- notice how different things are in other parts of the world? Repairing your car on the side of a busy road over multiple days is almost completely unacceptable in the West. It seems to be common elsewhere? Notice complete lack of safety equipment, child labour, constant imminent danger, hacks/workarounds to deal with problems, etc... That said, notice their intelligence, innovation, use of knowledge from multiple fields, etc? A lot of cool stuff being done in poorer parts of the world? Easy to see why wealthier countries might want to chase after some of these people as skilled migrants? Better skilled, probably willing to work for less, and able to stretch resrouces further?

- what's surprising is that a lot of big brands such as Hyundai, Toyota, Nike, etc... outsource to such relatively low resourced/economically poor environments? There's so much branding and talk about quality control but these parts seem to be made and in almost backyard like operations? Given the nature of sweat shops, continuation of past imperial/colonial/foreign policy I guess it makes sense? In a way it reminds me of local sweat shops (which many developed countries officially deny but still have)? It doesn't hit you what the terms Made in China, Pakistan, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, etc... means until you see it?

- there are car channels that dabble in car design and manufacture but they're not as interesting because they don't tell you how particular components work, how they fit together, what makes certain cars special, etc...  I guess that's the nature of trade secrets, intellectual property, a facet of a competitive world, etc... The strange thing for me is how basic a lot of modern supercars/hypercars seem? The basic frame structure is covered with exotic materials and a nicely shaped body but often the engine/powerplant and transmission/power train is from something unexpected? It can be pretty mundane, be shared between between cars at very different price points, etc...

Powertrain
The powertrain of the Mercedes-AMG ONE is rated at 782 kW (1,063 PS; 1,049 hp) through a hybrid drivetrain that shares many features with modern Formula One cars. The car has five motors with different functions on board: one internal combustion engine (ICE) and four electric motors.
Internal combustion engine
The Mercedes-AMG ONE utilises a modified Mercedes-Benz PU106B Hybrid engine, a 1.6-litre turbocharged 90-degree V6 engine from the Mercedes-AMG F1 W06 Formula One car, as confirmed by Mercedes-AMG board member Ola Källenius.[16][17] Modifications are done to the engine due to the engine's illegality in RPM idle and redline. The head of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, states that the engine will be at 1,280 rpm when idle, and at 11,000 rpm when at its redline limit.[18] However, the engine will only last for 50,000 km (31,000 mi) and the owners will have to return their cars for engine refurbishment.[19] The ICE produces 422 kW (574 PS; 566 hp), with torque figures unknown because of the complex drivetrain. The top speed of this car is 219 mph (352 km/h).[20]

Pagani's first model, the Zonda, is powered by a mid-mounted DOHC V12 engine manufactured by Mercedes-Benz's AMG division. The car's design was inspired by jet fighters and the famous Sauber-Mercedes Silver Arrow Group C cars, and features several unique design elements, including its circular four pipe exhaust system.

- engine teardowns are interesting but can get mundane after a while since there aren't genuinely significant advances/conceptually in engine technology (from my perspective)? I obviously like to dabble into this area and am in general several years to many more years ahead of whatever is out there in various fields. If you look at core science many advances are possible? I'll post more on this in later blog posts...

- At its core, the Total Wellbeing Diet program features a high-protein, high-vegetable, low-glycemic-index nutritional plan – similar to the first book's 15 years ago. When the diet was initially released, it received some criticism within the scientific community, particularly for being too heavily focused on meat consumption.
Subsequently, the digital program has made the diet more accessible for vegetarians. Though it does not offer a strictly vegetarian or vegan meal plan, participants are able to swap meals from a catalogue of 150 vegetarian recipes, or swap animal proteins for vegetarian equivalents such as tofu and pulses. In 2010, a paper in Public Health Nutrition found the diet book to be "a successful delivery mechanism for lifestyle advice".

"Google is an effective monopoly and by withholding access to such timely, accurate and important information they show clearly how they impact what access Australians have to that," the spokesman said.

