Impending Global Economic Depression/Recession?, Random Stuff, and More

- if you haven't noticed life feels difficult for many people of late and while the data points to this the news doesn't? We'll try to dig into this to see what's happening? We'll focus in on things that are hard to lie about but easy to check/verify to confirm what's going on which is something. Economic intelligence analysts do this often but it's a difficult/imperfect science. It still feels like best guesses much of the time?

oura ring open source software
AI Overview
Several open-source software projects and alternative tools exist for managing, viewing, and bypassing subscription paywalls or syncing data from the Oura Ring:
Popular Open-Source Oura Ring Projects
• Cracked Oura: A free, open-source desktop app that lets users access Oura health data without a monthly subscription. It works legally by exporting your local data via Oura's native data export/portability policies (such as GDPR) into a local SQLite database. It builds dashboards for Sleep, Readiness, and Activity scores, and features an experimental local LLM AI health analyst. Available via GitHub - EIrno/Cracked-Oura.
• open_oura: An open-source Rust toolkit and Python research bench designed for local, cloud-free syncing, storing, and analyzing Oura Ring data via reverse-engineered Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocols. It retrieves device info, battery status, live heart rate, SpO2, and history event streams locally without needing an official Oura account (though proprietary PyTorch models are excluded). Available via GitHub - Th0rgal/open_oura.
• Open Wearables: A self-hosted, open-source platform that normalizes and integrates wearable data—including Oura, Whoop, Polar, and Strava—into user-controlled cloud storage or Docker instances.
• Oura API / Python Clients: Various open-source wrappers (such as official/community API v2 Python clients and integrations like Gladys Assistant) allow read-only data access for sleep, readiness, and activity scores to use in self-hosted home automation or personal dashboards.
If you're looking for something specific, let me know:
• Are you trying to bypass the subscription paywall?
• Do you want to self-host a dashboard of your health data?
• Are you looking for direct Bluetooth/local syncing without internet?

AI Overview
U.S. retail and food services sales reached an adjusted advance estimate of $745.0 billion in September 2026, marking a 0.8% increase month-over-month and a 6.3% increase year-over-year according to the U.S. Census Bureau Monthly Retail Trade Report.
Recent Sales Trends & Performance
• Monthly Momentum: Retail sales rose by 0.8% in September 2026, building on an upwardly revised 1.3% jump in August 2026.
• Annual Growth: Total retail and food services sales in September 2026 were up 6.3% compared to September 2025.
• Quarterly Trend: For the third-quarter period (July–September 2026), total sales tracked 5.5% higher than the same period in the previous year.
• E-Commerce Expansion: Second-quarter 2026 e-commerce sales hit $329.5 billion (not seasonally adjusted), marking a 9.4% increase from Q1 2026 and accounting for 17.1% of total retail sales.
Sector Breakdown & Key Drivers (September 2026)
Month-over-month performance varied across retail categories, led by a notable 6.4% surge in gasoline station sales (driven by higher prices), followed by gains in furniture stores (+1.3%) and food services (+1.1%). Conversely, sectors like miscellaneous store retailers (-3.0%) and building materials (-0.6%) saw declines.
• Inflation & Core Trends: The headline monthly increase was heavily influenced by gasoline inflation; excluding gas, retail sales grew by 0.2%. Core retail sales edged up 0.1% following an August increase.
• Consumer Behavior: Consumers remain selective, utilizing promotions and steady wage growth to navigate elevated living costs.

