Free Online Advertising and Marketing, Soldering Plastic, and More

- someone I know recently started up an online company. He's been trying to market his wares. Since reading an online article about a company that took off I decided to do a little more investigation:
- the most common way are via online advertising systems such as Adwords. The primary problem with them is that you only get traffic as long as you pay. However, in most cases there are free coupons that you can get online for advertising on various platforms if you want them
free google ads coupons
free facebook advertising coupons

- there are almost always free alternatives to any or the major services out there now. It's a niche area that won't gain as much traffic but sometimes you may get lucky
- maximise on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). If you build write content regularly on the Internet and tracks statistics it's easy to figure out what type of material is more popular and not

- there are online forums where you can market your wares. Don't do it directly as a lot of people seem to turn off especially if they're not 100% initially interested

- there are online directories and social bookmarking opportunities where people will look for services of that particular ilk. Just sign up or join them. Often they are free but sometimes payment is required

- word of mouth is another way but you need a way to build up some steam (One company I knew of  came up with a simple test for this. They asked customers did like their product and would they recommend it to others?). Interesting programs are ones based on exclusivity (Gmail/Facebook during their infancy), giveaways (Google/Facebook/Hotmail/Gumtree. The problem is that the Internet has made so much available for free that it's difficult to know how to make your mark), unique products are becoming rarer (globalisation has made much more products/services available to everyone but it has also made it more difficult to stand out in a crowd), etc...

- a former company I used to work with measured efficacy in this area by asking two questions of their clients. "Were they happy with the product?" and "Would they recommend the product to someone
else?" regularly. This transfers itself back into your core numbers (such as sales, downloads, media engagement, etc...). In reality, their products weren't that great but they had enough growth to be able to make up for whatever churn/client losses they had

- there are heaps of free resources on online but a lot of them are of limited use. You need to hone in on resources that are relevant to you

- there are journalists who get work on the side (paid or unpaid is often the key question)

- small business is a completely different animal from big business. Think it through. You have no critical mass and you need to build it up to support and ultimately grow your business
https://theinfluencerproject.com/
theinfluencerproject site:amazonaws.com
- make use of all the free advertising and trial offers that you can get. It will allow you to test whether a particular platform is reliable and also whether or not it's worth it
- keep in mind that people don't go to watch advertising/marketing on the Internet unless there's "a hook of some sort". Think of the Internet as though you were pitching something to a stranger. There's a lot out on there on the Internet. Why should they be interested in your product? Think about others as well as yourself. Don't think in terms of what you think is good is good about your product, think about what others would think is good about your product. Find a middle ground, leverage/communicate this, and whatever gives you success repeat it over and over again. If the product is good enough, it should take off...
- you need to "gain some genuine perspective". People in major media channels get heaps of PR requests which means that for someone to get press they need to be special/newsworthy, it needs to be a slow news day, it needs to be paid for, etc...
- beware farm type operations. They're much more difficult to distinguish against real traffic and there's no guarantee that they'll help actual sales. It may help with ranking/optimisation though
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-03-30/farming-for-likes-fake-social-media-engagement/10944078
- my experience with this arena is that multiple techniques combined work better then any single marketing style
- competitions/contests which force people to sign up and engage. This creates mailing lists which you can then use to facilitate further sales
- a lot of smaller companies I know have fake reviews by their own employees or acquaintances. It's really obvious if you spend time and examine statistics/numbers. I work in the publishing and media industry from time to time. They actually pay people from time to time to deal with this. If you have a relevant connection somewhere you may be able to leverage this?
paid reviews
https://wellkeptwallet.com/get-paid-to-write-reviews/
https://moneypantry.com/get-paid-to-write-reviews/
- network like crazy. You'll be surprised what people are willing to do for free if your interests are aligned. This is particularly the case for those who are younger or in the early stages in their careers, those who have a problem and your good or service fixes it, etc...
- a lot of media outlets have low bars to entry (a lot of media outlets require payment as well. This is especially the case in certain sectors such as the crypto world). Maximise your chances of exposure by finding low hanging fruit (this may boost your SEO via backlinks as well)
- one thing to note, most people online and in the real world are lying to themselves and one another. Most business enterprises fail. That's a fact. Even if sifting out what makes successful businesses work may be easy you still need to be able to execute which creates another layer of complexity because in spite of what they say most people are lazy, ineffective, inefficient, etc... This is why success seems so difficult to achieve?

