I always wondered who it was that was occasionally sending me SPAM emails regarding goods that they were trying to sell. It now makes more sense. Sometimes giant factories sell direct to public, other times they contract out to manufacturers (such as Toyota, Apple, Nike, Hyundai, Reebok, fashion houses, etc...). One thing that is interesting is that it's generally pretty difficult to get information on advanced technologies online. Stuff like rocket technology, medical development, even advanced electronics, etc... I guess that's the nature of trade secrets, intellectual property, a facet of a competitive world, etc...

I probably have more respect for scientists, academics, factory workers, etc... in poorer parts of the world then in the US/West because they're able to achieve more with less? Problems with waste disposal (and in general) could be significantly reduced if people in the US/West were willing to push a bit more?

- advanced manufacturing space, defense, are all sort of linked. If you look around you'll notice lots of dual use technologies. One really strange thing for me is that Chinese/Asian manufacturing makes greater use of automation/robotics then Western manufacturing. You would have thought it was the other way around? The "technological dispute" between US and China makes more sense now? If China becomes more advanced how does the US and other Western countries compete? Even if you slow them down, it gives you more time to come up with a plan to defeat the Chinese? It make sense why some countries are so focused on making money from defense now. Seems like a high automation, high profit margin arena for many areas?

Dr Cheang is fascinated by why to this day, stately homes in Britain are filled with Chinese things.
She says there's a strong myth that Pekingese are 'special palace dogs'.
"They become imperial loot. They become these treasures that formerly belonged to the emperor. Hence the decision to call this one dog that's gifted to Queen Victoria, Looty," she says.
"It says a lot about how acceptable it was to loot. This was normal. The British had this God-given right to go out into the world and take stuff."
Hilary Du Crow has been breeding Pekingese dogs around the world since she was 10.
She says the Queen having the dog was a big endorsement.
"The fact that the Queen had one is clearly an influence on why it became such a big deal," she says.
In the decades that followed other Pekingese were brought over.
"The dogs that you have today were descended from ones that came out later, like about 15 years later," she says.
By 1901 a breeding population was established, and the dogs became very fashionable and very popular.

Scientists have discovered what drives the delicate and complex microcosm of tiny terraces, pyramids and craters found on the surface of ice. These miniature structures, hidden beneath a thin premelting layer of water, develop and evolve because of a dynamic interplay between the gas, liquid and solid phases—which exist simultaneously.
In a new paper titled "How ice grows from premelting films and water droplets," published in Nature Communications, researchers have modelled the process of early-stage snowflake creation.
Dr. David Sibley, of Loughborough's School of Science, said the structure of the ice shape is dependent on a number of factors including surrounding temperature and pressure conditions. He said, "Ice growth is a dynamic process that can occur either by being fed by water that freezes, or through the freezing of water vapour from the surrounding air. However, these are more similar than they at first they appear, since the interface between ice and air has on it a microscopic liquid film of water—sometimes termed a premelting layer. The way in which water is transferred between these vapour, liquid and solid phases is not well understood. However, our new mathematical model explicitly takes into account the premelting layer, giving new understanding of its involvement in the ice-growth process."
Understanding how ice crystals grow and the formation of structures—such as snowflakes—will allow scientists to learn more about climate change. Dr. Sibley said, "Snowflakes at an early stage are made of one single ice crystallite. Their shape is important to predict the scattering of radiation from the Sun and has an impact on global warming. The shape of ice crystals is dictated by the growth rates of different crystal facets, and our theory helps in understanding how the growth rates change with the surrounding humidity. At low humidity ice grows mainly from colliding vapour molecules, but if humidity is large enough, it grows directly from a thick premelting film, by the same mechanism of ice growth from bulk undercooled water."

My average annual return following these rules over 3 years is 56%, with a portfolio of around 20 stocks. It's a strategy that works for me, but I can also see bigger potential gains in commodities like oil and gas. I just can't understand how investing in them exploring an area, which could have nothing is smart.