finance are short long funds more successful then pure long funds
AI Overview
Long/short funds are not universally more successful than pure long (long-only) funds; whether one outperforms depends heavily on market conditions, the manager's skill, and costs.
How They Compare
• Bull Markets: Pure long funds usually outperform. When the overall stock market rises strongly, long-only portfolios capture 100% of the upside without the drag, cost, or potential losses of short positions.
• Bear or Volatile Markets: Long/short funds have the advantage. By shorting overvalued stocks or hedging market exposure, they can cushion losses or even generate positive returns when markets drop.
• Costs and Fees: Long/short funds are more complex to manage. They carry significantly higher expense ratios (often 1.10% to over 2.00% compared to ~0.40% for standard equity funds), which eats into net performance.
• The Drag of Shorting: Short selling is difficult. Stock prices can rise indefinitely (meaning short positions have unlimited risk), and borrowing fees plus interest drag down returns during extended bull cycles. As highlighted in A Wealth of Common Sense, long/short strategies have historically lagged pure long equities over long periods due to high fees, borrowing costs, and strong upward market momentum.
If you'd like to narrow this down, let me know:
• What time horizon or market cycle you are planning for?
• Are you looking at mutual funds, ETFs, or hedge funds?

is berkshire hathaway a good investment in bear markets
AI Overview
Yes, Berkshire Hathaway is generally considered a strong defensive investment during bear markets, though it is not completely immune to market downturns.
Reddit
·r/BerkshireHathaway
 +1
Key Advantages in Bear Markets
Massive Cash Reserves: Berkshire holds over $350 billion in cash and short-term investments. This provides a massive financial cushion and gives management the firepower to make opportunistic, discounted acquisitions or large share buybacks when other companies are starved for capital.
Seeking Alpha
 +2
Defensive Business Model: Its core operating subsidiaries—spanning insurance (like GEICO), energy, railroads, and consumer staples—tend to generate steady, down-to-earth cash flows regardless of economic conditions.
Yahoo Finance
 +1
Lower Volatility: Berkshire historically exhibits a lower beta (around 0.71) than the broader S&P 500, meaning it typically experiences less dramatic price swings during market corrections.
Reddit
·r/stocks
Value-Oriented Portfolio: Unlike the broader market or tech-heavy indexes, Berkshire avoids heavy concentration in high-flying growth or speculative tech stocks that often get hit hardest in a downturn.
Reddit
·r/BerkshireHathaway

Risks and Limitations
Not a True Short Hedge: Berkshire is still positively correlated with the broader stock market over the long run. When major indexes plunge, Berkshire's stock price usually falls as well—even if it occasionally drops less than the S&P 500 or Nasdaq.
Reddit
·r/stocks
Underperformance in Bull Markets: Because of its conservative nature and massive size, Berkshire often lags behind the S&P 500 during roaring bull markets.

Leadership Transition: Following Warren Buffett's step-aside and the transition to CEO Greg Abel, some investors watch closely to ensure the company's capital allocation discipline remains steady through market stress.

