Self Sufficient/Learning Golf Certification Program, Becoming a Better Golfer 3, and More

- this is a continuation of my other posts on Golf:
- I'd like to build a golf course to help self sufficiency. Something akin to finding the fastest way to learn golf but structured in a way that is more accessible to the average golfer? The course is designed to supplement not replace existing golf training programs. Initial theory would on combining theory with practice. Examples would include studying ball throwing/pitching sports such as baseball which focus in on weight shift to increase speed. In reality, I think the golf swing is about maintaining dynamic balance much like Segway devices to. If you try and push it it will try to maintain balance by another means. A golf swing is simply a variation of this which also allows for added energy via the individual in focus through primarily resonance type effects
- wonder whether it's possible to build a coaching certification test as well? A lot of programs out there have gone dormant, are expensive, etc... Golf teaching ability test to to look at aptitude, basic literacy/communication skills, golf general knowledge quiz to test interest, temperament for teaching, etc...

- you need to be able to master the following playing/teaching skills: distance control, horizontal and vertical dispersion, shot control, chipping, pitching, bunker, putting, swing types, rules, equipment,  background check, knowledge, play test
- there are some free or inexpensive courses if you want to teach/coach golf. They are very limited though. Some golf teaching courses provide free indemnity insurance as well. Note, that taking money doesn't necessarily force you into professional golfer status. Based on what I've read in some courses you're able to make up to around ~15K before you forfeit your amateur status

- learn to bend the rules (legitimately and within the rules of the game) as much as possible. This is what tour players do so I don't see why others shouldn't avail themselves of this opportunity as well. Good examples of this include clearing the surrounding area and cleaning the ball when its permitted, finding flat areas in the teeing area, etc... Equipment design variations have made things much more interesting in particular. One length iron sets mean you don't really have to adjust as much between your irons
- think through the science of golf. The reason why this is important is that science allows us to quantify and determine whether or not something makes sense and why it works. This applies across the board whether related to putting, increasing swing speed, etc... There are few ways of achieving faster speed that are universally accepted but if you think about it the closest analogy is of shot put. It works in terms of resonance and pendulum swing. The same ideas won't work for everyone

- passing the rules exam isn't that difficult. Passing it well is the only question. Tricky questions regularly

- golf is a game of misses. If you become too exacting you'll become overly neurotic. Ironically, this can cause you to become yippy. One player who is supposedly like this is Danny Lee, a former world number one amateur player who regularly needs his coach to pull him back into the normal world
PGA Golfer Danny Lee Drives His Swing Coach Insane
- older equipment can actually cost more to maintain then newer equipment. Good example of this is shoes and drivers. Very pricey to get larger thread spikes for older shoes now and get reshafts for older drivers which don't have interchangeable shafts. Learn to exploit modern golf equipment. Many players have a problem set of shots that they need to deal with regularly. If you can seal out certain bad shots or one side of the course using equipment go for it especially if you are time limited and don't have time to practice. The general consensus seems to be the heavier or stiffer your equipment the more accurate but shorter things will be
15 Year Old Driver – Taylormade R510TP vs. M3
1998 Golf Ball Vs 2018 Golf Ball (20 Year Test)
- understand how psychology plays a role in equipment. A lot of better players prefer compact clubheads (for whatever reason). If you have a preference and it works for you go for it. Club fitters can't account for every single possible scenario and or personality type
“After extensive in-house research with varying head sizes, the findings revealed the theory of “aim small, miss small” was validated by many of the highly skilled players in the test, who produced tighter stat areas when hitting the more compact head.”
- you need to make a concious decision between distance and accuracy at some point. If you examine long drive versus normal golf technique the two methods are very different. When long drivers play golf they're style of play is also completely different. Find a balance and figure out what works best for you
- lots of people have trouble seeing golf balls. In fact, sometimes I've lost provisional only to find my original ball in the middle of the fairway. This obviously gets frustrating. Get fluorescent golf balls or paint your golf balls if this is the case. Bonus is that it helps to identify where you hit the ball on your clubface as well. The only potential downside is that it may change the aerodynamics of your golf balls and shorten their flight (dimples generally increase ball flight distance)?

