- Foreign investors are buying less and less American debt, yet the US moves onward with a debt-heavy budget and globally unpopular diplomacy.

At a critical time for economic growth, the US has noted a decline in foreign investment. Seen mostly in long-term treasury bonds, purchases by indirect bidders continue to decrease signaling investors may be weary of American debt.

The European Central Bank found that after 2015, over half of US debt securities had been purchased by eurozone investors. Germany in particular holds $90.1 billion (€76 billion) of US debt.

In 2017 that trend reversed and eurozone investors became net sellers. The debate continues on what effect the growing debt has on investor confidence and how the US got in this position to begin with.

- On Friday, Khan announced a policy aimed at easing the pressure parents face from their children to buy them junk food.

"In the future, you won't be be able to advertise foods high in fat, high in sugar and high in salt on the tubes, on the trams, on the buses and on the London overground," the Labour Mayor said.

A junk food advertising ban was trialled on a smaller scale in Amsterdam, where the Mayor has overseen a 12 per cent reduction in the number of children deemed overweight or obese in just three years since announcing a multi-faceted childhood obesity policy.

- Gizmodo quoted one employee who quit as saying: "Over the last couple of months, I’ve been less and less impressed with the response and the way people’s concerns are being treated and listened to."

Another said: "It’s not like Google is this little machine-learning start-up that’s trying to find clients in different industries. It just seems like it makes sense for Google and Google’s reputation to stay out of that.”

Apart from the Google employees, a coalition of workers in the technology industry launched a petition in April asking Microsoft, Amazon, IBM and Google not to get involved in Defence Department projects.

Their petition said: "We believe that tech companies should not be in the business of war, and that we as tech workers must adopt binding ethical standards for the use of AI that will let us build the world we believe in. Google should break its contract with the Department of Defence.

"DoD contracts between Google, Microsoft, IBM and Amazon break user trust and signal a dangerous alliance. Tech companies that have vast quantities of sensitive data from users across the globe shouldn't build offensive technology for one country's military."