- The state's Law Enforcement and Conduct Commission (LECC) has quietly launched a review of the use of consorting powers, with preliminary findings revealing Aboriginal Australians are dramatically over-represented in the use of the law in NSW.
According to the memo, which has subsequently been circulated to a parliamentary committee investigating high rates of Aboriginal incarceration in NSW, the LECC's analysis found 40% of people subject to consorting laws in NSW between February 2019 and June 2020 were Indigenous.
...
O'Farrell said at the time: "These new laws will be additional tools in the police armoury to help them protect innocent lives and bring those involved in criminal gangs behind drive-by shootings before the courts."
The laws allow police to charge people for communicating four or more times with convicted criminals, with an associated jail term of up to three years. The new laws substantially increased penalties for consorting in circumstances where a formal warning had been issued by police, increasing jail sentences from six months to three years.
But concern that police were using the laws outside of what was intended by the legislation have been raised almost since their inception.
In 2012 the ABC revealed the first man to be jailed under the laws was a 21-year-old Inverell man born with an intellectual disability who was sentenced to between nine and 12 months' jail for a series of shopping trips and walks with three friends who had prior convictions.
In 2016 the NSW ombudsman released a damning report which found police were using the laws for minor crimes and targeting a number of vulnerable groups including Aboriginal people, children and the homeless.
The three-year review found an "exceptionally high police error rate" in the use of the laws against young people in particular, finding that more than three-quarters of warnings issued about children were "unlawful as they relied on a mistaken belief that the person was a 'convicted offender' at the time".
The new data from the LECC also shows the impact of the laws on Indigenous Australians has not improved since the ombudsman's review. The 2016 report found Aboriginal people made up 38% of all people issued with an official warning for consorting. The number of Indigenous children subject to the laws had decreased to 25% from almost 60%.

- The industry super sector has rejected Josh Frydenberg's "Your Money, Your Super" package of changes to superannuation as a "gift" to for-profit fund operators that will enable them to continue making billions in profits each year off dud retirement savings schemes.
According to Productivity Commission data, industry funds, which are run only for the profit of members, systematically outperform retail funds, which are run to profit financial institutions such as banks.
But peak body Industry Super Australia (ISA) will argue in submissions to a review of the package of laws that the proposed legislation would give the for-profit sector an unfair advantage by exempting many of its products from measures designed to curb fees and expose poorly performing funds.

A bipartisan group of state attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Wednesday both filed lawsuits against Facebook, accusing the social media giant of anticompetitive acquisitions and putting the company firmly in the antitrust hot seat.
The state AG lawsuit — led by New York's Letitia James (D) along with 47 others — alleges Facebook sought to maintain its monopoly power by acquiring potential rivals, including WhatsApp and Instagram.
"For nearly a decade, Facebook has used its dominance and monopoly power to crush smaller rivals and snuff out competition, all at the expense of everyday users," James said in a statement. "Today, we are taking action to stand up for the millions of consumers and many small businesses that have been harmed by Facebook's illegal behavior."

According to the court papers, Schulte has been in solitary confinement and not been outdoors in over two years under special administrative measures designed to severely restrict an inmate's communications and interactions with others.
Prosecutors say the measures are necessary after Schulte tried to leak even more classified information using a contraband cellphone that had been smuggled into the jail. They said he declared an "information war" and was "prepared to burn down the United States government."
Schulte's filthy cell, the size of a parking space, is infested with rodents, rodent droppings, cockroaches and mold and there is no heating, air conditioning or functioning plumbing, the court papers said, while sunlight is blocked by a blacked out window. Television access is permitted for one hour per week.
The toilet operates so poorly that he lets feces partially dissolve before flushing, according to court documents, and temperatures fall so low that water in his cell turns to ice and he shivers despite wearing four sets of clothing, five sets of socks, two blankets and three sets of socks on his hands.
Bright lights are on nonstop, he isn't allowed outside recreation and his access to commissary and visitation is severely restricted, while his access to books or legal materials is banned or severely limited, along with visits to dentists or doctors, despite heart-related issues, Schulte maintained.
In his prison unit on the jail's 10th floor, silverware and cups are banned so "inmates are forced to eat and drink with their hands like the caged animals that they are," the filing said. Several men awaiting trial in cells nearby are charged in terrorism cases.
When he is moved outside his cell, he is "shackled from head-to-toe like Hannibal," the filing added, referencing the fictional Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer from the 1991 horror movie "The Silence of the Lambs."
Sabrina Shroff, one of Schulte's lawyers, said he was not exaggerating with his claims in a jail long derided by inmates as harsh for defendants awaiting trial.
"I think that everyone on Mr. Schulte's defense team is horrified by the conditions in which he has to live daily," she said.

