration says, those list prices range from $535 to a whopping $11,000 per month or per course of treatment.
Like the administration's other efforts to address this issue, the mandate is a small response to an enormous problem. The United States spends more per capita on prescription drugs — roughly half a trillion dollars a year — than any other country, and that spending has been increasing far faster than inflation, wages or the U.S. economy. The assumption behind the proposal is that forcing a pharmaceutical company to reveal the list price of the fabulous new cure it is touting will somehow shame it into keeping the price down.
Good luck with that. Although a handful of drug makers have reduced or canceled price increases this year in response to President Trump's criticism, most have not. According to the Associated Press, prices went up on 4,412 brand-name drugs in the first seven months of 2018, and down on 46.
Some critics also argue that it would violate the free speech protections of the 1st Amendment to force drug companies to disclose their list prices. And drug makers note correctly that very few people actually pay list prices.
The proposal would reveal little about how much those drugs ultimately sell for, or how much people with insurance will pay for them — directly (through deductibles and co-pays) and indirectly (through premiums).
To its credit, the administration has been actively trying to slow the rise of drug costs through an array of often down-in-the-weeds reforms. And in sharp contrast to what it has done on Obamacare, the administration's efforts to boost competition, alter incentives and increase transparency have generally helped consumers. But drug makers are unusually well insulated from the market forces the administration is trying to marshal — they have patents that guarantee them temporary monopolies, products that are vital and even life-saving, and customers whose bills are often paid by insurers. It will take much more dramatic changes to make a meaningful difference in drug prices.

- The Liberal Party is slipping that way. Australia is going to need a new party or the Liberals are going to have to pull up on the stick sooner rather than later.
Asked who he meant by "the crazies", he listed the following top five 'crazy' Liberal MPs:
Tony Abbott - "a singularly destructive human being"
Peter Dutton - "obviously another one"
Angus Taylor - the newly appointed Energy Minister who is seen as a champion of fossil fuels and a determined opponent of renewables. "Despite being very intelligent he can't get on the right side of events."

Scandinavia is one of the world's most secular and irreligious regions, with only one in 10 Swedes believing that religion plays an important role in daily life. This tendency extends even to worshippers themselves. One poll surprisingly found that only 15 percent of the Church of Sweden members actually believe in Jesus.

- In eBay's lawsuit, Amazon representatives are accused of creating eBay accounts and then messaging sellers to persuade them to take their goods to Amazon.com instead. eBay argues that the move violated its user agreement.
The plaintiff claimed that Amazon's "abuse" was systematic and had the sole purpose of harming Ebay.
Trying to avoid detection in messages?
Amazon representatives allegedly attempted to evade detection using code words and abbreviations, by spelling out their email addresses and also asking eBay sellers to speak with them over the phone.
When referencing their firm, Amazon representatives would allegedly write AMZ, A.M.Z.N or a-m-a-z-o-n, in order to make it harder for eBay to find them through keyword searches.
According to the lawsuit, the poaching operation was not only carried out by Amazon employees in the US, but also in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and Singapore.
eBay says that Amazon has been luring and stealing its sellers since 2015. The online auction platform is demanding a desist order, damages and penalties from Amazon.

- A pair of researchers, one with Trent University in Canada, the other the University of Manchester in the U.K. has found evidence that rats living in cities have a much richer diet than rats living in the country. In their paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Eric Guiry and Michael Buckley describe their isotopic analysis of rats living in Toronto during the years 1790 to 1890, and what they found.
It is commonly believed that rats living in cities have it better than rats living in the country. Besides having access to more food sources, city rats rarely have to share those sources with other animals. They also have access to better shelter from the elements. Guiry and Buckley note that despite their long history living with rats, people still do not know all that much about them and how they actually live. To learn more, they embarked on a study that covered a 100-year period and included rats from a host of sites in and around the city of Toronto, Ontario.
The researchers gained access to samples of rats from museums, universities and other archaeologists working around Toronto. They first conducted a molecular study of the rats, discarding any that were not of the species they were after: Rattus norvegicus. They used stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses to study proteins found in the rat bones. Doing so gave them an accurate representation of what the rats were eating as they scurried around in 19th-century Canada.
The researchers discovered that the rats that lived in the cities had a homogenous, stable diet compared to country rats. They found it did not really matter which part of the city, either—rats in the city ate very well. They also ate a lot of meat. In sharp contrast, rats that lived a rural existence tended to have a more limited diet—one that included little to no meat. Guiry and Buckley suggest that part of the problem for rats in the country is that they have to compete for food with raccoons and other foraging animals.
The researchers are hoping that their study will offer more data for other researchers looking into controlling rat populations in urban areas.

