- notice how different things are in other parts of the world? Repairing your car on the side of a busy road over multiple days is almost completely unacceptable in the West. It seems to be common elsewhere? Notice complete lack of safety equipment, child labour, constant imminent danger, hacks/workarounds to deal with problems, etc... That said, notice their intelligence, innovation, use of knowledge from multiple fields, etc? A lot of cool stuff being done in poorer parts of the world? Easy to see why wealthier countries might want to chase after some of these people as skilled migrants? Better skilled, probably willing to work for less, and able to stretch resrouces further?

- what's surprising is that a lot of big brands such as Hyundai, Toyota, Nike, etc... outsource to such relatively low resourced/economically poor environments? There's so much branding and talk about quality control but these parts seem to be made and in almost backyard like operations? Given the nature of sweat shops, continuation of past imperial/colonial/foreign policy I guess it makes sense? In a way it reminds me of local sweat shops (which many developed countries officially deny but still have)? It doesn't hit you what the terms Made in China, Pakistan, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, etc... means until you see it?

- there are car channels that dabble in car design and manufacture but they're not as interesting because they don't tell you how particular components work, how they fit together, what makes certain cars special, etc... I guess that's the nature of trade secrets, intellectual property, a facet of a competitive world, etc... The strange thing for me is how basic a lot of modern supercars/hypercars seem? The basic frame structure is covered with exotic materials and a nicely shaped body but often the engine/powerplant and transmission/power train is from something unexpected? It can be pretty mundane, be shared between between cars at very different price points, etc...

Powertrain
The powertrain of the Mercedes-AMG ONE is rated at 782 kW (1,063 PS; 1,049 hp) through a hybrid drivetrain that shares many features with modern Formula One cars. The car has five motors with different functions on board: one internal combustion engine (ICE) and four electric motors.
Internal combustion engine
The Mercedes-AMG ONE utilises a modified Mercedes-Benz PU106B Hybrid engine, a 1.6-litre turbocharged 90-degree V6 engine from the Mercedes-AMG F1 W06 Formula One car, as confirmed by Mercedes-AMG board member Ola Källenius.[16][17] Modifications are done to the engine due to the engine's illegality in RPM idle and redline. The head of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, states that the engine will be at 1,280 rpm when idle, and at 11,000 rpm when at its redline limit.[18] However, the engine will only last for 50,000 km (31,000 mi) and the owners will have to return their cars for engine refurbishment.[19] The ICE produces 422 kW (574 PS; 566 hp), with torque figures unknown because of the complex drivetrain. The top speed of this car is 219 mph (352 km/h).[20]

Pagani's first model, the Zonda, is powered by a mid-mounted DOHC V12 engine manufactured by Mercedes-Benz's AMG division. The car's design was inspired by jet fighters and the famous Sauber-Mercedes Silver Arrow Group C cars, and features several unique design elements, including its circular four pipe exhaust system.

Random Quotes:
- At its core, the Total Wellbeing Diet program features a high-protein, high-vegetable, low-glycemic-index nutritional plan – similar to the first book's 15 years ago. When the diet was initially released, it received some criticism within the scientific community, particularly for being too heavily focused on meat consumption.
Subsequently, the digital program has made the diet more accessible for vegetarians. Though it does not offer a strictly vegetarian or vegan meal plan, participants are able to swap meals from a catalogue of 150 vegetarian recipes, or swap animal proteins for vegetarian equivalents such as tofu and pulses. In 2010, a paper in Public Health Nutrition found the diet book to be "a successful delivery mechanism for lifestyle advice".

"Google is an effective monopoly and by withholding access to such timely, accurate and important information they show clearly how they impact what access Australians have to that," the spokesman said.