- Long-term health effects
Soldiers who claimed to have been exposed to chemical warfare have often presented with unusual medical conditions which has led to much controversy. The lack of information has left doctors, patients, and their families in the dark in terms of prognosis and treatment. Nerve agents such as sarin, tabun, and soman are believed to have the most significant long-term health effects.[83] Chronic fatigue and memory loss have been reported to last up to three years after exposure. In the years following World War One, there were many conferences held in attempts to abolish the use of chemical weapons all together, such as the Washington Naval Conference (1921–22), Geneva Conference (1923–25) and the World Disarmament Conference (1933). The United States was an original signatory of the Geneva Protocol in 1925, but the US Senate did not ratify it until 1975.
Although the health effects are generally chronic in nature, the exposures were generally acute. A positive correlation has been proven between exposure to mustard agents and skin cancers, other respiratory and skin conditions, leukemia, several eye conditions, bone marrow depression and subsequent immunosuppression, psychological disorders and sexual dysfunction.[84] Chemicals used in the production of chemical weapons have also left residues in the soil where the weapons were used. The chemicals that have been detected can cause cancer and can affect the brain, blood, liver, kidneys and skin.[85]
Despite the evidence in support of long-term health effects, there are studies that show just the opposite. Some US veterans who were closely affected by chemical weapons showed no neurological evidence in the following years. These same studies showed that one single contact with chemical weapons would be enough to cause long-term health effects.[86]

- Victorian public hospitals are being sued by young doctors who are desperate to fight back against years of "wage theft and ridiculous hours".
It comes as the first of about 30 planned lawsuits was filed in the Federal Court against Peninsula Health, with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) warning a "considerable larger" health service was the next to be hit with a legal claim.
More than 10,500 Victorian junior doctors have been invited to join class actions against other health services over what unions allege is widespread underpayment of wages.
Dr Karla Villafana-Soto said she could not even count how much she was owed in unpaid wages in the past eight years of her medical career but estimated the figure to be in the "many, many thousands".
"This is wage theft," she said.
"It's a measure of last resort to use these words, but we've been advocating for years and health services just aren't listening, so to put it in these words is the only way we can be heard."
Dr Villafana-Soto – who said she'd be forced to work two to three hours overtime every shift – recalled one moment where she queried why the hours had gone unpaid but was "brushed off" by her head of unit.
Instead, she was summoned to a meeting where it was suggested she "wasn't as efficient as another doctor".
"It was completely demoralising," she told NCA NewsWire.
"We know this is a hard career and we enjoy that hard work, but when work becomes this dangerous, when you're doing ridiculous hours, sleep-deprived, stressed and then gagged – it really does hurt.
"This isn't a junior doctor versus senior doctor problem, it's a system and culture and problem, and we need to change this now or we'll see a massive exodus of young and capable doctors."
The Victorian Branch of the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation (ASMOF) is leading the class actions, together with the junior doctors.
AMA Victoria is also supporting the action, represented by law firms Gordon Legal and Hayden Stephens and Associates.