which international share markets are correlated to the us share markets
AI Overview
Major international stock markets show varying degrees of correlation with U.S. share markets (such as the S&P 500), ranging from high positive correlations in developed regions to moderate or mixed ties in Asia and emerging markets.
Correlation Levels with U.S. Markets (S&P 500)
According to market data and index correlation studies (via TradingEconomics), different international indices exhibit distinct relationships with the U.S. Index 500:
International Index / Country Representative Index Correlation with U.S. Index 500 Nature of Correlation
Japan Nikkei 225 (JP225) 0.69 Strong positive correlation (driven by tech trends, exports, and global sentiment)
Canada S&P/TSX Composite (TSX) 0.35 Moderate positive correlation (tied through close economic and trade integration)
Brazil Bovespa (IBOVESPA) 0.25 Low-to-moderate positive correlation
Russia MOEX 0.20 Low positive correlation
China Shanghai Composite 0.14 Low positive correlation (largely influenced by domestic economic drivers)
Germany DAX (DE40) 0.13 Low positive correlation (though tied closely to broader European indices like the EU50 at 0.92)
Eurozone / Europe Euro Stoxx 50 (EU50) 0.10 Low direct correlation to U.S., though deeply integrated with regional European markets
India BSE Sensex / Nifty 50 -0.24 to strong short-term tie Mixed; while historical statistical matrices show periodic divergence or inverse daily prints, Indian IT and financial sectors frequently open based on U.S. overnight cues.
United Kingdom FTSE 100 (GB100) -0.32 Varies by index composition; heavy multinational and commodity weightings in the FTSE can decouple its daily moves from U.S. domestic tech-heavy indices.
Australia ASX 200 -0.02 (statistical matrix) / high daily opening influence Statistically near-zero over broader blended matrices, though the opening level of the ASX is frequently led by the prior night's performance on Wall Street.
Hong Kong Hang Seng (HK50) -0.26 Negative/low statistical correlation in baseline index models, though sensitive to global liquidity and U.S.–China macro flows.
Key Drivers of International Correlation
• Trade and Supply Chain Links: Asian markets like South Korea (KOSPI) and Taiwan are heavily tied to U.S. technology cycles, particularly the artificial intelligence and semiconductor buildouts funded by American mega-caps.
• Overnight Cues and Sentiment: Markets in the Asia-Pacific region (such as Japan's Nikkei 225 and Australia's ASX 200) often look to Wall Street's close as a primary directional indicator for their morning sessions.
• Macroeconomic Policies: Global interest rate decisions by the U.S. Federal Reserve heavily influence cross-border capital flows, currency valuations, and risk appetite across both developed and emerging markets.
• Global Index Concentration: Broader global benchmarks like the MSCI World Index feature heavy U.S. weightings (around 62% to 75% depending on the specific index scope), meaning global equity movements are increasingly dominated by U.S. market action.
Would you like to explore diversification strategies using specific international ETFs or look deeper into how currency movements affect non-U.S. returns?
https://tradingeconomics.com/stocks/correlations
- not sure how deep this depression/recession going to be? The worry that I have is that if you look around multiple parts of the global economy seem to be breaking at the moment? It points towards a global issues rather then regional. This may take time to resolve itself

which share markets have lost more then 10% in last half of this year
AI Overview
Several major global stock markets and indices have experienced steep double-digit declines or severe corrections exceeding 10% during the second half of 2026:
• Brazil (Bovespa Index): Plunged nearly 17% in a single session following the surprise re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and concerns over fiscal deficits.
• China (SSE Composite Index): Dropped past an 11% decline from its mid-year levels amid broader regional selling pressure and economic headwinds.
• South Korea and Indonesia: Experienced severe market downturns with pullbacks surpassing 40% from yearly highs during the broader global autumn sell-off.
• Japan (Nikkei 225): Hit double-digit drawdowns exceeding 10% from its mid-year baseline amid waves of international equity volatility.

Brazil’s Ibovespa Index crashed over 10% in a single day following the unexpected re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Major Market Declines in 2026
• Brazil (Ibovespa): Plummeted over 10% at the opening bell on October 26, 2026, triggering an automatic 30-minute circuit breaker on the B3 Stock Exchange and closing down nearly 14%. Investors reacted negatively due to fears of expanded public spending and growing fiscal deficits under a left-wing administration.
• US Tech and Growth Indexes (Year-to-Date / Peak Drawdowns): While major benchmarks like the S&P 500 and Dow Jones have stayed in positive territory overall for 2026, several sub-segments and tech-heavy benchmarks experienced double-digit pullbacks or year-to-date losses:
• Nasdaq 100: Down roughly 13.68% year-to-date amid a rotation away from mega-cap AI stocks.
• Russell 2000 (IWM): Down roughly 11.11% year-to-date.
• Individual Tech Leaders: High-profile names like Tesla (off ~12% to 26% from peaks) and Nvidia (down ~13% from highs) experienced sharp double-digit corrections during 2026 tech-sector turbulence.

