- In this post, we'll be looking at medical surgical procedures. It's to help with some other work/research that I've been working on. If you feel nauseated or feel that the live surgical videos are unclear, stick to the animations and textbooks (you can often get old surgical hardcopy textbooks in Op-Shops or being given away for free in online markets if you didn't know. The only other ways that I know how to get hardcopy access to them is by going into hospital or University libraries. - Sputnik: Supporters of MMT have conceded that only certain types of countries, the US, UK, Japan, Australia, can print money as they see fit. Is it a coincidence that most of the countries they list are powerful states that other countries must do business with?
Michael Roberts: It is no coincidence. Governments may control the unit of currency (dollars, pounds, yen, or pesos) but they do no control what it can buy. The strongest economies in production, investment and trade can sustain a strong currency relative to other currencies.  
In the case of the US, because the dollar is the main international currency, the US government can create money without suffering too much of a decline in the purchasing power of the dollar or in relation to other currencies. But even with the dollar, it is not immune to debasement and depreciation (note after the removal of the dollar's link to gold in 1971, the 'value' of the dollar relative to other currencies with string economies has declined).  
In weak economies, the national currencies are always under downward pressure and printing money would accelerate the process, leading eventually to hyper inflation.
Sputnik: Venezuela ostensibly has its own sovereign currency, as does Argentina. But when both of these countries fell foul of the US, and in latter's case defaulted on its loans, they suffered capital flight and serious economic difficulties. Under MMT they should have been able to print their way out of economic crisis. Why didn't it work out this way?
Michael Roberts: As above, if money only represents value and does not create value, then just printing more without any improvement in production, investment or employment would debase the currency, raise inflation and lead to capital flight.  If a country has to pay its international debts in dollars, then default would emerge.
Sputnik: Does the US government's ability to print money in large consequences depend on other countries around the world's desire and need to make use of US dollars?
Michael Roberts: It depends, first on the strength of the US economy in productivity to compete in trade.  But the US has extra support for the dollar. The US is the main financial centre globally so capital flows are usually conducted in dollars (two-thirds of flows) and the dollar is the currency that countries keep most of their reserves in. So the dollar has a unique role.

- After years of talking about abandoning the US dollar, Russia and China are doing it for real. In the first quarter of 2020, the share of the dollar in trade between the countries fell below 50 percent for the first time.

China's top representative office in Hong Kong has condemned the US' "unreasonable meddling" in the Asian financial hub.
The Hong Kong Liaison Office released a statement on Wednesday, describing as "gangster logic and bullying" US President Donald Trump's move to strip Hong Kong of preferential trade treatment and impose sanctions on the semi-autonomous Chinese city.
The office said the sanctions, which Trump ordered Tuesday on the pretext of the new national security law in Hong Kong, would not have a significant impact on the special administrative region, but, instead, damage the US' own interests.

- The US' decision to remove sanctions exemption for the two pipelines under construction to deliver gas to Europe and Turkey is a textbook example of "unfair competition" through political means, Moscow has said.
The move, which allows the further sanctioning of Russian natural gas projects, has clearly shown the "weakness of the American system," Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.
"This is the use of political pressure for sake of unfair competition," Zakharova stated. "Except for raw power, they don't have any effective tools."
Earlier in the day, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the decision to lift a provision that exempted the pipelines from the 2017 anti-Russian sanctions package, and threatened investors with consequences.
"It's a clear warning to companies that aiding and abetting Russian malign influence projects will not be tolerated. Get out now or risk the consequences," Pompeo said.
The legislation, known officially as the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), has been designed to 'punish' Russia for its alleged activities, such as a claimed interference with the 2016 US presidential election.
Washington has been particularly displeased with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, repeatedly claiming the multinational business project is actually a sneaky Russian tool to gain political sway in Europe.
The US itself has been actively lobbying European countries to buy its liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead of Russian pipeline gas. While American LNG has, unsurprisingly, turned out to be significantly pricier than the Russian product, the US insists that Western countries should still buy it, and even in all seriousness called it "freedom gas."

- A part fell off a U.S. F-15 fighter jet while it was flying over Okinawa Prefecture on Aug. 4, according to the Okinawa Defense Bureau.
The bureau on Aug. 5 said that the U.S. Kadena Air Base, which straddles Kadena and nearby areas in the prefecture, reported the incident to the bureau in the late afternoon on Aug. 4.
The air base informed the bureau that a part measuring about 18 centimeters and weighing some 3.6 kilograms dropped off the jet at around 10:30 a.m. while it passed over the main island of Okinawa or waters off the island.
The initial Aug. 4 report of the incident did not say which air base the jet belonged to, according to the bureau, but on Aug. 5 it learned the fighter was attached to the Kadena base.
Still, it was uncertain where the part landed.
The bureau said U.S. military authorities explained that the part landed "about 96 kilometers in the east-southeast of the Kadena Air Base if it fell on the sea and along National Road No. 58 if it fell on the island."
The bureau notified the prefectural government and municipalities that host the base of the incident after receiving the report from U.S. military authorities.
There have been numerous incidents of parts falling from U.S. military aircraft in the prefecture. In February, an FA-18 fighter jet from U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, lost its cover on a fuel tank while flying over waters off the Kadena base.

- A cat detained at Sri Lanka's main prison while carrying drugs and cell phone SIM cards has escaped.
The feline was detected by jail intelligence officials on August 1 at the high-security Welikada Prison, a police official said.
Nearly two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip were found in a small plastic bag tied around the cat's neck.
According to police, the cat was trained by drug traffickers, who were also a part of the same cartel that was caught using an eagle to smuggle drugs in a suburb of Colombo.
Investigators were hoping the cat could lead them to the smugglers' den but the felonious feline escaped on Sunday (local time) from its prison room when the guards came in to feed it, the Aruna newspaper reported.
Chandana Ekanayake, the Commissioner of the Department of Prisons, told The Indian Express since the pandemic inmates had been going to extreme lengths to smuggle narcotics as visitors are no longer allowed to the prison.
The prison had reported an increase in incidents of people throwing small packets of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in recent weeks.
Sri Lanka is battling a major drug problem with some anti-narcotics detectives also implicated in selling confiscated drugs.
The eagle was just one of accomplices associated with the underworld crime boss Angoda Lokka, who reportedly died in July.
Authorities have said they will not search for the for the feline delinquent.