- The state's Law Enforcement and Conduct Commission (LECC) has quietly launched a review of the use of consorting powers, with preliminary findings revealing Aboriginal Australians are dramatically over-represented in the use of the law in NSW.
According to the memo, which has subsequently been circulated to a parliamentary committee investigating high rates of Aboriginal incarceration in NSW, the LECC's analysis found 40% of people subject to consorting laws in NSW between February 2019 and June 2020 were Indigenous.
...
O'Farrell said at the time: "These new laws will be additional tools in the police armoury to help them protect innocent lives and bring those involved in criminal gangs behind drive-by shootings before the courts."
The laws allow police to charge people for communicating four or more times with convicted criminals, with an associated jail term of up to three years. The new laws substantially increased penalties for consorting in circumstances where a formal warning had been issued by police, increasing jail sentences from six months to three years.
But concern that police were using the laws outside of what was intended by the legislation have been raised almost since their inception.
In 2012 the ABC revealed the first man to be jailed under the laws was a 21-year-old Inverell man born with an intellectual disability who was sentenced to between nine and 12 months' jail for a series of shopping trips and walks with three friends who had prior convictions.
In 2016 the NSW ombudsman released a damning report which found police were using the laws for minor crimes and targeting a number of vulnerable groups including Aboriginal people, children and the homeless.
The three-year review found an "exceptionally high police error rate" in the use of the laws against young people in particular, finding that more than three-quarters of warnings issued about children were "unlawful as they relied on a mistaken belief that the person was a 'convicted offender' at the time".
The new data from the LECC also shows the impact of the laws on Indigenous Australians has not improved since the ombudsman's review. The 2016 report found Aboriginal people made up 38% of all people issued with an official warning for consorting. The number of Indigenous children subject to the laws had decreased to 25% from almost 60%.

- The industry super sector has rejected Josh Frydenberg's "Your Money, Your Super" package of changes to superannuation as a "gift" to for-profit fund operators that will enable them to continue making billions in profits each year off dud retirement savings schemes.
According to Productivity Commission data, industry funds, which are run only for the profit of members, systematically outperform retail funds, which are run to profit financial institutions such as banks.
But peak body Industry Super Australia (ISA) will argue in submissions to a review of the package of laws that the proposed legislation would give the for-profit sector an unfair advantage by exempting many of its products from measures designed to curb fees and expose poorly performing funds.

A bipartisan group of state attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Wednesday both filed lawsuits against Facebook, accusing the social media giant of anticompetitive acquisitions and putting the company firmly in the antitrust hot seat.
The state AG lawsuit — led by New York's Letitia James (D) along with 47 others — alleges Facebook sought to maintain its monopoly power by acquiring potential rivals, including WhatsApp and Instagram.
"For nearly a decade, Facebook has used its dominance and monopoly power to crush smaller rivals and snuff out competition, all at the expense of everyday users," James said in a statement. "Today, we are taking action to stand up for the millions of consumers and many small businesses that have been harmed by Facebook's illegal behavior."

According to the court papers, Schulte has been in solitary confinement and not been outdoors in over two years under special administrative measures designed to severely restrict an inmate's communications and interactions with others.
Prosecutors say the measures are necessary after Schulte tried to leak even more classified information using a contraband cellphone that had been smuggled into the jail. They said he declared an "information war" and was "prepared to burn down the United States government."
Schulte's filthy cell, the size of a parking space, is infested with rodents, rodent droppings, cockroaches and mold and there is no heating, air conditioning or functioning plumbing, the court papers said, while sunlight is blocked by a blacked out window. Television access is permitted for one hour per week.
The toilet operates so poorly that he lets feces partially dissolve before flushing, according to court documents, and temperatures fall so low that water in his cell turns to ice and he shivers despite wearing four sets of clothing, five sets of socks, two blankets and three sets of socks on his hands.
Bright lights are on nonstop, he isn't allowed outside recreation and his access to commissary and visitation is severely restricted, while his access to books or legal materials is banned or severely limited, along with visits to dentists or doctors, despite heart-related issues, Schulte maintained.
In his prison unit on the jail's 10th floor, silverware and cups are banned so "inmates are forced to eat and drink with their hands like the caged animals that they are," the filing said. Several men awaiting trial in cells nearby are charged in terrorism cases.
When he is moved outside his cell, he is "shackled from head-to-toe like Hannibal," the filing added, referencing the fictional Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer from the 1991 horror movie "The Silence of the Lambs."
Sabrina Shroff, one of Schulte's lawyers, said he was not exaggerating with his claims in a jail long derided by inmates as harsh for defendants awaiting trial.
"I think that everyone on Mr. Schulte's defense team is horrified by the conditions in which he has to live daily," she said.