how long does a recession usually last
AI Overview
Recessions generally last between 6 and 18 months, with an average duration of about 11 months in modern economies like the United States.
General Timeframes
• Average duration: Since World War II, most recessions have lasted roughly 11 months (or about 10.4 months if you exclude major outliers).
• Shortest recessions: The COVID-19 pandemic-induced downturn in 2020 lasted just 2 months.
• Longest/Severe recessions: The Great Recession (2007–2009) lasted 18 to 19 months, while the Great Depression (1929–1933) dragged on for 43 to 45 months.
• Australian context: According to the Reserve Bank of Australia, advanced economies typically experience a technical recession every 7 to 10 years, though durations vary widely based on government intervention and central bank policy.
Recovery vs. Recession
The length of the contraction phase is only part of the story:
• Economic recovery: While the contraction (the recession itself) might last less than a year, returning employment, business investment, and household wealth to pre-recession levels often takes several additional years.
• Per capita downturns: Even when an economy avoids a "technical recession" (two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth), high population growth can mask a per capita recession, where economic output per person shrinks over extended periods.

how long does an economic depression usually last
AI Overview
Economic depressions typically last anywhere from 3 to 4 years up to a decade or more to fully recover, making them much longer and more severe than standard recessions.

Duration of Major Depressions
The Great Depression (1929–1939): The initial economic contraction in the United States lasted 43 months (from August 1929 to March 1933), but the broader social and economic depression—including high unemployment and output shortfalls—persisted throughout the entire decade, only ending with the onset of World War II in 1939 (or into the early 1940s).
Charles Schwab
 +1
The Long Depression (1873–1896): Lasting roughly 23 years, this period was characterized by waves of sluggish growth and price deflation across Europe and the United States, according to the Wikipedia Economic Depression Overview.
The Australian 1930s Great Depression: Economic collapse peaked around 1932 with unemployment reaching 32%, and it took Australia nearly a decade to fully recover, as documented by the National Museum of Australia.
How Depressions Compare to Recessions
Recessions: Usually last between 6 to 18 months (averaging about 11 months in the U.S. post-WWII and generally under 12–18 months in Australia), defined typically by a drop in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over two or more quarters.
International Monetary Fund | IMF

Depressions: There is no strict, universal mathematical rule, but economists generally classify a downturn as a depression if real GDP drops by more than 10% or if severe economic stress and high unemployment persist for 3 or more years.

If you'd like, I can share more details on what causes a recession to turn into a depression or how central banks try to prevent them.
- I didn't really understand how economics and politics inter-sected but I've learnt much about it watching the news and how it impacts markets? The wrong political party/leader can impact the way the markets operate 50-60% in a single day based on what I've seen? Hence, the reason why electrion rigging and coups are so important so that you can alter the board to work in your economic favour? There are no major national elections for the rest of 2026 so limited options here?

Random Quotes:
- Jack Weis has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Ivy League powerhouse Princeton. His research on ice formation was cited by the Nobel committee.
Now he can’t even get a food-prep job with a company that sells frozen crab cakes.
Since graduating in 2024, Weis has applied to more than 2,300 jobs and still hasn’t landed one, according to The Wall Street Journal.
He started with pharmaceutical science roles and national lab fellowships. When that didn’t work out, he widened his search to software engineering and eventually frozen crab prep.
Two years after finishing his doctorate, Jack Weis is living in his parents’ basement. “It’s quite surprising,” said his mom. “I don’t know how to put it together.”
His story reflects a frozen job market for college graduates. Economists call it a “low-hire, low-fire” environment, where workers stay put and openings stay scarce.
Long-term unemployment this summer hit its highest level in over a decade outside the pandemic, and AI screening tools are making it harder for applicants to reach a human.