- The end of humankind? It may be coming sooner than we think, thanks to hormone-disrupting chemicals that are decimating fertility at an alarming rate around the globe. A new book called Countdown, by Shanna Swan, an environmental and reproductive epidemiologist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, finds that sperm counts have dropped almost 60% since 1973. Following the trajectory we are on, Swan's research suggests sperm counts could reach zero by 2045. Zero. Let that sink in. That would mean no babies. No reproduction. No more humans. Forgive me for asking: why isn't the UN calling an emergency meeting on this right now?
The chemicals to blame for this crisis are found in everything from plastic containers and food wrapping, to waterproof clothes and fragrances in cleaning products, to soaps and shampoos, to electronics and carpeting. Some of them, called PFAS, are known as "forever chemicals", because they don't breakdown in the environment or the human body. They just accumulate and accumulate – doing more and more damage, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. Now, it seems, humanity is reaching a breaking point.
Swan's book is staggering in its findings. "In some parts of the world, the average twentysomething woman today is less fertile than her grandmother was at 35," Swan writes. In addition to that, Swan finds that, on average, a man today will have half of the sperm his grandfather had. "The current state of reproductive affairs can't continue much longer without threatening human survival," writes Swan, adding: "It's a global existential crisis." That's not hyperbole. That's just science.
As if this wasn't terrifying enough, Swan's research finds that these chemicals aren't just dramatically reducing semen quality, they are also shrinking penis size and volume of the testes. This is nothing short of a full-scale emergency for humanity.
Swan's book echoes previous research, which has found that PFAS harms sperm production, disrupts the male hormone and is correlated to a "reduction of semen quality, testicular volume and penile length". These chemicals are literally confusing our bodies, making them send mix messages and go haywire.

- With all this in mind, the U.S. government, among others, has long worked to acquire foreign threat representative systems, especially aircraft and air defense systems, on the open market and via other means for FME, testing, and training purposes. In one particularly famous example, U.S. special operations forces, including elements of the U.S. Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, snatched a Libyan Mi-25 Hind helicopter gunship from neighboring Chad in 1988. During the Cold War, the U.S. Air Force also set up an entire top-secret squadron, known as the Red Eagles, equipped with foreign jets that had been smuggled out of various countries or otherwise recovered, including some that had been partially destroyed, to test and train against.
All told, no matter what might have ultimately happened to the Pantsir-S1 that the U.S. military reportedly picked up in Libya, it's certain that intelligence analysts took all available opportunities to glean any additional information they could from it.

- Researchers have managed to keep tabs on 1 million different neurons in the brains of mice at one time – taking scientists an impressive step closer towards one day being able to track the very-complex activity of human brains.
The key is an innovation that's being called 'light beads microscopy'. It improves on current two-photon microscopy, using lasers to trigger introduced fluorescence in living cells. As the cells are lit up, scientists can see how they're moving and interacting.
With light beads microscopy, scientists can get the speed, scale, and resolution required to map a mouse brain in detail as its neural activity changes. The near-simultaneous tracking can last for as long as the light beads are able to stay illuminated.
"Understanding the nature of the brain's densely interconnected network requires developing novel imaging techniques that can capture the activity of neurons across vastly separated brain regions at high speed and single-cell resolution," says neuroscientist Alipasha Vaziri, from the Rockefeller University in New York.
"We need to capture many neurons at distant parts of the brain at the same time at high resolution. These parameters are almost mutually exclusive."
In other words, current microscopy techniques have to choose between zooming in to get enough detail and missing out on everything that's going on, or zooming out to see the whole picture and losing some of the finer details.
Light beads microscopy is able to overcome these limitations by removing the dead time between laser pulses – using a cavity of mirrors it splits each single strong pulse into 30 smaller sub pulses of different strengths, which are then all able to reach different depths while keeping the same level of fluorescence.
This means multiple depths can be visualized in the same pulse, giving scientists a deeper, faster look at what's happening. The scientists have now demonstrated the technique to track 1 million neurons at once in a mouse brain.
"There's no good reason why we didn't do this five years ago," says Vaziri. "It would have been possible – the microscope and laser technology existed. No one thought of it."
Through light beads microscopy, the scientists are hoping to be able to track the interactions between the sensory, motor, and visual regions of the brain – not just in mice but in other animals too.
Interpreting and understanding the neural activity that's being recorded will require another step forward, but the new study pushes forward the idea of what's possible with this kind of microscopic analysis.
The better we can see inside the brain, the better we can work out how it operates – whether that's the interplay between individual nerve cells or finding out which parts of the brain correspond to which feelings and emotions.
"Light beads microscopy will allow us to investigate biological questions in a way that had not been possible before," says Vaziri.

Car of the Future, some Random Intelligence, and Defense Thoughts

A follow on from:
http://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2013/05/going-green-part-2.html
http://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2013/07/europeaninternational-economic-reform.html

Some of the following technologies are obviously extremely far off into the future while others are very easily adaptable and can be implemented basically immediately.

