Google Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Book Downloader Script, Random Stuff, and More

- I recently came across a deal for a free online book regarding Site Reliability Engineering (SRE). Decided to build a script to download it for reference purposes. Download the script here:
- details are as follows:
#    $Id: get_sre_book.sh,v 1.00 2018\08\01 12:14:31 root Exp root $

#
#    Recently, I came across a deal for a free SRE book (it's licensed
#    fairly liberally so this is allowed).
#    Free eBook "The Site Reliability Workbook" @ Google
#
#    Since I prefer to have offline versions of books I came across I decided
#    to modify my zorro-manual-compiler.sh script to do just this. This is the
#    result.
#
#    Obviously, you can modify this and use something like Selenium
#    to extract text only (see my seek_bot_selenium project)
#    but you may have to deal with formatting issues.
#
#    For those who are wondering this will work in principle with
#    document upload websites such as:
#    You just need to add some code to turn the page from time to time
#    (such as xvkbd) and sleep between page turns so that everything
#    renders correctly and completely.
#
#    Please see my blog and website for details on copying multimedia
#    (such as music and video) online.
#
#    As this is the very first version of the program (and I didn't have
#    access to the original server while I was cleaning this up it may
#    be VERY buggy). Please test prior to deployment in a production
#    environment.
#
#    1.00 - First version. Very basic script. Hence, sparse documentation.

- if you're wondering about the contents of both books they're both relatively light on technical content. That said, they're are some important lessons to be learned. Might I suggest combining them with some of my previous books such as 'Building a Cloud Computing Service', 'Convergence Effect', 'Cloud and Internet Security', etc?

Random Quotes:
- With 751 million Internet users — nearly 55% of the population — and 663 million smartphone users, China dwarfs every other country when it comes to digital metrics. Of those Internet users, 72.1% are between 10 and 39 years old.

A report on digital trends in China by well-known businesswoman Edith Yeung contains many such little known statistics which give a correct digital picture of a country which many have heard of but of which little is known.

Of the 751 million Internet users, 95% access the net from their phones, the report says. Of the population of 1.379 billion, 71% own a smartphone.

The users of WeChat, the chat app that is an overwhelming favourite, number 889 million. This app offers what Facebook, WhatsApp, Tinder, Paypal and Slack together do. There are 500 million who use mobile payments.
- On the heels of a decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw the United States from Iran’s nuclear deal, France’s Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has urged Europe to stop acting like “US vassals” and continue trading with Tehran in defiance of what “the economic gendarme of the planet” has in store.

Experts argue that the French minister's remarks are a sign that Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal has caused a split between the White House and its European allies while rifts within the US administration are also widening.

Speaking on Europe 1 Radio, the French minister recently said European countries do realize that “we cannot keep going in the direction we are headed today whereby we submit to American decisions.”

“Do we accept that the United States is the economic gendarme of the planet? The answer is no,” Le Maire said, adding, “Do we accept the vassalization of Europe in commercial matters? The answer is no;” “do we accept extraterritorial sanctions? The answer is no.”

In the meantime, Le Maire urged other European countries to step up their economic sovereignty. In the coming weeks and months, France will reach out to other countries and look at “how to endow Europe with financial tools to become independent from the United States.”
- In the current diplomatic crisis, Russia see what it had forecasting long ago: the emergence of a multipolar world, the dissolution of Western solidarity and return of great power politics. Russians believe that America has “normalized” and returned to its unilateral instincts. This believe implies that the United States is an unreliable negotiator, but Russians knew that long before. Moscow’s list of grievances with Washington is longer than that of Europe, even when Europeans are irate with the United States for leaving the Iran deal, the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Paris Climate Agreement. Instead, Russia focuses on America’s “irresponsible moves” regarding arms control regimes (including in cyber and space) and regional conflicts (primarily in Syria and Ukraine).

If this a new normal for the United States, what is next for U.S. alliance politics? Since the 1953 Basic National Security Policy (NSC 162/2), America’s key foreign policy interest has been to maintain solidarity and share the burden of deterring the Soviet Union with Europe and Japan. The logic of the time was to unite the efforts of the four power centers—Germany, Great Britain, Japan and the United States—against the Soviets. In the last decade, America’s constant unilateral moves have shaken the foundation of this strategy. It is good news for Russia, since no single threat that requires full mobilization of America’s allies.

Moscow was striving for multipolarity—and here it is. Every nation is on its own. This does not mean that the world has become a safer place. It is a step toward more equilibrium in global politics, with classical power relations back in vogue. Moscow excels in this game and prefers it over unipolarity.
- "Eventually, the evolution of global finance will be very much related to the evolution of the global balance of power," the economist told RT. "This will not happen overnight. It will take time and many more crises and balance shifts. None really knows what the new system will look like."

The experts agreed that expelling the greenback from its dominant position in the international monetary system will take much more effort than just replacing it with the euro or other domestic currencies.

"Dollar dominance does not depend simply on its use to denominate trade, but on the dollar's role as the pivot of the international financial system – the fact that about 88 percent of the average daily turnover of foreign exchange instruments is against the dollar, in contrast to the share of the euro which is only about 31 percent," said Vasudevan.

The researcher highlighted that the recent impulse for dislodging the US currency is a symptom of a wider discontent with the rules of the dollar system, but is not a cure for the dollar problem.
- As cancer and other non-infectious diseases continue to rise all over the world it’s become harder for scientists to find safe, effective treatments. In addition, bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to drugs and synthetic medicines have become harsher.

These challenges have led to searches for new solutions, including natural substances, like medicinal plants. Plant based medicines are known to have more benefits because they are less poisonous than synthetic versions. They also have compounds that compliment each other that help in disease prevention.

People have been using plants to make medicines for thousands of years. The World Health Organisation estimates that between 75% and 80% of the world’s population uses at least some plant based medicines.