- The U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School developed a scientific method to ensure their pilots could get shut-eye anytime, anywhere—even with gunfire in the background. The method is surprisingly effective: after six weeks of practice, 96% of pilots could fall asleep in two minutes or less.
Step 1️⃣: Relax in your seat.
Given the space constraints of a typical plane, the pilots were taught to sleep in a seated position. They put their feet flat on the ground while relaxing their hands in their laps.
Breathe slow, deep breaths while relaxing every muscle in your face and letting your forehead, cheeks, mouth, tongue, and jaw go limp.
Step 2️⃣: The Upper Body Drop
Next, let your shoulders drop as low as they can go, releasing the tension in your neck. Then, move to your arms. Start with your dominant side. If your bicep feels tight, tense it hard for a second and then let it drop like a dead weight. Move down to your forearm, then your hands and fingers. Repeat this on the other side.
Step 3️⃣: The Lower Body Release
Once your upper body is loose, exhale deeply to release any remaining tension in your chest. Then, move your focus to your legs. Tell your right thigh muscle to sink into the mattress (or chair). Move down to your calf, ankle, and foot. Repeat the process with your left leg until your limbs feel heavy and warm.
Step 4️⃣: The 10-Second Mind Clear
Now that your body is physically relaxed, the final hurdle is your brain. You need to stop the "thinking" process for just 10 seconds. Ackman suggests two methods to clear the static:
The Static Image: Visualize yourself lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but a clear blue sky above you. Hold that image.
The Mantra: If you struggle with visualization, repeat the words "Don't think, don't think, don't think" over and over for 10 seconds.
Once the body is relaxed and the mind is clear, the method dictates that sleep will follow almost instantly. While it takes practice to master, the results suggest it’s a skill worth learning. Learn more below. See less

- He was 25 the day the prison gate closed behind him.
He was 89 the day it opened again.
In June 2022, Kumamoto Prison released Sueo Inamura on parole after roughly 64 years inside — among the longest stretches anyone has ever served in Japan.
The Japan he came back to had no idea what to do with him, and he had no idea what to do with it.
His story starts in 1958, the same year Tokyo Tower went up.
Working at a factory in Saitama, he had been promised a permanent job that never materialized — so he attacked his boss with a sashimi knife and killed him.
Life sentence.
Barely six months later, inside Chiba Prison, he and another inmate stabbed a fellow prisoner to death.
Prosecutors wanted him hanged; the judge gave him a second life sentence instead.
For the next six decades he watched the world change on prison TVs and in magazines — but knowing about something and using it turned out to be two very different things.
Fresh out, he tried to buy a drink by folding a 1,000-yen bill in half and stuffing it into a vending machine.
When nothing dropped, he assumed the machine was broken.
He left with about 1.3 million yen, roughly $8,500, in wages from 64 years of prison labor.
He went in under Emperor Showa and came out under Reiwa — the entire Heisei era, all 30 years of it, happened while he was inside.

- Doctors have completed a landmark medical procedure by implanting a windpipe created entirely from a patient’s own cells. Because the tissue was biologically matched, the body accepted it as its own.
Unlike conventional transplants, the procedure required no donor organ and eliminated the need for lifelong immune-suppressing drugs. This removes one of the most dangerous long-term risks in transplant medicine.
The windpipe was created using a biodegradable scaffold seeded with the patient’s stem cells and grown under controlled conditions. Once implanted, the structure supported natural tissue development and function.
This case demonstrates how bioprinting can rebuild damaged organs rather than replace them. It opens new possibilities for treating severe airway injuries and congenital conditions.
Researchers say the success marks a broader shift toward personalized, rejection-free regenerative therapies. Similar approaches could eventually be applied to more complex organs.

- In 1986, a person with Down syndrome in Australia stayed at home. That was the norm.
Russell O'Grady was 18 when he walked into the McDonald's in Northmead, Sydney. He got there with help from Jobsupport, a program that found jobs for people with moderate intellectual disabilities. He started out packing party boxes. Over time, he took on other tasks, even in the kitchen.
He worked at the same location for 32 years. He retired in December 2018, at 50, to take care of his health.
What happened over those years can't fit into a contract. Courtney Purcell, his supervisor, said there were customers who came on purpose on Thursdays and Fridays to see him. Others wouldn't even come in if he wasn't on shift. His coworkers looked after him.
His father, Geoff, said people would stop him in the street to shake his hand. He also said the job had given him a different perspective on life. His brother Lindsey said Russell loved his job.
Gabrielle Bartlett, from Jobsupport, summed it up this way: they were pioneers in showing that people with moderate disabilities can contribute to the workforce.
Sometimes change doesn't begin with a law. It begins with someone opening a door, and with a place where they're waiting for you to take your turn.

