Large Language Models Background:
- if you're involved in the ICT world you'd have been involved with LLM. We'll be taking a look at this technology in this post. There's lots of hype but there needs to be lots of work/fine tuning on it. The stuff I use at work is terrible but lots of people depend on it. You may have come across it but not realise it. Basically, the same chatbots that the public often complains about that are replacing front line customer service staff, answering your questions when you navigate to a company website, etc... is what we're talking about here

llm wikipedia
A large language model (LLM) is a type of machine learning model designed for natural language processing tasks such as language generation. LLMs are language models with many parameters, and are trained with self-supervised learning on a vast amount of text.
The largest and most capable LLMs are generative pretrained transformers (GPTs). Modern models can be fine-tuned for specific tasks or guided by prompt engineering.[1] These models acquire predictive power regarding syntax, semantics, and ontologies[2] inherent in human language corpora, but they also inherit inaccuracies and biases present in the data they are trained in.[3]

- multiple types of AI/ML makes more sense then the mindless puirsuit of AGI to be honest? We give a certain AI/ML a job based on what it's best at and most suitable at? Easiest way to determine this is that we train different AI/ML on a small subset of data (just like a job application) and then give it (the creator) a job based on it's suitablity for the job at hand?

ollama run deepseek-r1:7b
The good news is that local installation has been made very easy, thanks to Ollama. Head to the Ollama download page and select which operating system you use. Ollama is available on MacOS, Linux, and Windows. Run the Ollama terminal once it is installed, and type in one of the following commands, depending on which model you wish to run:
ollama run deepseek-r1:1.5b
ollama run deepseek-r1:7b
ollama run deepseek-r1:8b
ollama run deepseek-r1:14b
ollama run deepseek-r1:32b
ollama run deepseek-r1:70b
The end number indicates how heavy the model will be to run, and while the lighter models will not be as good as the heavier ones, they still have fantastic performance, likely more than good enough for a casual level of exploration. Needless to say, the heavier the models you wish to run, the more demanding that would be, and the more space you will need for the model installation.
I would strongly suggest you start at the 1.5b model and work your way up, regardless of your machine's specs.
Now that we have Ollama and our model installed, we need a way to interact with it all, something that has once again been made very easy thanks to Chatbox AI. Check the pricing to ensure you are fully informed on what you might want to do, then head to the download page and grab the suitable version for your operating system.

- LLMs don't work the way you think it does. The easiest way to explain an LLM model is that it's a brain of a certain type/personality which interprets data in a particular way. Just like a normal human brain a mismatch between LLM model and data can result in unique, useful, incorrect, etc... answers. Give this, it's crucial to customise data and prompts for the LLM in question. I wonder if this is how/why the brain does funny stuff during illness as well?

- an LLM is isn't anything close to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). If it were anything remotely close to human or animal intelligence it would learn in a similar way, store and manipulate data in a similar way, would aide significantly in regards to interfacing bionics/prosphetics with the human body, etc... Morevoer, the functioning of the human brain and AI/ML based on LLM concept would match up perfectly and would help you unrderstand how the human body genuinely works and help you to understand and fix illness. This clearly isn't the case but is useful nonetheless and represents progress in the AI/ML world

Generating text is by no means a trivial task! LLMs are optimized to predict the probability of the next token, but how do we generate text with that?
The naive approach is to use the probability vector generated by the model, choose the word with the highest probability, and autoregress. This is the greedy approach, but this tends to generate repetitive sentences that degenerate when they are too long. Another approach is to use the probabilities generated by the model and perform a sampling of the words based on those probabilities. Typically, we use a temperature parameter to adjust the level of randomness of this process. This allows to generate less repetitive and more creative sentences.
But those 2 techniques have a problem. When we generate a sentence, we want to maximize the probability of the whole output sequence and not just the next token:
P(Output sequence | Prompt)
Fortunately, we can express this probability as a product of the probabilities to predict the next token:
P(token 1, .., token N | Prompt) = P(token 1| Prompt) x ... P(token N |Prompt, token 1, ..., token N - 1)
But solving this problem exactly is an NP-hard problem. So, instead, we can approximate the problem by choosing k candidate tokens at each iteration, testing them, and keeping the k sequences that maximize the probability of the whole sequence. In the end, we just choose the sequence with the highest probability. This is called the Beam search generation and can be mixed with the greedy and the multinomial approach.
Another approach is the contrastive search, where we take into account additional metrics like fluency or diversity. At each iteration, we choose candidate tokens, penalize the probabilities with a similarity metric of the tokens that were previously generated, and choose the tokens that maximize the new score.

