Computer/Electronics Data Drive Recovery Tips, Random Stuff, and More

- occasionally, I get into trouble with regards to data loss and recovery but I haven't really lost large amounts of data ever due to a multitude of different strategies/options to help me deal with this. I have dabbled in electronics repair since I was young so I have a rough idea of how to deal with most hardware failures. The trouble with doing this on the side and not professionally though is that I lack access to the most up to date knowledge, equipment, and parts are hard to come by or I don't know where to source it from. That said, I've never really lost any significant amount of data so we'll explore the reasons why in this post

- flash drive repair. Most of the time when I see them die they fail in read only mode. This is extremely convenient as it means you can backup your data still. That said, to restore the drive to full function you need to delve into the electronics. The problem is that things are so small that you may require specialised soldering equipment

- with some drives simply trying a different reader/computer is enough to access your lost data. If you've played arround with error correction/firmware you'll realise some optical drives work better then others which is the basis of this theory and practice
- have multiple backups if possible. USB flash drives are remarkbly large and cheapish now and there a lot of NAS/DAS systems that are able to take automated copies of any USB drive connected to it making quick/easy backups possible for many people
- always have spare drives that are the same drive or larger then your primary drive which will help to take an image of your data quickly if possible via a drive dock. You can use forensics software after if your data was mangled

- sometimes software issues can appear to be hardware issues. Simply copying your data, reinstalling your operating system, and copying your data back may work. You won't know until you've tried. Be prepared for the job to take hours or multiple days. Get used to the basics (at least) of the world of data forensics. Straight copy vs bit based copy. Turn it read only mode if possible during this process to maintain data integrity. Recover from cache if possible if you can't get back original copy of data. A few times in my life I've discovered "discs of death". One was an optical disc and another was a SSD/HDD with a corrupt OS. Inserting optical disc or drive into a system would cause problems/random reboots. I thought it was hardware failure but if I copied drive contents to another drive via drive dock same problem across all HDD/SSD so I plugged into a dock and attempted to do copy and it worked fine. My suspicion is that it was triggering a low level instruction that the computer didn't like but didn't understand it until I bothered to think about it

- try to avoid using unrealiable drives. Saves an enormous amount of trouble. If you're using NAS/DAS try to avoid proprietary filesystems and hardware if posisble as recovery will be more difficult afterwards if there is a problem. Note that, most of the time companies will try to cover up issues until there is unquestionable evidence that a major problem is in play

Random Quotes:
- The Anglo-Zanzibar War was a military conflict fought between the United Kingdom and the Zanzibar Sultanate on 27 August 1896. The conflict lasted between 38 and 45 minutes, marking it as the shortest recorded war in history.[3] The immediate cause of the war was the death of the pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini on 25 August 1896 and the subsequent succession of Sultan Khalid bin Barghash. The British authorities preferred Hamud bin Muhammed, who was more favourable to British interests, as sultan. In accordance with a treaty signed in 1886, a condition for accession to the sultanate was that the candidate obtain the permission of the British consul, and Khalid had not fulfilled this requirement. The British considered this a casus belli and sent an ultimatum to Khalid demanding that he order his forces to stand down and leave the palace. In response, Khalid called up his palace guard and barricaded himself inside the palace.

"We want some of our people to be in Rwanda," one of them replied. Lawrence shuddered. He had grown up among Hutus who had fled Tutsi oppression in Rwanda before independence in 1962, as well as Tutsis who had fled the Hutu-led pogroms that followed it. Lawrence's childhood catechist had been a Tutsi; the Hutus who worked in his family's gardens wouldn't attend his lessons. Instead, they swapped fantastic tales about how Tutsis once used their Hutu slaves as spittoons, expectorating into their mouths, instead of on the ground.

When the RPF launched its invasion, Kagame, then a senior officer in both the Ugandan army and the RPF, was in Kansas at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, studying field tactics and psyops, propaganda techniques to win hearts and minds. But after four RPF commanders were killed, he told his American instructors that he was dropping out to join the Rwandan invasion. The Americans apparently supported this decision and Kagame flew into Entebbe airport, travelled to the Rwandan border by road, and crossed over to take command of the rebels.
For the next three and a half years, the Ugandan army continued to supply Kagame's fighters with provisions and weapons, and allow his soldiers free passage back and forth across the border. In 1991, Habyarimana accused Museveni of allowing the RPF to attack Rwanda from protected bases on Ugandan territory. When a Ugandan journalist published an article in the government-owned New Vision newspaper revealing the existence of these bases, Museveni threatened to charge the journalist and his editor with sedition. The entire border area was cordoned off. Even a French and Italian military inspection team was denied access.
...
But the US was not fostering nascent democratic initiatives inside Uganda. While pressuring other countries, including Rwanda, to open up political space, Uganda's donors were allowing Museveni to ban political party activity, arrest journalists and editors, and conduct brutal counterinsurgency operations in which civilians were tortured and killed. And far from seeking stability, the US, by allowing Uganda to arm the RPF, was setting the stage for what would turn out to be the worst outbreak of violence ever recorded on the African continent. Years later, Cohen expressed regret for failing to pressure Uganda to stop supporting the RPF, but by then it was far too late.