- Long-term health effects
Soldiers who claimed to have been exposed to chemical warfare have often presented with unusual medical conditions which has led to much controversy. The lack of information has left doctors, patients, and their families in the dark in terms of prognosis and treatment. Nerve agents such as sarin, tabun, and soman are believed to have the most significant long-term health effects.[83] Chronic fatigue and memory loss have been reported to last up to three years after exposure. In the years following World War One, there were many conferences held in attempts to abolish the use of chemical weapons all together, such as the Washington Naval Conference (1921–22), Geneva Conference (1923–25) and the World Disarmament Conference (1933). The United States was an original signatory of the Geneva Protocol in 1925, but the US Senate did not ratify it until 1975.
Although the health effects are generally chronic in nature, the exposures were generally acute. A positive correlation has been proven between exposure to mustard agents and skin cancers, other respiratory and skin conditions, leukemia, several eye conditions, bone marrow depression and subsequent immunosuppression, psychological disorders and sexual dysfunction.[84] Chemicals used in the production of chemical weapons have also left residues in the soil where the weapons were used. The chemicals that have been detected can cause cancer and can affect the brain, blood, liver, kidneys and skin.[85]
Despite the evidence in support of long-term health effects, there are studies that show just the opposite. Some US veterans who were closely affected by chemical weapons showed no neurological evidence in the following years. These same studies showed that one single contact with chemical weapons would be enough to cause long-term health effects.[86]

- Victorian public hospitals are being sued by young doctors who are desperate to fight back against years of "wage theft and ridiculous hours".
It comes as the first of about 30 planned lawsuits was filed in the Federal Court against Peninsula Health, with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) warning a "considerable larger" health service was the next to be hit with a legal claim.
More than 10,500 Victorian junior doctors have been invited to join class actions against other health services over what unions allege is widespread underpayment of wages.
Dr Karla Villafana-Soto said she could not even count how much she was owed in unpaid wages in the past eight years of her medical career but estimated the figure to be in the "many, many thousands".
"This is wage theft," she said.
"It's a measure of last resort to use these words, but we've been advocating for years and health services just aren't listening, so to put it in these words is the only way we can be heard."
Dr Villafana-Soto – who said she'd be forced to work two to three hours overtime every shift – recalled one moment where she queried why the hours had gone unpaid but was "brushed off" by her head of unit.
Instead, she was summoned to a meeting where it was suggested she "wasn't as efficient as another doctor".
"It was completely demoralising," she told NCA NewsWire.
"We know this is a hard career and we enjoy that hard work, but when work becomes this dangerous, when you're doing ridiculous hours, sleep-deprived, stressed and then gagged – it really does hurt.
"This isn't a junior doctor versus senior doctor problem, it's a system and culture and problem, and we need to change this now or we'll see a massive exodus of young and capable doctors."
The Victorian Branch of the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation (ASMOF) is leading the class actions, together with the junior doctors.
AMA Victoria is also supporting the action, represented by law firms Gordon Legal and Hayden Stephens and Associates.