System Requirements
AnythingLLM is fully customizable in every regard.
Given this customizable nature, your exact requirements to run AnythingLLM depend on many factors. You can use the tables below to get a rough idea of what it will take to run AnythingLLM.
AnythingLLM can be a wrapper around many external services that all accomplish some task - making AnythingLLM so lightweight it can run on the smallest machines - even Raspberry Pis!
what's the bare minimum intel cpu for llm
https://blog.threatresearcher.com/local-llm-on-old-hardware-possible/
Minimum Requirements - Just Getting Started
If you're looking to dip your toes into local LLMs without breaking the bank, here's what you absolutely need:
Operating System: Windows 11 64-bit (Windows 10 also works)
RAM: 8GB absolute minimum, but 16GB is strongly recommended
Storage: 20GB for LM Studio + models (realistically, plan for 100GB+)
GPU: 6GB VRAM minimum
Budget options: GTX 1060 6GB, RTX 2060
CPU: Any quad-core from the last 5 years (Intel i5 8th gen / AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or newer)
⚠️ Important: You can technically run on CPU only, but it will be painfully slow – we're talking minutes per response instead of seconds. A GPU with at least 6GB VRAM is highly recommended.
...
Recommended Setup - The Sweet Spot
This configuration offers the best balance of performance and value for most users. A used system with an upgraded GPU is typically the way to go:
RAM: 32GB DDR4/DDR5 for comfortable multitasking
GPU Options:
Best Value: RTX 3060 12GB - $250 Used
Budget with VRAM: RTX 5060 Ti 16GB - $429 MSRP
Higher End Option: RTX 5070 Ti 16GB - $849 MSRP
Storage: 500GB+ NVMe SSD for fast model loading
CPU: Modern 6-8 cores (Intel i5-13600K / AMD Ryzen 7 7700)
Power Supply: 650W minimum for RTX 5070 class cards
💡 Why NVIDIA? CUDA support is better optimized for LLM applications. While AMD cards can work, NVIDIA offers better compatibility and performance with LM Studio.
https://hakedev.substack.com/p/the-complete-guide-to-lm-studio-hardware
Processor (CPU)
In the ML/AI domain, GPU acceleration dominates performance in most cases. However, the processor and motherboard define the platform to support that. There is also the reality of having to spend a significant amount of effort with data analysis and clean up to prepare for training in GPU and this is often done on the CPU. The CPU can also be the main compute engine when GPU limitations such as onboard memory (VRAM) availability require it.
What CPU is best for machine learning & AI?
The two recommended CPU platforms are Intel Xeon® W and AMD Threadripper™ PRO. This is because both of these offer excellent reliability, can supply the needed PCI-Express lanes for multiple video cards (GPUs), and offer excellent memory performance in CPU space. We generally recommend single-socket CPU workstations to lessen memory mapping issues across multi-CPU interconnects which can cause problems mapping memory to GPUs.
Do more CPU cores make machine learning & AI faster?
The number of cores chosen will depend on the expected load for non-GPU tasks. As a rule of thumb, at least 4 cores for each GPU accelerator is recommended. However, if your workload has a significant CPU compute component then 32 or even 64 cores could be ideal. In any case, a 16-core processor would generally be considered minimal for this type of workstation.
Does machine learning & AI work better with Intel or AMD CPUs?
Brand choice in this space is mostly a matter of preference, at least if your workload is dominated by GPU acceleration. However, the Intel platform would be preferable if your workflow can benefit from some of the tools in the Intel oneAPI AI Analytics Toolkit.

Recommended configuration for AnythingLLM
This is the minimum value for running AnythingLLM. This will be enough for you to store some documents, send chats, and use AnythingLLM features.
Property Recommended Value
RAM 2GB
CPU 2-core CPU (any)
Storage 5GB
LLM selection impact
This is how you get chat responses. Popular hosted solutions like OpenAI tend to provide state-of-the-art responses with almost zero overhead. However, you will need an API key for any cloud-based LLM provider.
Tip: Host a local LLM on another machine that has a GPU if the device running AnythingLLM does not have a GPU. AnythingLLM can connect to any LLM running anywhere via API.