- He was serving a 25-year sentence for murder when a forgotten math textbook changed everything.
Christopher Havens arrived in a maximum-security prison in Washington carrying the weight of a life defined by bad decisions, drugs, violence, and crime. By 2011, at thirty-one years old, his future looked brutally fixed. For most people, prison is where ambition ends and hope withers.
For Christopher, prison gave him something he’d never had before: time.
One day, a cellmate left behind a math textbook. Out of boredom more than curiosity, Christopher picked it up. Math had never been his strength. He had scraped through school and dropped out without direction. But alone in his cell, with long hours and nothing to distract him, he began working through the problems.
Something unexpected happened.
The logic clicked. The rules held. In a life ruled by chaos, math offered certainty, answers that were either right or wrong, systems that rewarded patience and precision. It gave him clarity where everything else had failed.
He asked the prison education program for more books. Then harder ones. He taught himself algebra. Then calculus. Then advanced topics most students never encounter without a university classroom. Night after night, he worked alone, filling pages with symbols and proofs.
Eventually, he hit limits. Some concepts were too advanced to unravel alone. He needed guidance.
So Christopher did something audacious: he wrote letters to professional mathematicians around the world, asking for help.
Most never replied. Understandably so. Letters from a convicted murderer asking about abstract mathematics rarely make it to the top of an academic inbox. But one mathematician answered: Umberto Cerruti from the University of Turin.
Cerruti didn’t condescend. He challenged Christopher.
He sent materials on number theory, one of mathematics’ most abstract and demanding fields, and assigned problems that would test even trained researchers. Christopher responded with pages of handwritten work, careful, rigorous, original.
Working with nothing but paper, pencils, and books in a prison cell, Christopher began exploring continued fractions and quadratic irrationals, ideas first studied by Euclid more than two thousand years ago. This wasn’t homework. This was research.
Then came the moment that stunned everyone.
Christopher produced an original result.
He uncovered new insights into relationships within number theory that had eluded others. Cerruti shared the work with colleagues. They checked it. Verified it. It held up.
This wasn’t impressive for a prisoner. It was impressive, period.
In 2020, Christopher Havens’ research was formally published in Research in Number Theory, a respected peer-reviewed journal. A man serving decades in prison, with no college degree and no access to computers or university libraries, had contributed original, doctoral-level mathematics to human knowledge.
The academic world took notice. Mathematicians shared the paper. Educators pointed to his story as proof that opportunity, not background, often determines potential. Journalists and filmmakers followed. Prison-education advocates cited the case as evidence that learning can transform lives even in the harshest conditions.
But the mathematics, remarkable as it is, may not be the most important part.
The transformation is.
The man who entered prison defined by violence discovered discipline, purpose, and a way to give back. Christopher went on to co-found the Prison Mathematics Project, mentoring incarcerated students around the world, helping them study mathematics and believe in futures larger than their worst mistakes.
He continues his own research, tackling problems that challenge professional mathematicians. He won’t be eligible for release until 2036. Yet in many ways, he’s already free, free to think, to create, to contribute.
Christopher Havens’ story isn’t an argument that crimes don’t matter. It’s proof that people are more than the worst thing they’ve done. That genius doesn’t require privilege. That education can unlock minds society has written off.
Somewhere in a prison cell tonight, someone is staring at a page of numbers, unaware of what they might become.
A math textbook left behind by a cellmate unlocked a mind capable of advancing two-thousand-year-old questions. That should change how we think about punishment, education, and human potential.