- Unlike the prime minister, Australians grasp that reality trumps ideology. We know coronavirus is causing the shutdowns, the closed stadiums, grounded planes, cancelled weddings (mine), the stay-at-home orders, the business-as-anything-but-usual. Every new spike makes it clear; the choice coronavirus imposes on every human society is between safety or suffering. Joblessness does not result from an outbreak of laziness. It's not a mass lack of gumption.

These are the exact sort of large-scale abuses of power that the theorists seem to be always searching for and yet nothing is ever done about them. Where are the protests against those? Where are the calls for churches to start paying taxes?

- National security or national defense is the security and defense of a nation state, including its citizens, economy, and institutions, which is regarded as a duty of government.
Originally conceived as protection against military attack, national security is now widely understood to include also non-military dimensions, including the security from terrorism, minimization of crime, economic security, energy security, environmental security, food security, cyber-security etc. Similarly, national security risks include, in addition to the actions of other nation states, action by violent non-state actors, by narcotic cartels, and by multinational corporations, and also the effects of natural disasters.
Governments rely on a range of measures, including political, economic, and military power, as well as diplomacy, to safeguard the security of a nation-state. They may also act to build the conditions of security regionally and internationally by reducing transnational causes of insecurity, such as climate change, economic inequality, political exclusion, and nuclear proliferation.

- About this book:In 1993, as a 23-year-old correspondent covering the wars in the Balkans, I was initially comforted by the roar of NATO planes flying overhead. President Clinton and other western leaders had sent the planes to monitor the Bosnian war, which had killed almost 200,000 civilians. But it soon became clear that NATO was unwilling to target those engaged in brutal "ethnic cleansing." American statesmen described Bosnia as "a problem from hell," and for three and a half years refused to invest the diplomatic and military capital needed to stop the murder of innocents. In Rwanda, around the same time, some 800,000 Tutsi and opposition Hutu were exterminated in the swiftest killing spree of the twentieth century. Again, the United States failed to intervene. This time U.S. policy-makers avoided labeling events "genocide" and spearheaded the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers stationed in Rwanda who might have stopped the massacres underway. Whatever America's commitment to Holocaust remembrance (embodied in the presence of the Holocaust Museum on the Mall in Washington, D.C.), the United States has never intervened to stop genocide. This book is an effort to understand why. While the history of America's response to genocide is not an uplifting one, "A Problem from Hell" tells the stories of countless Americans who took seriously the slogan of "never again" and tried to secure American intervention. Only by understanding the reasons for their small successes and colossal failures can we understand what we as a country, and we as citizens, could have done to stop the most savage crimes of the last century.-Samantha Power

- "To his excellency, the Emir Haissam Haqqani: As-salamu Alaykum. Seems like a lifetime since you and I met in the mountains of [indecipherable town — anyone catch that?]. Then we fought on the same side. Now we fight as enemies using every weapon we have — drones, suicide bombers — to kill or maim families and children. We're like two mad men, hands around each other's throats, unable to let go, spilling each other's blood for treasure. For 18 years. No one can win such a war. I have come to believe this; I think in your heart you believe it too. So I invite you to come talk to me face-to-face. Because you and I know that it's only the men with guns who can make peace. I will be at the Kashmir Hotel in Peshawar from Tuesday — alone, apart from the four men guarding me. No drones, no satellites, no backup, you have my word. I can wait three days, no more. It's time to stop sending our young men to die. Come and talk."

If the government has its way, our universities will be hit shortly by a grand scheme of social engineering. The proposed overhaul of university fees, announced on Friday, is nothing short of radical.
While fees for subjects in health, teaching, agriculture and science will be reduced, fees for subjects in the arts, humanities and social sciences will more than double. Education Minister Dan Tehan says this will mean students can complete a degree more cheaply if they choose to study in areas where "there is expected growth in job opportunities".
...
It's tempting to see this as a step towards a university system aimed at cultivating "quiet Australians". Before and after last year's election victory, Scott Morrison spoke of these compliant compatriots: hard-working people in the suburbs who neither campaign in the streets nor follow the political news every day, and are happy for politics to happen without them.
These are the very opposite of the kind of people who are formed through a liberal arts education. Students of the humanities and social sciences are taught to ask questions about power and democracy. They're trained to be critical, curious and to think for themselves. They're trained to be active citizens who won't just faithfully leave it to others to govern without scrutiny. By discouraging students from the arts, the government makes clear it doesn't see the virtues of a certain kind of citizenship.
This proposed fee move also shift things further towards a model of universities as job factories. Universities are being tasked with churning out degrees for the purpose of directing labour into the job market. It's a crude view of education. Surely, there must remain a place for pursuing knowledge for its own sake. We must see education not as an extended exercise in economics, but essentially as an exercise in civilising the mind.

