Wikipedia List Data Scan Pack, Random Stuff, and More

- this script pack helps analyse lists of Wikipedia profiles for commonalities. I built it after noticing a lot of commonalities in people's background for particular occupations. It sort of confirmed my gut feel that people are often lying (to others and themselves) about how they came up through the system. There were funnel/choke points for people in a lot of different occupations. Download it here:
wikipedia_list_data_scan_pack-1.02.zip

Wolff Responds -  The Curse of Billionaires
- description is as follows:
HOW TO RUN/USAGE INSTRUCTIONS
1) Please read through entire README file. Check comments in both scripts to
understand what they do and how they work
2) Modify and run wikipedia_list_data_scan.sh
3) Run mine_wikipedia_data.sh against relevant target cache directory or on
it's own with no parameters to process all files in cache directory

VERSION HISTORY
# 1.00 - works. Variables could be renamed better? Lots of test code.
#        Was very simple as it's basically the same code from
#        other keyword bias scripts that I previously worked on
#        http://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2020/02/dnsamazon-s3githubblogspotwordpress.html
#        https://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2020/02/web-server-global-sampling.html

#        https://dtbnguyen.blogspot.com/2017/05/news-homepage-bias-check-random-stuff.html
# 1.01 - code cleanup
# 1.02 - reduced total number of scripts to two. Code cleanup. Have left some
#        test code for possible future debugging purposes

# wikipedia_list_data_scan.sh
#
# Like others I like to study societal structures and how they work,
# funnel/choke points, commonalities, etc... This script is designed to
# help facilitate research into this by downloading relevant articles
# from Wikipedia lists and looking for relevant common words across
# people's profiles.
#
# Relevant links to understand the code are the following:
# https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World%27s_Billionaires
# https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_actors
#
# I built this after noticing a lot of points of commonality
# between well known actors, politicians, scientists, billionaires, etc...
# It's obviously pretty simple and isn't supposed to be taken too
# seriously. Drop to the bottom and decomment/comment the relevant
# lines and run script to make it work.
#
# You'll need to modify it to focus in on specific types of people
# and to be honest I was only really interested and had time to
# analyse a small set of people. I've included only a small subset
# of keyword commonalities files but haven't included cache files
# due to their size.
#
# I took code and ideas from older scripts to speed up development:

#
# As this is the very first version of the program it may be VERY buggy.
# Please test prior to deployment in a production environment.
++++
# mine_wikipedia_data.sh
#
# This script is designed to be run against a target directory
# containing cache files after wikipedia_list_data_scan.sh is run
# or else can be run with no arguments to process all files in the
# cache directory.
#
# Note, that even on small lists of people data processing can take
# an unexpectedly long time to process. You're better off running this
# script overnight for larger samples. I would have added high performance
# computing/grid style processing capabilities if this were a more
# high priority project. You're stuck with what this is for the time being.
#
# As this is the very first version of the program it may be VERY buggy.
# Please test prior to deployment in a production environment.

Random Quotes:
France "bears significant responsibility" for enabling the genocide in Rwanda and still refuses to acknowledge its true role in the 1994 horror, said a report commissioned by Kigali that was released Monday.
The damning report, commissioned in 2017 and running to nearly 600 pages, labels France a "collaborator" of the extremist Hutu regime that orchestrated the pogrom of some 800,000 people, and outright rejects the position that Paris was blind to their genocidal agenda.
"It is our conclusion that the French government bears significant responsibility for enabling a foreseeable genocide," states the Muse report, which drew on millions of pages of documents and interviews with more than 250 witnesses.
France has long been accused of not doing enough to halt the massacres, and the Muse reports follows the publication last month of a separate inquiry into the same events commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron.
But the Muse report asserts greater French culpability, saying the Duclert Commission stopped short of explaining what France was responsible for, and erred in concluding that Paris "remained blind" to the looming genocide.
More than a quarter of a century on the issue still poisons relations between France and Rwanda under President Paul Kagame, a former Tutsi rebel who has ruled the mountainous nation in Africa's Great Lakes region since the aftermath of the genocide.