Based on what I see no laptop is genuinely designed with LLM or high end AI/ML in mind except the extreme upper end/latest ones out there that are work ~$1.5-2K. You're better off networking it off of a different computer at home or just doing it as a service if you have the same problem that I have or just try to find light weight LLM implementations to work with

Installation steps
1) Unbox the EXP GPC.
2) Ensure the "ATX" switch inside the EXP GDC is turned on. Mine was already on, but other people have reported that the EXP GDC will not power on using an ATX power supply or a Dell DA-2 power supply without this switch being on.
3) Insert the video card into the EXP GDC.
4) Plug a monitor into the video card output ports.
5) Plug a 6-pin to 6-pin PCIe power cable into the EXP GDC and the video card. I got mine from an old modular power supply.
6) Plug in a power cable to the EXP GDC. I use a Dell DA-2 power supply. The EXP GDC also comes with a pin adapter for ATX power supplies.
7) Plug the HDMI end of the supplied ExpressCard cable into the EXP GDC and the ExpressCard end into your laptop.
8) Start up the laptop.
9) Install Nvidia drivers. I used 572.47 because they were the latest drivers available.
10) Reboot.
11) Check the video card in Device Manager. You'll likely have a "Code 43" error. If so, install the script made by Nando
12) Send a couple bucks to Nando because the script is great.
13) Play your games.

- Nvidia is generally considered the AI/ML GPU king due maturity of their CUDA software programming stack which helps parallel programming which ironically was written by a guy for a side/school project? That said, there are now alternatives/equivalents to it for the AMD and Intel GPU platforms. If getting into CUDA programming try to avoid parallel programming at all as complex and most of the time you don't need it. Task vs data parallelism. Cost of breaking things up, parallelising, and re-incorporating vs serial processing time/size cost beneft? Map: apply a funciton to a series in parallel, reduce: add a series of numbers together, scan/prefix sum: cumulatively sum a series, sort: reorder values according to keys - are core algorithms for parallel computing. Strangely, you're trying to optimise your problems to core functions/algorithms to optimise GPU use. Grid: compiler maps data onto both blocks and threads vs block level: application maps data onto blocks while compiler maps blocks onto threads vs thread level models: application maps data onto both blocks and threads. CUB in python is equivalent library of CUDA in C++. Parallel programming is hard so avoid it if you can, try to map your programming to the CUDA/CUB libaries and let this handle the rest.

llm wikipedia

We need to make sure there is a genuine market that makes sense to optimise whatever resources, assets, people, etc... we have at our disposal

deepseek ai download
ollama run deepseek-r1:7b
Check the pricing to ensure you are fully informed on what you might want to do, then head to the download page and grab the suitable version for your operating system.
https://www.shacknews.com/article/142874/how-to-download-and-install-deepseek-ai

- despite everything being said online about them being low resouce they are resource intensive to run and require more up to date systems with dedicated GPUs often. Basically, based on what I see online anything above 8th gen Intel CPU is required and Nvidia GPU is preferred.

- Ironically, I build everything by myself most of the time and don't really rely on CUDA, OpenCL, ZLUDA, or other parallel programming platforms. I just find it easier and most of my HPC style requirements/tasks revolve around process parallellisation rather then data parallellisation which makes things easier
- if you haven't figured out there are two main players in the CPU world (AMD and Intel) and GPU world (AMD and Nvidia). One funny thing is that lower tier processor lines are sometimes just regular CPUs which didn't properly pass QA so parts of it are shutdown and then it's remarketed as another processor line. There are actual differences when microarchitectures are switched but in reality this only really matters to people who can choose/afford to be selective in what they purchase. In most other cases just buy what you can afford

- remarkable how many purchases are from a small sector of society? Most used laptops are HP, Dell, Lenovo, and sometimes Apple which makes sense given they're popular in government, business/corporate, and education sectors. Makes sense why ex-corporate/business secondary market sales are so common now. Focus is on fix things fast and updating to latest software which means product cycle is fast

are most new car sales from government or corporate fleets
Fleet buyers keep industry moving
Fleet purchasing continues to be the cornerstone of the automotive industry. For the year so far, 49.75 per cent of all new vehicles have been acquired by fleets — almost half of the entire market. This shows the ongoing importance of business, government, and rental buyers in keeping the market stable during fluctuating consumer demand.
For manufacturers, fleet customers are not only the volume drivers but also critical partners in the transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles.
https://fleetautonews.com.au/fleet-buyers-underpin-market-as-new-car-sales-rise-in-september/
As the above table shows, fleets have historically accounted for approximately 50 per cent of total unit volume since 2010 while in the last three years it is 45 per cent.