- my power electric car antenna recently developed a fault and refused to go up or down. Each time I turned the radio on/off a grinding sound would ensue and my radio reception had developed a bit of white noise. So I took apart and found out that a geared cable had basically snapped in half which meant that the electrical drive was unable to push the antenna up/down
- I've obviously looked around for alternatives but have a bit been time short of late (parts from car wreckers/scrap yards and third party compatible are often a lot cheaper based on what I've seen). I decided to see whether I could solder the plastic cable together and at least have semi-good radio reception until I can get a proper replacement
- glue (even stronger types such as epoxy and superglue) wouldn't work because the contact area was too small, welding using alternate materials wouldn't work because it's too difficult to find something similar, tape wouldn't work because it would interfere with functioning of the device, winding metal wire around the gear teeth would work but it would only allow the device to go up/down part of the way, plastic welding seemed to the only choice
- it took a few goes but basically you have to clean up the old plastic to allow for a stronger weld (this helps remove impurities). Cut a few small pieces of it off and use this to solder the broken plastic components back togethr using a standard electric soldering iron at a low to medium power level. Once this is done you let it cool down. Depending on the plastic it may return back to it's original consistency or be much more brittle. Obviously, I was dealing with the former and had a pretty strong weld. Once the device was re-assembled everything seemed to be functional once more

Random Stuff:
- as usual thanks to all of the individuals and groups who purchase and use my goods and services
- had some zippers go bad on me lately. Here are some tips if you're having the same trouble. Try some lubrication, line things up in arious orientations, try moving the zipper more slowly slowly, try press pushing the top and bottom of the slider closer together using pliers, etc... Don't give up. You don't need to buy a new zipper to fix one. You can sometimes get away with fitting a new slider in place (use a flat head screwdriver to remove the slider and pliers to push on a new slider).

Random Quotes:
- "The truth is told by those left standing"
- I asked a bunch of people the same question:
“What are the 3 things you need to know about a person before wanting to connect with them?”

You’ll never believe what happened next...

Everyone (like everyone) said the same thing:

Common ground
ie.: a  personal detail that is relatable (think where you’re from)

Similar struggle
Like some past or present challenge that you both have in common.

Johnson returned to this fertile soil in the EU referendum. He claimed EU law forbade the recycling of teabags (it didn’t), that children under eight could not blow up balloons (a packaging warning, not a ban), that the EU had blocked moves to improve cab windows on trucks to stop cyclists being crushed (in fact the European parliament had voted to improve truck design), among many others.

The EU was so used to this kind of treatment that it barely complained - except once, when Johnson told the Sunday Telegraph that the past 2000 years of European history had been marked by repeated attempts to unify Europe.

“Napoleon, Hitler, various people tried this out, and it ends tragically,” he was quoted as saying. “The EU is an attempt to do this by different methods.”

Donald Tusk, European Council president, had so far followed the EU line of desperately trying to stay out of the Brexit debate. But the former Polish prime minister said: “When I hear the EU being compared to the plans and projects of Adolf Hitler I cannot remain silent.

“Boris Johnson crossed the boundaries of a rational discourse, demonstrating political amnesia,” said Tusk, adding there was “no excuse for this dangerous blackout.”

European distaste for and hurt over British Europhobia rarely makes it into British media headlines, but it is real. And as Brexit has unfolded that Europhobia has become more bold: in the press, in headlines such as The Sun’s “EU Dirty Rats”, and in politics.

This year Johnson’s replacement as foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, accused the EU of trying to block Brexit.

“What happened to the confidence and ideals of the European dream?” Hunt asked in his speech at the Conservative Party conference. “The EU was set up to protect freedom. It was the Soviet Union that stopped people leaving.

“The lesson from history is clear,” he said. “If you turn the EU club into a prison, the desire to get out won’t diminish.”
- Romo Lampkin: I always imagined you a realist, Admiral, not one to indulge a vain hope at the cost of lives. But then, everyone has his limits. "Sine qua non", as they say.

Admiral William Adama: "Without which not."

Romo Lampkin: Yes. Those things we deem essential, without which we cannot bear living, without which life in general loses its specific value... becomes abstract.