Wang emphasized that the United States should refrain from using democracy and human rights as an excuse to interfere in internal affairs of other countries or to provoke confrontation that can lead to "turmoil or disaster."
The Chinese foreign minister then put forward five suggestions to the United States on ways to view bilateral relations from a strategic perspective and improve them.
He urged the US to understand and view China's development objectively and rationally and work with Beijing on a new path of peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.
Washington should also respect and tolerate the path and system chosen independently by Beijing and practice multilateralism in real sense while it should stop meddling in China's internal affairs, he said.
Wang added that the Chinese wisdom goes that "a country practicing hegemonism is doomed to fail," rather than "a country will definitely seek hegemony when growing stronger."
He noted that the future of mutual relations depends on whether the United States can accept China's peaceful rise and whether it recognizes the Chinese people's right to pursue a better life.
The top Chinese diplomat further accused the former US administration under Donald Trump of "disrupting the international system" and failing to fulfill Washington's global obligations and responsibilities.
He, however, said that Beijing welcomes the new US administration of Joe Biden's "return to multilateralism" and expressed hope that Washington would practice true multilateralism.

Professor Xu has been exploring how to use enzymes to tackle pollution and make materials more biodegradable for more than a decade.
In 2018, Professor Xu and her team created fibre mats with embedded enzymes that break down toxic chemicals, found in insecticides and chemical warfare agents, in water.
In their new study, Professor Xu and colleagues dispersed billions of polyester-eating enzymes throughout PLA and PCL beads, which are used early in the manufacturing process to create plastic products.
After melting these beads down, they shaped the material into filaments and sheets for testing.
To prevent these enzymes from falling apart before they had a chance to do their job, the researchers coated them in custom-designed polymers to keep them embedded in the plastic.
Without this supportive polymer coating, the enzymes could only partially chew through the molecular chains, leaving behind polluting microplastics.
But when wrapped in the coating, the enzymes were able to chomp these large molecules down to their building blocks, similar to unthreading a pearl necklace.
"The enzyme doesn't leave the plastic [behind]," Professor Xu said.
"Even when the plastic degrades into very small pieces, the enzymes keep working."

It really is bizarre how close the overlap is between the rightwingers who had no faith in the ability of climate scientists to predict climate change and the rightwingers who have incredible faith in other scientists' ability to invent technological solutions to climate change. Non-renewable solutions, that is.
Many of the same folk who think that batteries and pumped hydro storage are unreliable are confident we can bury carbon dioxide underground for thousands of years with no chance it could ever bubble up. And those same folk who rage against the cost of renewables are unconcerned about the cost of nuclear energy, new coal-fired power stations and, of course, CCS. And just why CCS was abandoned by the coal and electricity-fired electricity sector but is expected to work for the coal- and gas-fired hydrogen sector is the question the PM is yet to be asked. Not that he would answer if he was.
Of course, dodgy science claims aren't the only old trick the Morrison government has been recycling. The prime minister's head of the manufacturing taskforce for the National Covid-19 Coordination Commission, and architect of the so-called gas-fired recovery plan, Andrew Liveris, went on the ABC's Q+A recently to talk up all of the jobs that depend on the fossil fuel industry. To a bemused panel and an enraged audience Liveris wrongly claimed that 850,000 people were employed in the plastic, fertiliser and other industries that used gas as a "feedstock" into their production (as distinct from as a fuel in their factories). When former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull challenged the absurdity of his claim, Liveris doubled down. But the data makes clear that despite Liveris' confidence he was wrong.
According to an ACIL Allen report (2019) commissioned by Chemistry Australia only 9,232 of Australia's workforce of 11 million work in industries that use gas a feedstock in their manufacturing process. The most recent ABS data suggests direct employment in those industries employs, at a stretch, 14,000.
In the private sector, a CEO that kept spending money on imaginary technologies or who completely misunderstood the potential benefits of their product would be removed by their board or their shareholders. But it's not the invisible hand of market forces that drives Australia's obsession with fossil fuels, CCS and gas-fired recoveries, it's the visible hand of government. Research released last week by The Australia Institute shows that Australian governments spend more money each year subsidising fossil fuels than we spend on the army.
The idea of Carbon Capture and Storage, and the "clean coal" and "clean hydrogen" that could come with it, will never go away for two simple reasons: we can keep researching it forever because it will never be invented and it works as a cover story for fossil fuels whether we invent it or not.