- a variation on shield technology I've been thinking of is pulse wave shields (we probably haven't reached energy density levels in small enough packages to enable medium/long term/time shields so I've been thinking of using super capacitor technology in combination with conventional projectile interceptors to send shock waves/ pulses as missiles come in). Obvious issue is altitude and also efficiency issues related to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mach_number
May also be used in combination with constructive interference to break through accelerate through to supersonic speeds more quickly (possible to offset onset of sonic booms through destructive interference?). My preference is to power once more on environmental technologies. Peltier modules will once gain use the air temperature differential between engines and the external atmosphere in order to power shield/pulse wave generators. They could serve to give off decoy radar signatures (especially in the case of low RCS aircraft), may also reduce the IR signature of the aircraft by converting heat into electricity, slow down/reduce/stop the range of incoming missiles, concussion waves (similar effect to so called flash bangs) for non-lethal combatant control, etc...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stun_grenade
- a lot of renewable energy systems such as street lighting shorts to ground/wastes energy when not in use. Would like to send this back into grid whereever possible/reasonable. All lighting systems must have an output. May require an open standard here?
http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article40963.html
- would like car manufacturers to reconsider seating format. 2+3 or 2+2 seems to be standard nowadays but as previously stated would like to see other lower seat capacity options/configurations. Single seater with 'Transformatech' capabilities, 1+2, 1+3 configuration also. Obvious reasons include reduced weight, easier export to alternative markets, etc... However, since we're removing so many extraneous parts it also means that we can have more room to move ballast. In this case, I'd probably try to move the front passengers directly over the front wheels for better traction (this is likely to be a rear mid engine configuration but numerous alterations will be made to aide safely because we'll me making more alterations to the front end of the car as you'll discover shortly)
- physical linkage of cars is unrealistic given current technology on Earth. Another alternative is using automated slipstreaming/drafting to save fuel/energy (as per animals)?
herd flock
how much does slipstream save fuel on highways
The opposite seems to be true.
There was, or maybe still is, a company that was looking into designing a system that allowed two semi trucks to "link" to each other (basically the truck in back had its braking and acceleration controlled by the truck in the lead -- this allows for a much closer follow distance and for the trucker in the back to have autonomous driving). In testing both trucks reportedly saw a benefit - the lead truck got about a 5% boost to fuel efficiency and the slipstreaming truck got about a 10-15% boost.
Edit:
I would assume the physics for the lead truck are similar to adding the rear flaps that are becoming more and more common:
- move towards plastic windows. Obvious issues regarding shatter/safety though for emergency services. Propose purposely embedding weak points (grooves) or else a lattice framework within the window so that the structural integrity is weakened at known points in case of emergency