After sharp bedrock on Mars began punching holes in the rigid aluminum wheels of the Curiosity rover, engineers at NASA’s Glenn Research Center set out to build a tire that is simultaneously soft as rubber and indestructible as steel.
Traditional woven steel-spring tires used on the Apollo lunar roving vehicles worked well on soft moon dust, but if deformed too far over sharp rocks, ordinary steel permanently bends out of shape.
NASA materials engineers solved the problem by weaving hundreds of coiled radial springs out of stoichiometric Nitinol  a “shape-memory” alloy made of 50% nickel and 50% titanium.
Instead of stretching atomic bonds until they slip and bend like normal metals, Nitinol absorbs extreme crushing forces by reversibly shifting its internal crystal structure between two solid phases (austenite and martensite).
Capable of handling 30 times more deformation than steel without permanently bending, the airless Nitinol tire can deform all the way down to the axle over jagged boulders and instantly spring back into a perfect circle.

Karanbir Cheema was 13 years old and knew all too well what it was like to live in fear of food: he was allergic to dairy, wheat, gluten, eggs, and nuts.
On June 28, 2017, at his school in Greenford, west London, a classmate threw a piece of cheese at him, and it landed on his neck. He didn’t eat it; it only touched his skin. Even so, he immediately suffered anaphylactic shock. School staff administered an EpiPen that had expired 11 months earlier and failed to give the necessary second dose. After spending ten days in hospital, Karanbir died.
In May 2019, the inquest ruled that the classmate’s action was “childish and thoughtless.” The coroner concluded that the children involved were unaware of Karanbir’s condition and had no intention of harming him, absolving them of criminal liability.
However, the court held the school directly responsible for institutional negligence. The inquest found that the school had failed to educate its students about the dangers of allergies and had maintained a deficient internal medical plan, with expired medication and instructions poorly carried out by staff.
The case concluded with official prevention reports issued to the UK’s Department for Education and Department of Health, calling for changes to national school protocols. For Karanbir’s mother, Rina, her son’s death was the result of preventable failures, so her family decided to take legal action against the school.

- A 2.2-KILOMETER FLOATING BARRIER IS HELPING THE OCEAN CLEANUP REMOVE PLASTIC FROM THE PACIFIC OCEAN.
The Ocean Cleanup’s System 03 is designed to collect floating plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, where ocean currents concentrate enormous amounts of marine debris.
Researchers estimate the patch contains around 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, weighing approximately 100,000 tonnes.
But it isn't a solid island of garbage. The plastic is spread across a vast area, from large discarded items to tiny fragments drifting beneath the surface. Collecting it is a huge engineering challenge.
The Ocean Cleanup is also tackling the problem upstream with systems designed to intercept plastic in rivers before it reaches the sea.
That matters because cleaning up existing pollution is only half the battle. Preventing more plastic from entering the ocean is essential to making lasting progress.
The ocean cannot keep absorbing our waste. We need to remove the plastic already there—and stop sending more.

A 22-year-old Russian man named Artyom Avdeev reportedly lost the ability to walk after developing serious health problems following years of heavy energy drink consumption. According to reports from November 2025, he started drinking energy drinks when he was just 14 years old. He often stayed awake late at night playing video games and depended on these drinks to remain alert. Over time, his consumption increased to several cans a day, sometimes without eating proper meals.
His health problems became serious in the summer of 2025 when he experienced severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. Doctors diagnosed him with pancreatitis, a condition involving inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is an important organ that helps the body digest food and control blood sugar. In severe cases, pancreatic tissue can become damaged and begin to die, a dangerous condition called pancreatic necrosis.
Artyom later developed additional complications, including nerve damage affecting his legs. Doctors reportedly diagnosed him with polyneuropathy, a condition that damages multiple nerves and can cause weakness, numbness, and difficulty walking. His condition became so serious that he needed a wheelchair. Reports described him undergoing rehabilitation in St. Petersburg to regain movement and improve his strength.
This case highlights concerns about excessive energy drink consumption, particularly among young people. These drinks often contain high amounts of caffeine and other stimulants that can affect sleep, heart rate, and blood pressure. Although reports linked his illness to energy drinks, the exact cause of his pancreatic damage has not been medically established. His experience is an important reminder that energy drinks cannot replace proper sleep, balanced meals, and healthy daily habits.
