Mass Downloader Script, Random Stuff, and More

- as I said in another post I'm working on a medical search engine part time. It hasn't been easy especially seeing as a lot of stuff is in the cloud now and offline databases are becoming more rare. The following is the code for a very simple mass downloader:
- description is as follows:
# I need to build a mass downloader for a medical search engine
# prototype that I want to work on. This is a very simple prototype
# that I think may work as the basis for further development. If
# you're wondering this is simpler then a lot of crawlers/downloaders
# out there which means it may miss out on some files but is generally
# much quicker.
#
# If you're wondering yes there are other options then this but most
# have their own set of problems. I can't use something like Selenium,
# Sikuli, wget, etc... because they're inefficient, require use of GUI,
# download everything before actually accepting/rejecting files, etc...
# This will work for a basic prototype. If I need something more I can
# always built out and upwards
#
# As this is the very first version of the program it may be VERY buggy.
# Please test prior to deployment in a production environment.

Random Quotes:
- ROME: Italy's anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) has drafted a law aimed at preventing and treating the rising phenomenon of addiction to mobile phones and computers, particularly among the young.
The bill seeks to treat so-called "no-mobile-phone phobia" (also known as "nomophobia") or the fear of not being able to get regular access to social networks or messaging apps.

It proposes education programmes for parents to detect excessive mobile phone use in children.

The bill also lays out plans for "education towards for a conscientious use of the internet and social networks" in schools and universities.

Nomophobia particularly affects young people, often preventing them getting a good night's sleep.

Half of Italians aged 15-20 consult their mobile phones at least 75 times a day, Italian media on Monday quoted research by the National Association of Technological Dependance as saying.

Around 61 percent of Italians use their tablet or mobile phone in bed, according to another report published in June, with the figure rising to 81 percent among 18-34 year olds.

The ruling M5S said in its draft that mobile phone addiction is comparable to gambling addiction, causing "interference with dopamine production".
- Alas, demonisation just assists the true economic function of keeping people out of work – a percentage of joblessness, explains the Reserve Bank website, is maintained because when “conditions in the labour market are tight, there will be upward pressure on wage growth and inflation”. If you require a plain English translation, it is this: you can terrify workers out of demanding wage rises and keep their labour cheap if jobs are scarce, and the alternative, unemployment, is an experience both stigmatised and deplorable. How remarkably convenient for employers.
- But the Air Force had always known that stealth aircraft are not invisible or invincible. In fact, during Operation Desert Storm, contrary to popular belief, U.S. Army AH-64 Apache gunships made the first air raids on Iraq rather than the F-117. Those attack helicopters had one mission—that was to eliminate Iraqi low frequency early warning radars operating in the VHF and UHF-bands. Those radars can detect and track stealth aircraft like the F-117, which are designed to operated against radars operating in the C, X and Ku-bands. The Apaches cleared a path for the stealth fighters to proceed to their targets deep inside Iraq undetected.

Subsequent stealth aircraft like the F-22 and F-35 are also designed to operate against high-frequency fire control radars. The concept behind fifth-generation fighters—which in some ways are the direct successors to the F-117 tactical stealth attack aircraft—is that they operate with the enemy potentially knowing that something is present in their air space. The enemy just can’t do anything about their presence however—putting it basically—or so the theory goes. But, despite its public stance, the Air Force has never operated its stealth aircraft without the presence of Navy electronic warfare aircraft like Prowler or jammers.

Stealthy strategic bombers like the B-2 however, are designed to operate more like submarines—that is they operate without their presence being noticed. The massive bombers are optimized for “broad band all-aspect” stealth, which means they are able to remain unnoticed even in the presence of low frequency radars by hiding in the background noise and clutter. But even then, the Pentagon didn’t fully anticipate how quickly the Russians and Chinese would develop low frequency radars with performance to threaten even the B-2. “We've had the ability to map our threats in real time in the B-2 for a while with our Defense Management System (DMS),” said an Air Force official. “But the growth in the EW [electronic warfare] spectrum wasn't reasonably anticipated and thus precipitated an upgrade into a new DMS.” But even the B-2 is not going to be able keep pace with the evolving threat, that’s why the new Air Force LRS-B will be optimized to defeat those low frequency systems.
- What at all does the US want on this world?  Why do they hate Russia with passion?  If you buy Russia's this, we will sanction you.  If you buy Russia's that, we will sanction you. If you buy Russia's here, we will sanction you. If you buy Russia's there, we will sanction you. What at all therefore is wrong with the US? Turkey, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and U.A.E will all face sanctions if they buy S-400.  Also, countries and firms involved in the Nord Stream 2 pipelines will face sanctions if they refuse to abandon the project.  Why?

The real problem for the US is a loss of weapon market to Russia not "compromise the security of the F-35", just more of the lie, cheat and steal motto.
- Worse, there’s a chance that Chinese spies have already hacked the project. Reports back in 2009 quoted unnamed sources who said ‘intruders’ were able to copy several terabytes of design data. A British media story in 2012 similarly claimed BAE had been subject to 18 months of cyber attacks. Lockheed said it didn’t believe anyone managed to steal anything, but a report by 2013 the Defence Science Board lent credence to the idea.
- Among the reported deficiencies: Some pilots have been forced to limit flight speed to avoid damaging the F-35's airframe or stealth coating, spikes in cockpit pressure can cause "excruciating" ear and sinus pain among pilots, and difficulties in landing the F-35C on aircraft carriers because of problems with the helmet-mounted display and night vision camera.
- "President Trump is expected to formally nominate Patrick M. Shanahan to be his permanent defense secretary as soon as next week, two administration officials tell Fox News. This, after an internal Pentagon investigation concluded that the acting defense secretary did not show any bias in favor of his former employer, aerospace giant Boeing. Shanahan worked at Boeing for over 30 years before coming to the Pentagon as then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’s deputy at the start of the Trump administration.

Shanahan’s nomination had been held up by the White House since the Pentagon inspector general opened an investigation into Shanahan’s conduct following a report in Politico days after taking over for Mattis alleging Shanahan called Boeing-rival Lockheed Martin’s advanced F-35 program “f—ed up” and said the company didn’t know how to run a defense program following years of cost overruns and delays to the fifth-generation fighter jet.

Shanahan has been serving as acting defense chief since the president forced Jim Mattis to leave the job early following his resignation in December. Shanahan faces a potentially contentious confirmation hearing in the Republican-controlled Senate in order to assume the role as defense secretary...."
- Through multiple Freedom of Information requests, Military Times obtained data for every Class A through Class C aviation mishap that has occurred since fiscal year 2011. More than 8,600 records were obtained. An analysis of the data shows manned warplane accidents have spiked nearly 40 percent since 2013, the year the mandated budget cuts known as sequestration took effect. The records can be searched by aircraft type, base, fiscal year and location.
- Plenty of putts are missed before the putterhead ever moves. Why? Because of misreads. It's difficult to quantify the importance of green-reading -- since a putt's break depends in part on how hard it's hit -- but new research I've done with Columbia business school Ph.D. student Dongwook Shin indicates that about 40 percent of the strokes Tour pros lose on the greens is due to green-reading errors. (Directional mis-hits account for 40 percent and distance errors for 20 percent.)