http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/In-Gear/2013/0212/Will-your-next-car-have-plastic-windows
- move towards resin/glue on cars as a means of saving weight on welds, increasing strengh becoming more commonplace. Would like to see this filter down to all cars at some point
- am considering abolition of electrically based power windows/central locking systems (am unsure about efficiency/convience gain over current systems though. Will have to do some experiments). Moving to hydraulic system based on compressed air or a liquid system that is unlikely to require replacing we use high quality parts/fluids. Would be controlled through a central reservoir with a series of vales which would open/close and a pump which would dispense the required air/fluid to deal with each door/window
http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/weight-difference-power-vs-manual-windows-21817.html
- have also considered moving towards a braking system that is basically based on air but it's clear that there are compression/latency issues. Moreover, since I envisage moving towards superconducting brakes which don't generate heat (but are more effective and are used on Jetcars) it's likely that if we use high quality parts/fluids the brake fluid may never deteriorate/require replacing
- considered using ride height changes/dynamic rake (see Formula 1) but am concerned about reliability cost
- considered dyed plastic which means that if there is a scratch you can buff it out most of the time. Moreover, it saves the cost/time associated with painting parts
- consider using Coanda style aerodynamic solutions/vortex generators to clean up airflow around rear end (used on many super/hypercars). Air inflow will come from 'gill' like serrations that will open/close on the side of the car
- consider using hinged flaps over door hinges in to further clean up aerodynamics (these will seal the air flow flat to the side of the door with no indentation)
- mandate minimum drag coefficient levels?
- have considered using HUD's but am worried that they aren't easily readible in daylight. Have concerns that modifications to screen required to maintain good visibility may make price of screen prohibitive
- it's likely that I'll try to reduce the size (or get rid of) the dashboard (I'm only likely to keep a small portion of it for redundancy safety purposes) or get rid of it completely where possible. It will be replaced by a tablet like computer which will replace many of the onboard electronic systems and other functionality such as the ECU, security system, stereo system, etc... This will obviously result in large weight savings. It will also add a lot of extra functionality which I will details alter on which may have a dramatic impact on the way we drive in the future
http://www.itwire.com/opinion-and-analysis/shaw-thing/60104-reimagining-cars-for-the-digital-era
- conventional speakers will be replaced by flat panel speakers. The difference in sound fidelity/quality is problematic but is diminishing based on what I've been reading
- I previously said I'd like to get rid of rack and pinion steering. I've changed my mind for safety reasons. Gears will be replaced by a circular superconducters that are sliced up like pizza slices. Each slice will alternatate the polarity with the ratcheting mechanism on the steering arm. It may be suppemented by extra electromagnets that would allow you to adjust the amount of power steering assitance that you require. I'd like my version to have the same system on the back end as well while being connected with a central pole? This would reduce turning circles considerably (consider abolishing differential?)
- the other steering mechanism that I had with 'fancy differentials' that dealt with each wheel would have offered some benefits though. It would mean that the tyres would never angle outwards. This meant I could create door like covers on each wheel (no more wheel flares/edges which would impact on aero. They would be flattened to the side of the car now) itself. This would benefit aerodynamic obviously
- switch to racing style/bucket like seats. Almost as comfortable but at a lower weight. Unlikely to use power seats for weight savings
- since there is no major dashboard anymore some of the safety provided from it's presense is lost. We're going to replace it with honeycomb pattern of plastic/metal which is liked to vehicle telemetry which will alter the amount of charge applied to these crumble zones. This will increase the strength/weaken the strength of doors/bumper bars, etc... depending on the speed likelihood of an accident. This means that in lower speed accidents you're less likely to incur significant damage while in higher speed accidents you'll have more crumple protection (I'm guessing that in some cases if we can make enough progress in these materials we may be able to have cars which can basically repair themselves someday)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroactive_polymers
- would like to see them offer the option of being able to remove seats from car during purchase and add later on if need be for cost reasons as stated previously
- obvious option is simply to reduce dimensions of the car but it's unlikely I'd do too much of this to remain higher levels of comfort
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/mazda6-more-than-just-a-finally-pretty-face-2013-06-29
- want to move to steel/composite hybrid engines. My hope is that we reach the stage in superconducter/materials technology where the walls of the piston chamber and piston itself are repelled only via 'magnetic forces' and there is enough compression to be adequate for power but not enough to generate significant friction which would require a radiator
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.25.4992
http://industrial.lukas.com/Products/Lifting+cylinders/Double_acting+hollow+piston+steel+cylinders.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_head
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piston
- want to see slightly more aerodynamic design of moving parts in the engine. This means that in combustion engines the top of valves and pistons will be shaped to become slightly bullet like to reduce drag. Am aware of experiments with piston shaping to increase efficacy. Would like to attempt to experiment with flexible face technology, hollow cores, as used in golf club drivers as well... Obvious issues related to lifespan though if using flexing to change shape of piston head as it moves up/down through cylinder
- as I've previously said I'd like to move towards low friction/frictionless technology across the board including engines. This obviously reduces cooling requires but also means that we can do away with a lot of other parts such as the radiator, radiator fluid, radiator fan, oil filter, oil sump, oil, power steering, power steering pump, power steering fluid, most of the transmission (I have an alternative design which is roughly based on the power steering system technology that I mentioned above), transmission fluid, etc... To give you an idea of how much this changes the car weight equation as it stands we use about 300-400kg for many current engine/transmission combinations