- practice/train like you play/compete. It just grooves things to the point whereby you don't feel any pressure/difference anymore when you enter competitions. Understand when you play well/badly and try to replicate the best set of conditions all the time

- small problems in putting and chipping are often similar in the full swing. A good example is the following. Coming down during high speed/tempo is a natural problem due to centrifugal force during short game as well as longer game shots
- Do what makes sense. If I take a too short backswing I know that intuitively I will try to make up for it elsewhere. I know I need a long enough backswing to generate power but short enough to maintain control
- Do what works. Sometimes I chip with my weight from the back foot, front foot, or balanced depending on the situation. I change the ball position of course but I know that I can do this through experience. One key aspect of golf is consistency. Practice all kinds of shots and you'll know what's viable in particular conditions and not. A good example of this is the following. It was said that Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Vijay Singh, etc... all relied on leg drive for power. However, you'll find out that using this style of swing on courses where undulating fairways is common is unworkable
- once upon a time I believed in the concept of learning the basics, then getting fitted. I now believe in finding out what's most natural and exploiting that via continual experimentation with equipment and technique. This is aided through adjustable equipment, demo days and cheap access/source of equipment such as eBay. Experience tells me that weight and length are the most obvious and biggest factors when it comes to club fitting whether it's for woods, irons, wedges, or putters. This sounds obvious but check you're apparel as well. Shoes that don't fit well can exacerbate swing flaws if they don't provide you with adequate traction and balance and clothing which diminishes your feel for your golf swing can equally have a disastrous impact

- understand advice you get from coaches and that you can't take all advice. Much of it is often incompatible. Know how to filter this to maximise the benefits of whatever information you may receive. Good examples of this include the following. I was told to shorten my backswing, turn around my shoulders more, get wider, etc... Using this information in the wrong way resulted in more problems then they solved
- you don't need others to help you improve but it does help
- putting sounds simple. In reality, it's a bit more complicated then you think because of environmental variations such as green undulation, speed, wind, etc...
- you need to learn how to read greens (Aimpoint is the exact opposite of Eyelinegolf's True Roll system. Aimpoint emphasises speed over direction while Aimpoint seems to do the opposite. Tour Roll aims to have perfect speed while David Pelz aims to get the ball 18 inches past the hole). It sounds simple especially if you're a new to the game. The better you can read greens the less yippy you'll be (based on what I've heard and researched most people who are yippy are basically second guessing themselves. It's not because of some physical or mental health issue). Basically, if it's uphill you'll have need more speed, downhill you'll need less speed, within really short distances you can almost ignore break, etc... You need time on the practice green to figure this out. Despite what some people may think it's not all about "the swing"
HOLE MORE PUTTS WITH AimPoint Golf
Plenty of putts are missed before the putterhead ever moves. Why? Because of misreads. It's difficult to quantify the importance of green-reading -- since a putt's break depends in part on how hard it's hit -- but new research I've done with Columbia business school Ph.D. student Dongwook Shin indicates that about 40 percent of the strokes Tour pros lose on the greens is due to green-reading errors. (Directional mis-hits account for 40 percent and distance errors for 20 percent.)
Here's roughly how AimPoint Express works. The golfer stands facing the hole and, using the feelings in his feet, estimates the steepness of the right-to-left or left-to-right slope on a 0 to 7 scale. He holds up that many fingers, with one edge of the extended fingers aligned with the center of the hole. The other edge of his fingers serves as a guide for the putt's starting line from which the ball will break. That's what Scott's doing (left).