Chinese authorities are investigating claims that a travel company mis-sold a trip to an elderly tour group, who were taken on a sales tour of a local cemetery.
The tour company in Chongqing was advertising a day trip to a "scenic spot" plus lunch, according to the Global Times. The trip cost 18 yuan or roughly $3.90, and was targeted to older tourists.
On arrival at the final destination, guests were outraged and bemused, as their "tour guide" tried to sell them burial plots.
One tourist named Zheng told the Global Times he had been mis-sold the trip by the Longyao travel agency. Embarrassingly, he had invited a dozen of his friends along for the ride.

The Air Force seeks to automate the cleaning of its fighter jets because it is a dangerous task for humans to undertake due to the chemical agents used to remove residues including gun powder, fuel, engine oil, landing gear grease and hydraulic fuel. The handling of such cleaning agents requires personnel to wear protective gear such as hazmat suits to prevent the chemicals from stripping off skin or damaging lungs, for instance.
Such cleanings, which are conducted approximately every 180 days, are necessary for preventing corrosion and prolonging the life of the aircraft.

"Me and my daughter went into her bedroom and just emptied everything and went through everything in her bedroom to see if I could find something.
"Every bag that she had and every drawer in her bedroom there were chewing gum wrappers, empty chewing gum boxes.
"I couldn't have told you how much she chewed, but I could say what I found – evidence that she was chewing them every day and was buying at least a packet a day on the way to work, sometimes two packets."
To Ms Morgan's horror, after researching the particular gum her daughter was eating, she discovered it contained aspartame and sorbitol which causes the body's salts to drastically drop.
"The coroner wouldn't put down that it was definitely from chewing gum, but aided from chewing gum," she said.
"10 years on there are so many 'whys' for me, but the biggest why is why on earth have I lost my daughter to chewing gum? I mean chewing gum, come on, it's ridiculous.
"I still can't get my head around it. She was such a loss. Bubbly, vivacious, fun loving, wouldn't harm a fly."

Wrestling with the question of what compels him to put pen to paper, Orwell runs through what he identifies as the four great motives for writing, namely:
(i) Sheer egoism. Desire to seem clever, to be talked about, to be remembered after death, to get your own back on the grown-ups who snubbed you in childhood, etc., etc. It is humbug to pretend this is not a motive, and a strong one. [. . . ]
(ii) Aesthetic enthusiasm. Perception of beauty in the external world, or, on the other hand, in words and their right arrangement. [. . .]
(iii) Historical impulse. Desire to see things as they are, to find out true facts and store them up for the use of posterity.
(iv) Political purpose. — Using the word 'political' in the widest possible sense. Desire to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other peoples' idea of the kind of society that they should strive after. [. . .]

Typically, old jets and brand-new jets cost a lot of money to fly, while newer jets cost the least. The Air Force, as the average age of the fleet suggests, has many old fighters. The F-35 is (relatively) new, but still costs a whopping $33,000 an hour to fly—well above the $25,000 an hour target set for 2025. The Air Force doesn't sound all that hopeful it will reach $25,000, either.
Finally, if the service wants those two brand-new fighters, NGAD and MR-X, in the 2030s, it will need the money to properly develop them.
One possible problem? A reduction in fighter numbers could add a new loop in a long, gradual "death spiral." A new reduction, coupled with the reduction of the 2010s, would shrink the Air Force's fighter fleet by 350 planes over 15 years.
Death spirals in military programs occur when procurement and operating costs for next-generation weapons rise beyond initial estimates, forcing the armed services to buy fewer and fewer of them.
The services then console themselves that although they have fewer weapons, each weapon is more effective, so there's no real loss in capability—except to operate in more places simultaneously and absorb battlefield losses. With each passing generation, the service's fleet of weapons grows increasingly smaller.
The Air Force says its plans to reduce the fighter fleet are "pre-decisional," which is Pentagon-speak for, "We haven't decided yet." Things could very well go another way: In January, the Air Force was reportedly considering buying more F-16s.