- In his May 2014 interview with NBC News, Snowden accused the U.S. government of trying to use one position here or there in his career to distract from the totality of his experience, downplaying him as a "low level analyst." In his words, he was "trained as a spy in the traditional sense of the word in that I lived and worked undercover overseas—pretending to work in a job that I'm not—and even being assigned a name that was not mine." He said he'd worked for the NSA undercover overseas, and for the DIA had developed sources and methods to keep information and people secure "in the most hostile and dangerous environments around the world. So when they say I'm a low-level systems administrator, that I don't know what I'm talking about, I'd say it's somewhat misleading."[19] In a June interview with Globo TV, Snowden reiterated that he "was actually functioning at a very senior level."[76] In a July interview with The Guardian, Snowden explained that, during his NSA career, "I began to move from merely overseeing these systems to actively directing their use. Many people don't understand that I was actually an analyst and I designated individuals and groups for targeting."[77] Snowden subsequently told Wired that while at Dell in 2011, "I would sit down with the CIO of the CIA, the CTO of the CIA, the chiefs of all the technical branches. They would tell me their hardest technology problems, and it was my job to come up with a way to fix them."[26]
Of his time as an NSA analyst, directing the work of others, Snowden recalled a moment when he and his colleagues began to have severe ethical doubts. Snowden said 18 to 22-year-old analysts were suddenly
"thrust into a position of extraordinary responsibility, where they now have access to all your private records. In the course of their daily work, they stumble across something that is completely unrelated in any sort of necessary sense—for example, an intimate nude photo of someone in a sexually compromising situation. But they're extremely attractive. So what do they do? They turn around in their chair and they show a co-worker ... and sooner or later this person's whole life has been seen by all of these other people."
As Snowden observed it, this behavior happened routinely every two months but was never reported, being considered one of the "fringe benefits" of the work.[78]

- In September 2002, he, along with J. Kirk Wiebe and Edward Loomis, asked the U.S. Defense Department Inspector General (DoD IG) to investigate the NSA for allegedly wasting "millions and millions of dollars" on Trailblazer, a system intended to analyze mass collection of data carried on communications networks such as the Internet. Binney had been one of the inventors of an alternative system, ThinThread, which was shelved when Trailblazer was chosen instead. Binney has also been publicly critical of the NSA for spying on U.S. citizens, saying of its expanded surveillance after the September 11, 2001 attacks that "it's better than anything that the KGB, the Stasi, or the Gestapo and SS ever had"[10] as well as noting Trailblazer's ineffectiveness and unjustified high cost compared to the far less intrusive ThinThread.[11] He was furious that the NSA hadn't uncovered the 9/11 plot and stated that intercepts it had collected but not analyzed likely would have garnered timely attention with his leaner more focused system.[8]

The concerns it caused neighbouring countries reminded Mr Turnbull of what the powerful city-state of Athens told the much smaller city-state of Melos in Book 5: "Justice is only found between equals in power, as to the rest the strong do as they will and the weak suffer as they must".

- Turkmenistan's leader Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has penned a poem celebrating wheat and the farmers that grow it, state media in the Central Asian country reported on Tuesday.
Berdymukhamedov is portrayed by local media as a prolific author, poet and composer, while reverence for wheat is a tradition deeply rooted in the Soviet Union that oil-rich Turkmenistan separated from in 1991.
The poem published in the state newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan hailed wheat as a "wonderful cereal, miracle seed."
"I wish success to the farmer, the whole world warms itself with wheat," read the poem attributed to Berdymukhamedov.
In a report shown on tightly controlled state television, Berdymukhamedov said that the verses had been inspired by the sight of "fields of waving wheat" during his recent working trips through the country.
"When you harvest wheat with your own hands or at the wheel of a combine harvester, special feelings awaken in your soul," Berdymukhamedov explained.
"Because bread is not just a food product, it is an invaluable gift from the Earth to man."
Several leaders in former Soviet states are fond of posing for photographs in fields of wheat and other crops, continuing a custom that dates back to communist bosses like Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev.
The 63-year-old Berdymukhamedov cut his teeth as a personal dentist and then health minister under Sapamurat Niyazov, an even more eccentric leader who was notorious for renaming months of the year after himself and his mother.
Niyazov, self-styled 'Father of the Turkmen,' died in 2006, enabling Berdymukhamedov, who is also well-known for his love of horses and bicycles, to ascend to the presidency with support from the country's powerful security bloc.