While not as precise as the original AimPoint system, Sweeney says that golfers sink more putts with Express because it's simpler. "Golfers can hit good putts because they aren't worried about the aim being wrong," he told me. Scott has seconded that sentiment, adding that putting has been fun since the stress and indecision of the read are gone. Everybody knows that a confident stroke is a better stroke.
- there are lots of putting resources out there. Fiddle around with everything. This is especially the case if you're something who can learn/adapt fast
- if you become too enamoured by a system there's a chance you'll become OCD and become dependent on the system. Keep this in mind and the randomness of golf in general
- the first place to start experimenting with putting is the grip itself. If you really struggle with keeping the face square at impact this is the place to start. There are all sorts of grips. Don't be afraid to go unorthodox. Notice Brooks Koepka's putting grip? Not normal but very effective
TOP 5 PUTTING GRIPS _ ME AND MY GOLF
golf putting grip
golf grip types
- physical size grip can change things. Bryce Dechambeau uses a larger size grip based on the idea that bigger grips will cause player's hands to be less active through impact
HIT LONGER DRIVES WITH NEW GOLF GRIPS
- rhythm and tempo isn't often thought of as a big thing in golf. For those whose fundamentals are down it's basically one of the few problems that remain. It's the glue that helps ensure that your shots go the distance and direction you intend for them to go. Use music, clocks, anything as a basis through which to keep things in check
- I obviously beleive in using setup as the basis through which to kick everything off. The following all impact one another (just think about it): ball position, weight distribution, spinal tilt and bend, length of backswing and follow through, etc...
- maximise strengths and minimise weaknesses. This pertains to everything from technique, to equipment, to style of play, power and accuracy generation, etc...
ARE GOLF CLUBS ALL THE SAME
- even ultra penal golf courses force a particle style of play because they ultimately force particular shots out of you and you lose your sense of creativity over time?
- deliberate position based/robogolf teaching can make things worse because you aren't attacking the source/core of the problem. You're just trying to make things look right even if the new method of moving things around may make things more awkward/difficult to achieve
- for a lot of players there's sometimes a limit/plateau to their play. Your ability to transcend this is what will ultimately determine how far you go
- there's a point where the line between amateur and professional golf blurs. Amateurs who practice as much as professionals and vice-versa. You just have to learn how to deal with it if you intend to become a better player and compete against them
- understand that there can be more then one way to fix a problem. You can end up with a reverse pivot via pure setup, change ball position, stance width, etc... or just change things the more conventional way in mid-swing
HOW TO PUTT THE GOLF BALL STRAIGHT
How To Use Your Wrists in the Golf Swing
- if people's tendencies are so different, how can there be fundamentals?
- try to negate as many problems from practice as much as possible. Tee up in the middle/straight in practice facilities so that your alignment doesn't fall by the wayside. Never practice without a target, it just grooves a swing that goes everywhere. Golf is ultimately a target sport played in 3D but most often quantified in 2D
- some things can only be learnt off of grass rather then mats. I only figured out how to hit my lob wedge silly distances (110m+ for a lob wedge) off of grass. Hit it lower with less spin is the easiest way. It comes out lower but seems to travel further
- don't try to reinvent the wheel. In academic you're required to do literature reviews prior to writing an essay/report on a particular topic. Do the same here. Whether you're entirely self taught or trying something new you're better off checking out whether or not someone else has tried what you've done and has outlined what has worked and what hasn't. It'll save you a bit of time. Good example is the following. I suffer from sync issues from time to time which results in blocks out to the right. I mainly deal with it by pre-turning by left hip inwards at address. Hogan dealt with it by closing his stance though which allowed him to turn more on longer shots
Jason Day Vs. Rory Mcilroy Golf Swing _ Complete Analysis
- if you don't have golf analysis systems in place you need to be self aware (check my previous posts on game improvement and structured practice as used by College players and better players). Notice the things that you do good when things go well and the bad things when things don't go so well so that you can improve. Best book on this that I've seen is Inner Game of Golf
golf swing analysis app
- use every free and cheap resource at your disposal. The Internet has provided us with an incredible resource and since heaps of people are trying to market themselves they place heaps of good resources free on the Internet. Use it. Learn from it. Golf coaches often have a presence online (social media, videos, podcasts, swing sequences, books, and so on...) that you can learn from whether that be their style of coaching, their methods, reputation, pricing, etc... Normally, they'll give discounts on bulk purchases of lessons

- if something sounds suss in golf it probably is. I don't think some of the supposed fakes on eBay are actual fakes. They may not have passed QC for some reason or may have simply been stolen from the assembly line which is the reason why they seem to perform so similiary and look so perfect in comparison to their counterparts that are purchased from retail. This practice is similar to what happens in the ICT world (think of CPU chips, hard drives, etc...) from time to time
- you need some form of fitness and core strength to allow you to practice enough and provide you with a basis for generating more clubhead speed
- no matter what people say golf isn't an exact sport. You can't bring training aides on to the golf course so you can't have perfect alignment, setup, etc... each and every time. Part of the time you need to be able to make up for any problems that you may experience out on course from time to time. Somtimes pure talent needs to make up for lack of practice, coaching expertise, or other temporal deficiencies
- there are many obvious problems with with golf which make it difficult justify financially. I think the obvious choice is to use hyper distance limited golf balls which travel 30%-50% distance of existing golf balls. Allows for much smaller golf courses and quicker game time. Since the balls will likely compress more it will make the game safer for everyone as well. The irony is that can create more opportunities for shots on existing courses as well
50% distance limit golf balls
MANY Australian golf clubs are battling to stay afloat. Recent research from within the golf industry estimates that around 50% of the 1600 Australian golf clubs are in some level of financial trouble, primarily due to the decline in club memberships.
- there's a time for practice and a time for competition. Competing forces you into using what you know best which mightn't what is best over the long term
- you need a bare minimum level of distance and accuracy to play the game. Notice how long drivers and normal golfers have radically different swings?
- lots of methods besides spreadsheets to track your statistics
golf statistic program
- at some point you need to decide on a coach, a set of techniques, etc... Take notes. Lock it down. That said, golf is an evolving game. The longer you stay at it the more you realise that there is more to learn

- “I was fortunate enough to have success come to me and realize that didn’t change anything. So I was really blessed because, at that point in your life, it’s either a disappointment because it’s not a remedy and you either put a needle in your arm, a gun in your mouth or you live life as a victim, and I’m not cut out of that,” he said. “So I decided that I would spend my life and my time on self-exploration and trying to make myself a better person and seeing where that was going to take me.”