In the three months leading up to the Maha Kumbh, police had rounded up 183 beggars in Haridwar. They soon realised that many had lost their jobs during the pandemic. They came up with a solution. Now trained by a five-star hotel chef, the beggars have been employed as cooks across police stations of Haridwar at a salary of Rs 10,000-12,000, reports MS Nawaz.
"I had come to Haridwar from Ranchi (in Jharkhand) a few years ago. I used to work as a daily wager. But when the Covid-19 lockdown came, all work stopped. Even after the lockdown ended, work was hard to come by. I barely had enough to eat in the first few months. I had no choice but to start begging," Vishu Ram, 56, told TOI. "I had lost my dignity and all hope. I would often think of ending my life."
Madan Mohan, 47, had a similar story. "I suddenly lost my shelter and was forced to live under the open skies. I did not want to beg but what choice did I have?" he told TOI.
Vishu and Madan are among the many beggars, between the ages of 30 and 50, who have been engaged as cooks by the police. "With this work, I am leading a respectful life," said Vishu.
In 2017, Uttarakhand had adopted the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Begging Act, 1972 that banned begging. "Generally, when we detain beggars under this Act and then release them, they return and start begging again after a while," IG Sanjay Gunjyal told TOI. And the pandemic had made things worse. "We wanted to change that."
With the Maha Kumbh approaching — it begins on April 1 — police had been arresting beggars at Har-ki-Pauri Ghat in Haridwar, which draws lakhs during the congregation. "We brought them to beggars' homes, where they were counselled," Gunjyal said. There, they learnt that many of them had lost their jobs when Covid-19 hit, started begging and never recovered. "After several sessions of speaking to them and motivating them, some 30 of them came forward to seek work. Eventually, many from that group were picked for the training."
Sixteen beggars, as of now — from Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra — were then signed up for training under a chef from a five-star hotel in Haridwar. After their training, they were engaged as cooks at police stations that are overseeing the Maha Kumbh. They are paid Rs 10,000-12,000 a month. "The money goes straight into their bank accounts, which we opened for them," Gunjyal said. But what happens after the Maha Kumbh ends? Police have a plan. Gunjyal said, "After the congregation is over, we will get them work. We must end this cycle of destitution."

Phil Morle, partner at Main Sequence Ventures, said the firm's investment thesis was that the world needed to make twice as much food as it does now and traditional agricultural practices weren't up to the task.
"When I started my life as an investor I don't think I ever imagined I'd invest in a fat company but actually it's one of the companies I'm most excited about," Mr Morle said. "The alternative protein companies have made enormous leaps in the last few years towards that quality of meat or dairy but they're not there yet."

An international group of scientists from India and Russia has created edible food films for packaging fruits, vegetables, poultry, meat, and seafood. The films consist of natural ingredients, and the research team behind them say they are safe for consumer health and the environment. In a study published in the Journal of Food Engineering, the researchers claim the films are water-soluble and dissolve by almost 90 percent in 24 hours.
"We have created three types of food films based on the well-known naturally occurring seaweed biopolymer sodium alginate," said Rammohan Aluru, senior researcher from the Organic Synthesis laboratory at Ural Federal University and co-author of the paper.
"Its molecules have film-forming properties. Sodium alginate is an auspicious carbohydrate macromolecule that has the potential film-forming properties upon hydrolysis and abundantly existed in cell walls as a mixture of various salts. The greatest advantage of sodium alginate is that it performs as liquid-gel in an aqueous medium."

During these years, Turkey's intelligence agency partnered with the mafia to carry out political assassinations – an arrangement exposed in spectacular fashion in a 1996 car accident which killed an MP, Istanbul's deputy chief of police, and Grey Wolves leader Abdullah Çatlı, all of whom were travelling in the same vehicle.
After decades spent in hiding, prison, or keeping a low profile, players from this era are making a bold re-entry into the public sphere.

Two pointless wars. One financial meltdown. Deindustrialization. Dismantle of traditions and social fabric. Revision of history. Decaying culture. Boundless indebtment and money creation. The out-of-touch elite can do anything without being punished. If this happened in the medieval or early modern era, a lot of heads would already being rotten on the pikes. The US, and the West needs a real crushing disaster, to shock it out of its comfortable dreams, or just as well put it out of its misery. The barbarian tribes are at the gate of Rome. Just wait for a few years. Things will be sorted out.