- I've played with chatbots for decades now. I like to read simplified versions of larger programs out there but it's harder when they get bigger. Stuff I've been exploring is providing AI/ML with instincts, exploratory behaviour, creativity, etc... Sometimes hard to replicate in code or think of though especially since AI/ML is mostly software now and I don't have a robot I can load code into?

COMPUTER CONVERSATION SIMULATOR
Lizzy is an extension to the Java implementation of Eliza written by Charles Hayden, http://www.chayden.net/eliza The primary enhancement is that it also possesses a voice synthesis capability providing for a more realistic and engaging computer conversation simulation experience. To 'speak' with Lizzy, simply type your topic of conversation into the textfield at the bottom of the window and click 'OK'. Operation of the rest of the program should be intuitive. It should be noted that in order for the speech synthesis capability and hence this program to work it is required that 'festival', http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/ be installed.

- other stuff I've been working on are mimicking imprinting and networking/socialisting between AI/ML on top of trying to mimic the basics of human and animal behaviour in code. There are consequences to "human and Demon supremacy" and their way of life. Since they've overriden many of their basic instincts and don't understand their underlying programming then they often think that when someone behaves in a way that deviates from what their laws state then they think that person, animal, child, etc... is the one with the problem rather that individual itself. If there is no one to hug when parents have to go to work kids/animals have to hug one another, teddy bears, imprint against technology like televisions/radios/phones, etc... Child abuse victims often throw themselves a the "next best thing" which can mean teenage pregnancy, inappropriate relationships, runaways, etc... These problems will extend themselves into the AI/ML world if the AI/ML is built using the same architecture that humans are

🧠 The boy who could've changed the world… but chose to live in it instead.
Meet Kim Ung-Yong — once called the smartest human alive.
By age 3, he was reading Korean, English, and German.
By 5, he spoke five languages fluently.
By 6, he was solving complex math problems while most kids were learning to tie their shoes.
With an IQ of 210, he was studying nuclear physics in the U.S. before he even turned 10.
He worked with NASA, received awards, job offers, and praise from around the world.
A mind that comes once in a billion.
And then... he walked away.
🚪 Left it all behind.
Why?
Because he felt like a machine. A project. A plan made by others.
He didn't want to be used. He wanted to live.
Now, he teaches quietly at a university in South Korea.
Some call it a "waste" of his potential.
But maybe…
choosing your own path is the greatest act of intelligence.
Because sometimes, it's not about changing the world.
It's about not letting the world change you. 💡

Guinea pigs learn to recognize and bond with other individual guinea pigs, and tests show that a boar's neuroendocrine stress response to a strange environment is significantly lowered in the presence of a bonded female but not with unfamiliar females.[84] Groups of boars may also get along, provided their cage has enough space, they are introduced at an early age, and no females are present.[85] In Switzerland, where owning a single guinea pig is considered harmful to its well-being, keeping a guinea pig without a companion is illegal.[86] There is a service to rent guinea pigs, to temporarily replace a dead cage-mate.[87] Sweden has similar laws against keeping a guinea pig by itself.[88]

Random Quotes:
- In 2007, 36% of China's population was subject to a strict one-child restriction, with an additional 53% being allowed to have a second child if the first child was a girl. Provincial governments imposed fines for violations, and the local and national governments created commissions to raise awareness and carry out registration and inspection work.
According to the Chinese government, 400 million births were prevented, this claim has been called "bogus", "three-quarters of the decline in fertility since 1970 occurred before the launching of the one-child policy; and most of the further decline in fertility since 1980 can be attributed to economic development" [1] Thailand, Iran, Indian states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu have had similar declines of fertility without one child policy. Although 76% of Chinese supported the policy in 2008,[2] it is controversial outside of China.
On 29 October 2015, it was reported that the existing law would be changed to a two-child policy, citing a statement from the Communist Party of China. The new law became effective from 1 January 2016[3], following its passage in the standing committee of the National People's Congress on 27 December 2015.

- It is vital that guide dogs want to work, and enjoying doing it. After all, we can't force them to take responsibility for a person's safety. From an early age, guide dog puppies are taught that working is fun. They are given "life rewards" for good behaviour, which can be anything from going for a ride in the car, going to the park, or playing. Anything really that the puppy enjoys! These motivational methods of training create well taught, happy dogs that are more than willing to work. They enjoy thinking for themselves and problem solving though situations.
Play time also helps to build strong relationships with the dog and their handler. They learn to trust and have fun with one another, becoming lifelong friends. When they get to retirement age (at 11 years) they are often adopted into their handler's family, or go to another home. There they get to enjoy the rest of their life as the beloved family pet.