http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2045&start=15
- would like to get rid of spark plugs as well. Achievable by altering fuel but that may require 'additives' or significant engine modifications which may detract from my desire for it to be truly 'multi-fuel'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine
- dirt repelling undertray which will result in less losses through lost fuel efficiency
- believe traction problems can be overcome through an array of measures. Obviously, better tyre compounds but am considering an array of other options. Among them are multi-chamber tyres, heating the rim of the types to attain the optimum temperature/pressure, tyres which have an electrical membrane/circuit (a number of independent sections) that are built into the wall. Each time the tyre comes into contact with the ground the switch/circuit is triggered metal/plastic built into the tire is flattened so that maximum tire adhesion/traction is achieved, another is a tire/rubber compound which becomes more tacky on contact with air (far off into the future), another is dynamic inflation technologies which involves a centralised inflation system working in combination with LIDAR/RADAR scanning technologies which would open up tiny pressure release valves in the wheels/tires. Once a tricky section had been bypassed the tire would be re-inflated to the original desired pressure. Another concept that I've been examining is using a concentric wheel/ball bearing configuration. The outer wheel/shell would be connected to the tire, the inner wheel/rim would be in the same configuration as a conventional ball bearing that you see in roller blades. The balls at the bottom would be significantly heavier though which means that you effectively have extra ballast pushing down at each tire which will increase it's traction
http://smh.drive.com.au/motor-news/bmw-says-performance-has-peaked-20130627-2ozk5.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroactive_polymers
At some point though I'd like to move away completely from pneumatic tyres to tires with just the membrace structure once we achieve gains in materials technology. Either way, with the increases in traction and the reduced weight my hope is that tires will last the entire life of the vehicle itself. Moreover, if we no longer have to rely on air we can no longer have 'flat tires'

- previously I said I'd like to move towards ground effect style vehicles which make better use of aerodynamic (dynamic aerodynmamics in particular). I'm wondering whether we should use a combination of passive and active dynamic aero technologies? The front/rear spoilers and floor would be passive with active technologies such as 'winglets' added/extended out of the sides of the car if desired/required
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroelasticity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroactive_polymers
- would like to move toward more organic technologies in cars including the air filter which is currently mostly paper
- I think one thing we should keep in mind that we shouldn't be afraid to start car design from scratch once more. We've come a long way with many technologies but sometimes it seems as though the basics of car technology haven't changed over a long time
- curious to know whether we could create heat absorbant roads to suck up extra heat and put it back into the ground? Passive metal heatsinks/pipes? A coating? how would this impact on road car performance?
http://www.camdenadvertiser.com.au/story/1625465/city-expected-to-feel-heat-as-it-expands/?cs=7
- would like to get rid of car battery or at least reduce it's influence. Will be replaced by a supercapacitor that is charged through mains, wirelessly, or via an auxiliary battery system that is carried by the driver themselves. Battery/alternator only added if extra equipment added
- more efficient tech doesn't necessarily mean less power usage overall. Recently, I heard a stat which said that with the advent of flat panel televisions people have moved to increasingly larger screen sizes. However, the size of the screens have reached the point where power efficiency gains have been wiped out
- recently a town in Spain installed sensors everywhere to turn their city into a 'smart city'. I think there may be a cheaper way of doing this but I'm not sure whether sensor technology has reached the required level as yet. If you've ever poured a glass of liquid into a cup and then 'tapped' it when empty, half empty, full, etc... you'll notice that the sound/frequency changes. The same principle can be used here. Using wide spectrum, spread spectrum radio waves over the long term and in short periods/bursts of time we can determine the frequency of what is inside of an object at any point in time (similar to biosensory technology that you see in science fiction movies but which is basically a step up from current siesmograph technology). It's likely that such technology will require a leap current sensor technology as well as extensive tuning though. This technology obviously has other uses as well especially in the arms control arena. Sufficient advancements may even allow you to gain the blueprints of any remote device by pointing and shooting just like a camera. Another way is to have a smaller number of sensors from a high point. For instance, if you have cameras in streetlights you can take pictures of many car parking spaces and detect which ones are and aren't empty. This is also less likely to be tampered because it's less likely to be reached by potential vandals
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23281950
- this leads me to another point though if you have a proper computer in a car as we would here you open up a world of possiblities. Using wireless networking you can broadcast details of which spaces are empty in a car parking lot and direct drivers from one point to another using direction/triangulation. Moreover, if you get lost and your car is still connected to the car parking lot's computer you can use direction/triangulation to provide you with a 'compass' of how to get back to your car. While we're at it we could probably get rid of parking tickets as well. Collision avoidance technology is basically not too dissimilar to the logic used in games such as battleship but on a significantly more complex level so it's likely that if you have the sensors then you can add this and other functionality (such as driverless mode and automated parking) to your car anytime you desire