Admiral William Adama: You may have a point, Counselor.

Romo Lampkin: And while I'm on a roll, Tom Zarek may not be an ideal president, but we could do worse.

Admiral William Adama: You're right. There are limits to my realism. Goodbye, Counselor.
- The software giant said in a statement: "We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating."

Users have complained that they have lost files from the C:/Users/[username]/Documents/ folder. One user complained that he had lost 220 gigabytes of files which he had accumulated over 23 years.

Another user said he had files on one hard drive blown away while the SSD in his machine did not seem to work very well.

The company releases two updates for Windows 10 every year, one in April and the other in October.
As a workaround for those who had already lost files, the company advised, "If you have manually checked for updates and believe you have an issue with missing files after an update, please minimise your use of the affected device and contact us directly.

"We will provide an update when we resume rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to customers."

It said Windows 10, version 1809 and Windows Server, version 1809 were both affected.
- IF YOU have fallen victim to your lunch being stolen at work, you’re not the only one. Almost one in two Aussies have experienced this callous act — and the main culprit could be closer than you think.

Deliveroo recently conducted a nationwide survey based on 1000 respondents, revealing that almost half have had their lunch stolen from work. Of those, 88 per cent were swiped from the communal fridge and 12 per cent from their desk.

But shockingly, yes shockingly, 9 per cent reported to have had their lunch taken while it was heating up in the microwave — brutal.

And keep your eye on the person sitting next to you because they’ve topped the list of potential suspects with 24 per cent claiming the thief is their desk buddy, while 23 per cent insist it’s the office junior. Meanwhile, a further 14 per cent are pointing the finger at the CEO.
- “The fact that the Americans tried to make the plane invisible does not mean that it really is. And it’s not for nothing that the Pentagon suddenly announced the need for additional F-35 tests, recently. This is clear evidence that the US themselves do not believe in the competence of F-35 against the S-300 air defense systems,” the news site added.
- Alchian and Allen want your study of economics to be “interesting and enjoyable.” They caution: “You’ll be brainwashed — in the ‘desirable’ sense of removing erroneous beliefs. You will begin to suspect that a vast majority of what people popularly believe about economic events is at least misleading and often wrong.” The authors give a long list of erroneous beliefs that people hold. Here’s a tiny sample: Employers pay for employer-provided insurance; larger incomes for some people require smaller incomes for others; minimum wage legislation helps the unskilled and minorities; foreign imports reduce the number of domestic jobs; “equal pay for equal work” laws aid women, minorities and the young; labor unions protect the natural brotherhood and collective well-being of workers against their natural enemies, employers; and we cannot compete in a world in which most foreign wages are lower than wages paid to domestic workers.
- "Many websites use CDN services for caching, and we’ve noticed that often the skimmer code will be cached in the CDN and stay active there long after the skimmer is cleaned up from an affected site. As a site owner, be sure to purge any caching you are performing after your organisation is hit with a skimmer like this," RiskIQ said.
- "Terrorists and criminals are using encrypted communications to avoid detection and disruption and it makes the task of conducting an investigation, to say nothing of disrupting terror attacks or criminal activity, more difficult than it has ever been," Dutton said.

"Society has long seen value in enabling our law enforcement agencies to access telephone communications and related data with the appropriate warrants and justifiable cause. Now, this is legitimate activity that helps to protect our community. So it defies common sense that this access should be denied simply because the mode of communication has changed."

He slammed "multi-billion dollar Silicon Valley companies" whom he said were opposing the Bill.

These were "the same companies that need to be hounded to pay tax in Australia and other jurisdictions, and the same companies who have misused personal data to commercial advantage", Dutton said.

"And it should be noted, these yes, are the same companies who protest about having to help police with the encryption problem, whilst operating their businesses in less democratic countries and accepting at the same time a compromise on privacy to allow their presence in those growth markets."

Dutton also went into detail on organised crime, both national and international, money laundering and drug trafficking in his speech.

The draft of the proposed legislation, officially known as the Telecommunications and Other Legislation Amendment (Assistance and Access) Bill 2018, was released for public comment on 14 August. The period for comment ended on 10 September and as of Wednesday morning, the government had released 343 submissions online.