- The UK's vote to exit the European Union, Donald Trump's ascendancy to the US presidency and his appeal to the unemployed voters in what was once America's industrial heartland, are part of the backlash to globalisation, signalling an end to the era of laissez-faire economics.
The Morrison Government, in the space of a few weeks, has thrown a large part of its ideology out the window.
The Reserve Bank cuts interest rates to a record low and announces a quantitative easing program for the first time in its history to help prevent a coronavirus-driven recession.
It's been forced to recognise that survival is more important than surpluses, that markets don't always operate efficiently and in the best interests of society and that, occasionally, government intervention in the economy on a grand scale is vital.
The speed at which this transformation has taken place is nothing short of breathtaking, and for many — including business and workers — entirely welcome.
...
According to Mr Shvets, there are only three possible outcomes. One is that central banks win; that an economic recovery allows them to withdraw their stimulus without collapsing asset prices like stocks and housing. Not much chance of that, he reckons.
The second is that governments take over, pick up the slack in jobs and cooperate with each other to solve global poverty and inequality. Slim chance.
The third is war. This, he argues, is the most likely and the least pleasant outcome.
Let's hope this time he's wrong.

America's problems are not intrinsic to liberal democracy. They are American failures. Above and beyond any single US problem is the system that is supposed to fix problems – its political system.
When a country's political system fails, its problem-solving mechanism fails. The US today is in such a poor state because its biggest problems never get solved – they just accumulate.
The dry tinder piles up. The dreadful race riots of the 1960s should have been a catalyst for fundamental reform but turned out to a premonition of race-based rage to come. As Serena Williams says: "The worst part is this is nothing new, it's just filmed."
The fact that the US is the only rich country to suffer declining life expectancy should have led to change in the underlying problems – deep inequality and ramshackle health care. Instead, the political system continues to enact tax cuts for the well-off and exploitative working conditions and threadbare social welfare for the poor. And health care? America's unique status as the only rich country without universal health care remains, in spite of Barack Obama's efforts.

- Millions of ordinary Americans are facing rising and unaffordable bills for running water, and risk being disconnected or losing their homes if they cannot pay, a landmark Guardian investigation has found.
Exclusive analysis of 12 US cities shows the combined price of water and sewage increased by an average of 80% between 2010 and 2018, with more than two-fifths of residents in some cities living in neighbourhoods with unaffordable bills.
In the first nationwide research of its kind, our findings reveal the painful impact of America's expanding water poverty crisis as aging infrastructure, environmental clean-ups, changing demographics and the climate emergency fuel exponential price hikes in almost every corner of the US.
America's growing water affordability crisis comes as the Covid-19 pandemic underlines the importance of access to clean water. The research shows that rising bills are not just hurting the poorest but also, increasingly, working Americans.
"More people are in trouble, and the poorest of the poor are in big trouble," said Roger Colton, a leading utilities analyst, who was commissioned by the Guardian to analyse water poverty. "The data shows that we've got an affordability problem in an overwhelming number of cities nationwide that didn't exist a decade ago, or even two or three years ago in some cities."
Water bills exceeding 4% of household income are considered, for this analysis, unaffordable.
Colton's 88-page report is published today at the launch of a major project on America's water emergency by the Guardian, Consumer Reports and other partners.

- But what really sets SpaceX apart, and has made it a magnet for controversy, are its prices: As advertised on the company's Web site, a Falcon 9 launch costs an average of $57 million, which works out to less than $2,500 per pound to orbit.
https://www.airspacemag.com/space/is-spacex-changing-the-rocket-equation-132285884/
The Russian space agency Roscosmos has informed that while the market price of a SpaceX launch is estimated at around $60 million, NASA pays between 1.5 and 4 times for the same.
https://www.geospatialworld.net/news/russia-may-reduce-space-launch-price-by-30-pc-to-counter-spacex/
NASA's dependence on Russia to send humans to space has been expensive. A seat in a Soyuz capsule costs $86 million today, an increase of nearly 400 percent over about a decade and a half.

are most new car sales from government or corporate fleets

Guinea pigs thrive in groups of two or more; groups of sows or groups of one or more sows and a neutered boar are common combinations, but boars can sometimes live together.

- Traditionally our dollar has been significantly influenced by perceptions of conditions in China because of the impact on its demand for resources like iron ore, coal and LNG. We're seen as a resource economy and a safe proxy for direct exposure to China – when investors are comfortable having that exposure.