- considering using a gyro which will basically swing ballast in the car to increase cornering speed or increase stability (depending on needs/requirements)
- we often use salt or other additives such as radiator anti-boil/freeze fluid as a means of reducing/increasing the freezing point/boiling point of water. Wondering whether there is a substance we can add that is non-toxic that we can use to alter freezing point in polar ice regions? Obvious issue is tidal flow but as we've seen with oil wondering whether if increased viscosity and a 'long rope' may be enough to keep the substance where you need it? Moreover, would it be possible to time things so that we can change where the ice actually lies?
- guesttimation leads me to believe that many of the measures outlined here will result in huge weight savings (about half which means road cars will approach Formula 1 race car weights of about 650 KG. We could go below Formula 1 car weights if we're willing to move toward composite construction but this would likely come at huge financial cost. I recall a documentary which stated that a carbon fibre drive train alone could cost $200,000! Moreover, it doesn't deal with the issue of dynamic aerodynamics as I'd previously envisaged). This would likely mean a switch to 1 to 4 (it's unlikely that you'd require more than two cylinders based on the weight savings and subsequent power to weight ratio) cylinder normally aspirated engines (super/turbo charging would be my preference for a sportier ride) Would like to use these savings to add independent suspensions systems, stability control, more air bags, and other extra safety features for all cars from now on

- we know we can retrofit fuel injection to carburetor based engines. Why not move from 4 stroke to 8 or 16 stroke engines as well. The move from 2 stroke to 4 stroke engines double fuel savings in many cases and I suspect you could achieve the same by increasing the total number of strokes as well. Retrofitting this technology would save fuel, engine wear, and genuinely make a difference to environmental emissions concerns going forward as well?
African GENIUS makes Old Engines outdo Modern Engines!
Take a Look at Ghana’s First Plastic House
fuel efficiency 2 stroke vs 4 stroke
Four-Stroke Outboards: Smooth and Efficient
= More Complex Design: These engines include a valve train and a dedicated lubrication system, making them heavier and more intricate.
= Better Fuel Efficiency: 4-strokes are known for their excellent fuel economy, consuming significantly (up to 50%) less fuel than 2-strokes.
= Lower Emissions: They produce up to 90% cleaner emissions and comply with stricter environmental standards.
= Quieter Operation: Thanks to their design, they tend to run smoother and quieter with less vibration.
= Higher Initial Cost: You’ll typically pay more upfront for a 4-stroke, but the fuel savings can add up over time.
= More Durable: Built for longevity, these engines often outlast 2-strokes when maintained properly.
Heavy weight and more suitable for Commercial Use
- for an idea of what such a vehicle is likely to resemble look at the movie 'Tron Legacy'. A motorcycle version is likely to look very similar to the one in the movie and the car would bear some similarities to the buggy/style car in it
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tron:_Legacy
- there are huge problems if we move towards to some of the technologies mentioned here in particular with the automotive industry. Cars are already becoming more reliable which has meant lower sales over the long term. This car would significantly remove wear and has far fewer fluids (my desire is for no toxic materials which need to be 'dealt with' upon disposal/service/repair), moving parts which can fail on top of this. This means less repairs/servicing (possibly/probably none if you take adequate design steps. All you'd need to do is hook it up to a computer with relevant software it would tell you what was wrong since many of the systems are centralised and are easily accessed/diagnosed). It's likely that some of the cost of these one off technologies and the overall reliablity (once perfected) would lead to an extremely expensive up front vehicle as well
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_glycol
- there's a lot more that I've thought about but I think these are the major points. Will leave other points regarding future/sustainability technology (including plans for making travel beyond our own planet much (hopefully) easier) for another time