- "Our concept is a response to a preemptive strike. For those who know, there's no need to explain what it is, but for the uninitiated I will say it again. This means that we are ready and will use nuclear weapons only when we make sure that someone, a potential aggressor, strikes at Russia, at our territory," Putin said.
"The aggressor must know that retribution is inevitable, that it will be destroyed. And we, the victims of aggression, will go to heaven as martyrs, while they will simply die, because they will not even have time to repent," he added.
The president stressed that Russia will never start a nuclear war, as it would lead to a global catastrophe.

- Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the Iranian nation should look to countries in the East on its path of scientific progress, because relying on Western states will not contribute to the country's growth.
"Those countries are mostly in Asia. Therefore, we should look to the East, rather than the West," the Leader said in a meeting with scientific elites in Tehran on Wednesday.
"Looking to the West and Europe has no benefit other than having to stand idle, begging favors and undergoing humiliation," he added.
Ayatollah Khamenei also referred to enemy attempts to portray a false image of Iran, saying that despite the economic problems in the country, including currency fluctuations and livelihood concerns, the country's image is quite the opposite of what "domineering foreigners" are trying to show.
"Portraying a false, negative and disappointing image of the situation in Iran is the most important agenda of the enemy today," said the Leader. "But…the real image of the country is in general the opposite of the one that the hegemonic system" is attempting to portray.
The Leader compared the ongoing media war against Iran to the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, saying, "While Iran's counter-propaganda prowess is lacking just as it did during the war, we will undoubtedly triumph in this fight with God's help, just as we did" back then.
Ayatollah Khamenei named "misrepresentation" of the facts as the enemy's main mind manipulation tactic both inside and outside of Iran, and said the country's young elites needed to do their utmost to win the "heavy battle."
Ayatollah Khamenei further warned against enemy plots to plunder national wealth, including the assassination of scientific elites, and urged vigilance in the face of such attempts.
The Leader further reminded the scientific elites of wars being imposed against Iran on "economic, political and security" fronts, and called on them not to remain indifferent to such campaigns.
"If we make progress on the scientific path, the threats posed by the enemies of our civilization, politics and economy will not last," the Leader added.
Ayatollah Khamenei also advised that the viewpoints of young elites be incorporated into different sectors, and called for diversification of the economy and changing it from a system that is entirely dependent on oil, to one that is independent, knowledge-based and resistant.

- "A deodorant is a substance applied to the body to prevent body odour caused by the bacterial breakdown of sweat in armpits," she says.
"Antiperspirants, however, affect odour but also prevent sweating by decreasing sweat production by sweat glands."
...
"Ingredients used in natural deodorants include cornstarch, clay, baking soda, eucalyptus, aloe, coconut oil, eucalyptus and essential oils which have roles in absorbing moisture and combating odour-causing bacteria. These have varying degrees of effectiveness and are probably not as effective as clinical commercial antiperspirants."
While a natural deodorant might stop the stench, it won't stop its source – your sweat – and could still leave you feeling unpleasantly sticky (and your clothes unpleasantly stained). So, they might be fine for people who only sweat a little, but could cause problems for those who sweat more heavily.
If you want a product to stop your sweating, there are three things you should be looking for on the label: aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium-zirconium compounds.
"These react with the electrolytes in sweat or keratin in sweat ducts to form a plug, hence blocking the excretion of sweat," Dr Tan says.

- Australian television legend Humphrey B. Bear has fronted the cameras as part of ABC Friend's campaign to restore full funding to the ABC.
The funny old fellow appears in a campaign video painting a dystopian picture of a future where the ABC has been commercialised, and the Bananas in Pyjamas programme is suffering from product placement advertising.
He sits with a girl of about his age, and acts saddened at what has happened to one of his favourite programmes.
The really amazing bear covered his eyes and shook his head from side to side, gesticulating that he was profoundly saddened that budget cuts had led to a dramatic lessening of Australian children's content on the ABC, and didn't mind if it got him in all manner of strife.
"                                                                      ," said the fun-loving bear.
ABC Friends National Spokesman Ranald Macdonald said he welcomed Humphrey joining the ABC Friends Campaign.
"It's hardly so very surprising," he said, "that a bear that leads such an exciting life would call for the restoration of ABC funding."
"Australian children's television programming on the ABC has dramatically reduced over the last years because of costs."
"We are calling on electors to vote for any candidate this election who pledges to restore ABC funding to pre Abbott/Turnbull government levels." he said.