- The end of humankind? It may be coming sooner than we think, thanks to hormone-disrupting chemicals that are decimating fertility at an alarming rate around the globe. A new book called Countdown, by Shanna Swan, an environmental and reproductive epidemiologist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, finds that sperm counts have dropped almost 60% since 1973. Following the trajectory we are on, Swan's research suggests sperm counts could reach zero by 2045. Zero. Let that sink in. That would mean no babies. No reproduction. No more humans. Forgive me for asking: why isn't the UN calling an emergency meeting on this right now?
The chemicals to blame for this crisis are found in everything from plastic containers and food wrapping, to waterproof clothes and fragrances in cleaning products, to soaps and shampoos, to electronics and carpeting. Some of them, called PFAS, are known as "forever chemicals", because they don't breakdown in the environment or the human body. They just accumulate and accumulate – doing more and more damage, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. Now, it seems, humanity is reaching a breaking point.
Swan's book is staggering in its findings. "In some parts of the world, the average twentysomething woman today is less fertile than her grandmother was at 35," Swan writes. In addition to that, Swan finds that, on average, a man today will have half of the sperm his grandfather had. "The current state of reproductive affairs can't continue much longer without threatening human survival," writes Swan, adding: "It's a global existential crisis." That's not hyperbole. That's just science.
As if this wasn't terrifying enough, Swan's research finds that these chemicals aren't just dramatically reducing semen quality, they are also shrinking penis size and volume of the testes. This is nothing short of a full-scale emergency for humanity.
Swan's book echoes previous research, which has found that PFAS harms sperm production, disrupts the male hormone and is correlated to a "reduction of semen quality, testicular volume and penile length". These chemicals are literally confusing our bodies, making them send mix messages and go haywire.

- With all this in mind, the U.S. government, among others, has long worked to acquire foreign threat representative systems, especially aircraft and air defense systems, on the open market and via other means for FME, testing, and training purposes. In one particularly famous example, U.S. special operations forces, including elements of the U.S. Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, snatched a Libyan Mi-25 Hind helicopter gunship from neighboring Chad in 1988. During the Cold War, the U.S. Air Force also set up an entire top-secret squadron, known as the Red Eagles, equipped with foreign jets that had been smuggled out of various countries or otherwise recovered, including some that had been partially destroyed, to test and train against.
All told, no matter what might have ultimately happened to the Pantsir-S1 that the U.S. military reportedly picked up in Libya, it's certain that intelligence analysts took all available opportunities to glean any additional information they could from it.

- Researchers have managed to keep tabs on 1 million different neurons in the brains of mice at one time – taking scientists an impressive step closer towards one day being able to track the very-complex activity of human brains.
The key is an innovation that's being called 'light beads microscopy'. It improves on current two-photon microscopy, using lasers to trigger introduced fluorescence in living cells. As the cells are lit up, scientists can see how they're moving and interacting.
With light beads microscopy, scientists can get the speed, scale, and resolution required to map a mouse brain in detail as its neural activity changes. The near-simultaneous tracking can last for as long as the light beads are able to stay illuminated.
"Understanding the nature of the brain's densely interconnected network requires developing novel imaging techniques that can capture the activity of neurons across vastly separated brain regions at high speed and single-cell resolution," says neuroscientist Alipasha Vaziri, from the Rockefeller University in New York.
"We need to capture many neurons at distant parts of the brain at the same time at high resolution. These parameters are almost mutually exclusive."
In other words, current microscopy techniques have to choose between zooming in to get enough detail and missing out on everything that's going on, or zooming out to see the whole picture and losing some of the finer details.
Light beads microscopy is able to overcome these limitations by removing the dead time between laser pulses – using a cavity of mirrors it splits each single strong pulse into 30 smaller sub pulses of different strengths, which are then all able to reach different depths while keeping the same level of fluorescence.
This means multiple depths can be visualized in the same pulse, giving scientists a deeper, faster look at what's happening. The scientists have now demonstrated the technique to track 1 million neurons at once in a mouse brain.
"There's no good reason why we didn't do this five years ago," says Vaziri. "It would have been possible – the microscope and laser technology existed. No one thought of it."
Through light beads microscopy, the scientists are hoping to be able to track the interactions between the sensory, motor, and visual regions of the brain – not just in mice but in other animals too.
Interpreting and understanding the neural activity that's being recorded will require another step forward, but the new study pushes forward the idea of what's possible with this kind of microscopic analysis.
The better we can see inside the brain, the better we can work out how it operates – whether that's the interplay between individual nerve cells or finding out which parts of the brain correspond to which feelings and emotions.
"Light beads microscopy will allow us to investigate biological questions in a way that had not been possible before," says Vaziri.