South Korea is the real victim of the deadlock in nuclear negotiations between the United States and North Korea, says an analyst, adding that Seoul is concerned at the heightening tensions in Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has fired a barrage of short-range missiles towards the Sea of Japan, in first such action in over a year amid deadlocked nuclear talks with the United States.

The North "fired multiple rounds of unidentified missiles from its east coast town of Wonsan in the northeastern direction between 9:06 a.m. and 9:27 a.m. today," South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency quoted the country’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying in a Saturday statement.

The projectiles flew about 70-100 kilometers over the East Sea, also known as Sea of Japan, before landing in the sea, the brief statement said, adding that South Korean and US authorities “are analyzing details of the missiles.”

“So far Sarah Sanders [White House Press Secretary] has said that they are just following it closely. In terms of the message being sent, I think it is very clear. There is a lot of frustration on their side because they thought that the entire second meeting [with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un] was a fiasco. The letter that Donald Trump delivered saying that you need to give up all of your nuclear weapons as a prelude to any further negotiations was not received well. Remember last week he was meeting with Putin. I think he was trying to send a very clear message that what he wants is security guarantees,” Einar Tangen, author and columnist told Press TV in an interview on Saturday.

“Unfortunately the real victim here is South Korea because they have been the ones who have been moving forward with North Korea. They have already issued a statement saying they are extremely concerned at this, they don’t want to heighten tensions and unfortunately this kind of after effect between Trump and Kim is that it is derailing the entire process,” he added.

Trump and Kim met at a historic summit for the first time in June last year in Singapore, where they agreed to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Subsequent diplomacy between the two sides, however, made little progress, mainly because Washington refused to lift its crippling sanctions.

Washington has refused to offer any sanctions relief in return for several unilateral steps already taken by North Korea. Pyongyang, on the other hand, has suspended its missile and nuclear testing, demolished at least one nuclear test site, and agreed to allow international inspectors into a missile engine test facility.
- One of the many hopes raised by the recent détente efforts of South Korean president Moon Jae-in and President Donald Trump is the political confederation if not eventual unification of the two Koreas.

While full-blown unification is a pro forma goal of both Korean polities, many lesser steps and stages have been considered over the years. Frequently a confederation of some kind is mooted. This covering institution would follow China’s ostensible approach to Hong Kong and Taiwan—one country, two systems. In a “Greater Koryo Confederation,” the North and South would retain their own internal political systems but try to approach international affairs jointly as well as share resources. Over time, integration would increase, eventually leading to unity as suspicions between the two sides faded away.

This is very much the thinking of the South Korean Left, from which Moon has come. The South Korean Right still holds to the “Germany model”— North Korea collapses of its own dysfunctions and/or external pressure and is simply absorbed into a greater Republic of Korea.
- Vulnerability is not weak. It’s strong.
It’s the guy who approaches the girl and risks rejection.
It’s the comedian who tries the joke with the risk of it not being laughed at.
It’s the entrepreneur who tries to build a brand on social using video and risks people laughing at them.
It’s the speaker on stage who opens up and tells their truth on how they don’t have their own shit together.
It’s the salesperson who prospects that stranger who may tell them to fuck off.
#Vulnerability is not soft. It’s our most accurate measure of courage.

- For Latvia, in particular, the authors advice to enhance the size and capabilities of its national guard and reserve forces and improve whole-of society resilience efforts. Just after report’s release, Latvian Minister of Defence Pubriks announced the planned snap checks of combat readiness. The Defence Ministry also wants to prompt residents’ involvement in the comprehensive defense system, so they know what they must do in order to defend their country. A booklet with all the necessary information for residents will be released in the fall, the booklet will also be available online, added Pabriks.

These all steps should be considered as the attempts to influence Latvian authorities and population and to force them to grand the U.S. the possibility to do what it thinks is better fo Latvia. The U.S. wants to create a condition under which the small Baltic States cannot exist or behave by themselves.

The key recommendation given by the authors of the report is “the United States, other NATO allies and partners, and the European Union could take further concrete steps to support the Baltic countries in developing their total defense and unconventional warfare capabilities.” And they will take these steps even if Latvia is not ready to accept their help.
